Man Utd cruise to easy win over Bournemouth in Premier League US friendly

Al Jazeera31-07-2025
Manchester United made it two wins out of two with a 4-1 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League Summer Series preseason tournament in Chicago.
Goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo and teenager Ethan Williams sealed an encouraging result for Ruben Amorim's side at a rainy, windswept Soldier Field on Wednesday night.
United, who had opened their tour with a 2-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday, were always in control against the Cherries, taking the lead after just eight minutes through Hojlund.
Dorgu curled in an inviting cross from the left flank and Denmark international teammate Hojlund timed his run and jump to perfection to glance a header past Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
Dorgu then doubled United's lead in the 25th minute, latching on to a clever, lofted quick free kick from Mason Mount, muscling his way into the area and sliding a cool finish beneath the advancing Petrovic.
Diallo bundled in United's third in the 53rd minute before Amorim made nine changes with 20 minutes to go.
Substitute Williams needed just two minutes to make an impact curling a low finish into the bottom corner to put United 4-0 up.
The only blemish on United's performance came with an 88th-minute own goal from Matthijs de Ligt.
West Ham top Everton
In Wednesday's other Premier League friendly in Chicago, West Ham came from behind to beat former manager David Moyes's Everton 2-1.
Idrissa Gueye put Everton 1-0 up after 17 minutes before West Ham recovered to equalise through Brazilian international Lucas Paqueta just before half-time. Germany international Niclas Fullkrug's 64th-minute strike sealed the Hammers' win.
The result was another disappointing preseason setback for Everton, who were soundly beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth on Saturday.
'I'm not overly concerned because I don't have the players which I need and what I want,' Everton boss Moyes said afterwards.
'We knew before we came (to the US) we were going to be really up against it. So, it was never going to be us coming here and winning.
'At the moment, we're not ready to perform well enough in this tournament, and we're not ready to start the Premier League season.'
The four-team competition concludes in Atlanta on Sunday, with United facing Everton and West Ham taking on Bournemouth.

Al Hilal sign Darwin Nunez from Liverpool

The Saudi Arabian soccer league has secured its latest marquee signing after Darwin Nunez completed the move from Liverpool to Al Hilal on Saturday. The Uruguay international cost a reported 46.3 million pounds ($62m) and has signed a three-year contract. Al Hilal, Saudi Arabia's most successful team, has been searching for another star signing after releasing Brazil great Neymar in January. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes rejected a move before the Club World Cup in June, and there was also reported interest in former Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Nunez leaves Liverpool after a mixed time in the Premier League, where he produced some spectacular moments but could not establish himself as the Merseyside club's first-choice centre forward. He scored 40 goals in 143 games and won the Premier League title last season. But he made only one league start from the turn of the year and scored just seven goals in 47 total appearances last term. In a summer when Liverpool has reinforced its attack with the signings of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, along with interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Nunez's position had been in doubt. He follows a slew of players who have left Europe's top leagues for Saudi Arabia since Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Al Nassr in 2022. Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane and Riyad Mahrez are some of the high-profile names to make the switch as Saudi Arabia has mounted an ambitious recruitment drive to establish itself as a major player in global soccer. Al Hilal, which produced one of the biggest upsets at the Club World Cup by eliminating Manchester City, already has a host of marquee players, including Kalidou Koulibaly, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Joao Cancelo and Aleksandar Mitrovic. It is also coached by two-time Champions League runner-up Simone Inzaghi. It has won a record 19 Saudi league titles as well as four Asian championships, but was beaten to the title by Al-Ittihad last season.

Man United welcome Sesko and pay tribute to De Gea before friendly

PA Media/dpa London Manchester United celebrated the arrival of Benjamin Sesko and career of returning David De Gea before Ruben Amorim's side ended an unbeaten pre-season with a 1-1 draw and shoot-out win against Fiorentina. Saturday's final friendly before the Premier League campaign gets under way gave fans the chance to show appreciation to a club great and welcome someone hoping to become a star for the Red Devils. Sesko's arrival from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £73.7million was announced on Saturday morning and little more than two hours later he was greeted by a huge roar when introduced at Old Trafford. The new United striker posed for a photo with fellow summer signings Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon and Bryan Mbeumo, before attention turned to the man seventh in the club's all-time appearance list. De Gea played 545 times for United and his name echoed around Old Trafford after captain Bruno Fernandes led a presentation as the Fiorentina goalkeeper made his first visit since leaving in 2023. There were 65,103 in attendance for the final match before the Premier League opener at home to Arsenal next Sunday, when Amorim will be hoping they make a stronger start than they did against the Serie A side. United were caught napping in the eighth minute when a corner was floated in from the right for Simon Sohm to slam home in front of the Stretford End. Harry Maguire nodded wide as the hosts sought a leveller that arrived in the 25th minute when Robin Gosens directed Fernandes' inswinging corner into his own net under pressure from Casemiro and Leny Yoro. De Gea's reactions prevented the latter heading home a cross from Mbeumo as United pushed to take the lead before half-time. Ayden Heaven blocked an effort from Sohm early in the second half, while Cunha came close to marking his first Old Trafford appearance in a United shirt with a goal as he whizzed just wide from distance. Maguire saw a long-range effort saved as the clock wound down and changes slowed down the game, with the highlight being De Gea leaving to a standing ovation as he was replaced before a penalty shootout. The first eight penalties were converted before Altay Bayindir saved Fabiano Parisi's spot-kick, with Kobbie Mainoo slamming home to secure a 5-4 triumph and the Snapdragon Cup.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri won't be fully fit until September: Guardiola

PA Media/dpa London Manchester City midfielder Rodri has suffered an injury setback which will not see him return to full fitness until after September's international break. The Spain international was absent for the majority of last season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament but, after returning late in the campaign, he is believed to have sustained a groin problem during City's Club World Cup exit to Al Hilal last month. 'Rodri's getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al Hilal and for the last five or six weeks,' said manager Pep Guardiola. 'He's training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really, really fit. 'Hopefully, in the games (prior to that) he can play some minutes but the important thing is to not have pain because we don't want him to be come back and injured, come back and injured. 'We will try desperately to avoid that but he's training the last two or three days with us and that's good.' Rodri, Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic - who had surgery on an Achilles injury in the summer - were all left out of City's travelling squad for the Anglo Palermitan Trophy game against Palermo in Sicily. Asked if they would be available for next weekend's Premier League opener at Wolves, Guardiola added: 'Ninety minutes for Rodri I don't think so. 'Phil, hopefully, it depends on the problem but it's a long week so hopefully but Kova (is) injured until September or October. Hopefully (he will be back) earlier.'
