After SC directive on Bihar voter roll, EC uploads details of 65 lakh deleted names
The information includes reasons for each deletion, such as death, migration, or duplication.
The apex court, while hearing petitions last week against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, had ordered the Commission to publish the deleted names with reasons to ensure transparency in the process.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, in a statement during the day, defended the SIR exercise, terming it 'a matter of grave concern' that certain parties were spreading 'misinformation' about the deletions.
He underscored that India's electoral system for parliamentary and assembly elections is a 'multi-layered, decentralised construct as envisaged by law.'
Gyanesh Kumar said that details of 65 lakh deleted voters from Bihar's draft electoral rolls have been uploaded on district magistrates' websites in line with a Supreme Court directive. UNI SNG SSP

Bill on establishing a new IIM in Guwahati introduced in Lok Sabha
A bill to include the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati in the schedule of the Indian Institutes of Management Act to make it an institution of national importance was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced the bill amid din created by the opposition over the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. According to the draft law, the central government, the Assam government and representatives of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) signed a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) for all-round development of the state. According to the MoS, a number of developmental projects are to be implemented by the Union government under a Special Development Package (SDP). Establishment of an IIM at Guwahati as an institution of national importance is one of the projects under the SDP. At present, there are 21 IIMs that are declared as institutions of national importance and each of those are specified in the Schedule to the IIM Act. The Assam government has requested for establishment of an IIM in the state, keeping in view the geographical location of the state and its all-round development. 'Assam is one of the very few states with more than three crore population which does not have an IIM,' the bill noted.

EC makes public names of 6.5 mn people deleted from Bihar voter list
The Election Commission (EC) on Monday came out with the names of 65 lakh people who were removed from the draft electoral rolls published as part of the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise, officials said. The development came in the backdrop of the Supreme Court's direction that details of the deleted names be made public by August 19 and a compliance report be filed by August 22. The EC is publishing the names of 'ASD' (Absentee, Shifted, and Dead) voters across polling booths, and is likely to do so online as has been directed by the apex court, they said. According to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Bihar, ASD lists have been displayed at polling booths in Rohtas, Begusarai, Arwal and other places.
