India: 6 killed, 50 injured in Goa's Shirgaon stampede, CM Pramod Sawant visits Goa Medical College
Bicholim (Goa): Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the Goa Medical College (GMC), where some injured persons in the Shirgaon stampede are being treated. The incident occurred during the annual Lairai Devi jatra at the Shirgaon temple, resulting in 6 deaths and over 50 injuries.
Pramod Sawant mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called to inquire about the situation and assured central assistance.
Speaking about the incident, Pramod Sawant said, "Six people died in the stampede, and over 50 people have been injured. After getting the information, I went to the spot. The injured are being treated in the hospital...More than 50,000 people participate in the Jatra every year. This is an unfortunate incident. PM Modi called me and enquired about the incident. He also assured to provide assistance from the Centre."
Sawant also informed that an investigation into the incident is underway, led by the SP North and the Collector. The state government has cancelled all official programs for the next three days.
"We are taking care of the treatment of the injured...SP North and the Collector are conducting an investigation of the incident...We are cancelling all Govt programs for the next 3 days in the state...," the Chief Minister said.
Also, Goa's Health Minister, Vishwajit Rane said that the health department has taken measures to ensure proper care and monitoring of the patients, including setting up a dedicated ICU and appointing nodal officers to oversee the situation.
Taking to social media, X, Vishwajit Rane wrote, 'In view of the unfortunate stampede at the Lairai Zatra, we have taken immediate and comprehensive steps to manage the situation. We have coordinated with 108, ensuring that five ambulances were dispatched to the site, with three stationed at Asilo and an additional three kept on standby until the situation stabilises.'
"A total of 30 casualties have been reported. Of these, 8 critical patients, including 2 intubated cases, have been referred to GMC for super-speciality care; 4 (2 male, 2 female) were brought in dead; 8 are admitted at Asilo; 10 are receiving treatment for minor injuries; and two have been discharged. 10 patients are currently serious and under observation in the casualty at GMC. Additional doctors have been roped in, and a dedicated ICU with ventilators has been set up to provide consolidated care. All necessary arrangements have been made, and we are closely monitoring the condition of each patient. GMC and Health services, including 108 has also been instructed to remain on high alert. MS from GMC and Asilo, have been appointed as nodal officers to monitor the situation closely. We will keep you regularly updated," the post further reads.

'I think it's time to start planning for people in my position, to have a crack at it and try and make that spot their own for the for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully, they get enough of a lead-in where they can have success in that role.' 'My decision to retire from one-day international cricket was probably more on the back of the first couple of games in the Champions Trophy,' he said. Maxwell joins Marcus Stoinis and Steve Smith in announcing their retirements from ODIs after his compatriots stepped down on either side of the Champions Trophy. However, Maxwell will remain available for selection in T20s. 'I felt like I gave myself a really good opportunity to be fit and ready for those games. The first game in Lahore, we played on a rock-hard outfield. Post that game I was pretty sore. 'We were lucky enough to have a washout against South Africa, where I had a bit more time to have a bit of rest and get myself ready for the next game. 'I started to (realise) that if I don't have the perfect conditions in 50-over cricket, my body just struggles to get through that. It feels like it's a tiring affair just to get through – and almost surviving – the 50 overs, let alone being at my best throughout that 50 overs, and then going out there and trying to perform with the bat as well. 'I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions,' Maxwell revealed. Maxwell steps away from the format as the batter with the highest strike rate among all ODI players to have recorded at least 2000 runs, holding a stunning 126.70 strike rate in his career. Maxwell's mercurial feats were best exemplified by his jaw-dropping 201 not out against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup battling cramps. 'This was a moment, like Steve Waugh's Ashes ton on the last ball of the day, or Michael Bevan's final four to beat the Windies. One of those events that makes you ask 'Where were you when…',' Maxwell wrote in his 2024 book, The Showman. 'It was crazy to think that I now had one of these, a moment when Australia was all on board.'

Samsung could turn the Galaxy S26 series into Perplexity phones

Now, it sounds like a major AI player could be available out of the box on the Galaxy S26 series. Bloomberg reports that Samsung is close to inking a deal with Perplexity to preload its services and technologies on Galaxy phones, citing sources familiar with the matter. The deal could also see Samsung become one of the AI firm's biggest investors as part of a new round of funding. The outlet claims that Perplexity's assistant and app would be preloaded on Samsung phones, while its search features would be integrated into the Samsung Internet Browser. The companies are also apparently thinking about integrating Perplexity's technology into the Bixby assistant.
