AI used to aid Love Island casting process, ITV boss says

Speaking as ITV announced its half-year results, Dame Carolyn McCall said the broadcaster uses AI in many ways.
'We will use AI in any way we can to make what we do more efficient,' she told members of the media.
'And a great example of that for me from (ITV) Studios is they're using a tool where it's a smart editing assistance and it's about speed and quality.
'And they used it for Love Island and casting this year.
'So that productivity gain means that they can go and do other things, which is really, really good.'
Love Island has been a huge ratings hit for ITV since its launch in 2015, with each series receiving around 100,000 applications from members of the public.
A spokeswoman for ITV later explained that generative AI does not make any decisions during the Love Island casting process, but is used to edit hundreds of hours of footage into highlight reels for members of the team to then watch.
'It simply assists with the editing of audition tapes during the casting period,' she said.
'We get thousands and thousands of applications every year and we hold face to face auditions.
'When we get to the stage of narrowing it down to hundreds of prospective Islanders and we want to share audition highlights on a reel with the ITV commissioning team, to support the casting decision, we use the software (Quickture along with an Adobe editing programme) to edit the hundreds of hours of footage into highlight reels.
'It means that the casting team can then spend more time researching and finding more prospective Islanders.'
Announcing its latest results on Thursday, ITV said it had stepped up cost-cutting plans again following a slump in half-year profits.
The broadcaster said it was slashing costs by another £15 million, on top of £30 million previously announced, with spend on content being trimmed.
The group flagged using technology among efforts to drive the latest round of cost-cutting.

ITV drama to be hit with parent lock and 'trigger warning' over 'satanic' scenes

Inspector Morse is reported to have been handed a "trigger warning" on some episodes on its streaming platform ITVX ITV 's beloved Inspector Morse is set to include a new "trigger warning" on some of its episodes, causing quite a stir among fans online, with some labelling the move as "woke". The popular crime series will reportedly now feature a pre-warning before streaming on ITV's online platform, ITVX. ‌ One episode in question, titled Day of the Devil, will even come with a parental lock due to its potentially distressing content, including "satanic images". ‌ The broadcasting network has reportedly extended its warning to other past episodes, particularly those featuring crime and violence. The show, which aired for an impressive 13 years and spans eight series, remains a hit to this day. ‌ With streaming now popular across all age groups, it's crucial for internet giants to take necessary precautions. The contentious episode follows Inspector Morse, portrayed by John Thaw, and his reliable sidekick detective sergeant Robbie Lewis, played by Kevin Whately, as they track down a devil-worshipping cult involved in a serious rape offence, reports the Express. ‌ One particularly chilling scene depicts a Satanist being burned to death during a black mass. Senior MP Sir Alec Shelbrooke expressed his outrage about the alleged update to The Sun, warning that "Britain would soon be laughed at," for appearing overly sensitive. He declared: "This is another example of soft-touch Britain seeping into everything. We're just going to be laughed at as a country if things like this continue, because nobody's prepared for the real world." ‌ The Mirror has contacted ITV for comment. Previous alerts have formerly broadcast warnings over "programming that contains politically sensitive or distressing themes, content, or language has carried appropriate warnings since our launch". ‌ In more recent developments, Netflix found itself at the heart of controversy over a sequence that reportedly left "many millions of women hot under the collar". A moment from Jane Austen's beloved Pride and Prejudice, featuring Colin Firth as Mr Darcy emerging from lake waters back in 1995, has now been removed. ‌ It's understood the romantic drama's famous sequence was axed to prevent any "objectifying men" accusations being levelled at the streaming giant. According to The Sun, Netflix "did not want a repeat" of Poldark where Aidan Turner's shirtless scene sparked considerable controversy. A source revealed to the publication: "It is also credited for sparking subsequent moments of male objectification on screen - like Aidan Turner's famous topless scything scene in Poldark."

Value Scope: Each way horseracing tips from Steve Jones for Tuesday at Glorious Goodwood

Our man hopes to maintain a fine run of form as he begin the first of five columns on Glorious Goodwood with four recomendations from the ITV card Take a Composer to call the tune in the Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap. DREAM COMPOSER (3.45) has a decent record at Goodwood. ‌ He's only been out of the frame once in seven starts over today's course and distance, with one of those efforts resulting in victory. That win came more than two years ago but he was successful twice last summer, including defeat of subsequent Group 1 scorer American Affair at Pontefract. It's probably unwise to take that form too literally but it does show the sort level he is capable of operating at on his day. ‌ He had excuses for his below-par runs earlier in the season and his second to progressive three-year-old Dan Tucker at Pontefract last month was a big step in the right direction. ‌ The likely strong pace at a course he clearly likes should play to his strengths. Have 2pts each-way at 20-1. A few bookies are paying out on six places. Mark Johnston used to dominate the handicaps at this meeting and his son Charlie has a decent chance in the Ridgeway Fillies' Handicap. His BLESSED STAR (4.55) returns to handicaps after finishing runner-up in four novice starts. Her second behind smart prospect Wujjood at Pontefract last month was a solid comeback run and that effort should help put the edge on her for today's race. Find out more here. This race has been dominated by three-year-olds in recent years and this lightly-weighted filly could well continue that trend. Have 1pt each-way at 12-1. Most firms are offering four places. There looks sure to be a strong pace in the final race on day one and that will suit LADY OF ANDROS (5.30). She was unlucky not to beat Easy Peeler in a decent fillies' handicap at York last month when the race set up for her hold up style of racing. Her third at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago was further proof that she is nicely handicapped and she should take advantage with the prospect of this race dropping perfectly for her. Have 1pt each-way at 11-1. Sky Bet is going five places. ALYANAABI (2.30) is worth chancing in the Group 2 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes. He's got the ability to land a race like this and he will appreciate the return to 7f after struggling to make an impact over 6f at Newcastle last month. Have 1pt each-way at 25-1. A few firms are offering four places.
