Gundu Rao talks about the state's action against food adulteration, use of harmful chemical additives and need for local level food testing. He explains the government's recent ban on dangerous food colours like Rhodamine-B. Tartrazine, Carmoisine, and Sunset Yellow that are found in items like cotton candy, kebabs, gobi manchurian and even cakes—chemicals which have become common in street and processed foods. He also talks about the state's initiative to set up free food testing stalls across malls in Karnataka where ordinary consumers can bring in their food samples and test them for quality and adulteration.
The Minister also spoke about substandard tea powders in Karnataka—many of which failed quality tests in recent sample tests. The government's quick action in issuing alerts and taking enforcement measures shows its seriousness in protecting consumers from low grade and unsafe products.
Anaemia is another critical issue that the state is fighting with and speaking about it Gundu Rao spoke about the state-led screening programs being rolled out in schools and rural areas to not only identify health concerns but also educate families about nutritional balance and diet. He also gives small but powerful examples—like using clean cotton cloth instead of plastic sheets in idli preparation—as everyday examples of safer and healthier choices.

The Chamarajanagar district administration, in collaboration with the Departments of Women and Child Development, and Health and Family Welfare, and the Mysuru-based All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), has launched the Programme for Assessment of Young Children for Auditory and Speech-Language Skills (PrAYAAS) in the Karnataka district on Friday. Minister in charge of the district K. Venkatesh, who is also the Animal Husbandry and Sericulture Minister, launched the initiative at an anganwadi in ward no. 10 of Karinanjanapura Layout. The initiative focuses on speech (vocal) and hearing tests for anganwadi children. After launching the programme and wishing success to the scheme, Mr. Venkatesh reviewed the screening process that began for the children. Appreciating the initiative, MLA for Chamarajanagar C. Puttarangashetty said that the programme is being implemented for the first time in the State by the Chamarajanagar district administration, and described it as a progressive step for supporting the learning processes of children. Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag said that parents often notice their child's inability to hear or speak clearly only at a later stage, and poor families in rural areas may not be able to afford treatment. Therefore, the district administration partnered with AIISH Mysuru to provide free medical services for all children aged between six months and six years, she added. The programme identifies and treats speech and hearing problems among anganwadi children at an early stage and also trains anganwadi workers to recognise early symptoms of speech and hearing impairment. It also aims to develop a comprehensive plan of action to provide screening and treatment facilities at the district hospital for affected persons. The district has 440 anganwadis with about 37,800 children. Of these, the target for the current year is to screen 35,326 children. The programme has been launched symbolically, and training for anganwadi workers by master trainers will be conducted next month. The scheme will then be rolled out across all anganwadis in the district, the Deputy Commissioner informed. According to AIISH, research indicates that about 14% of children are at a risk of having speech, language, or hearing difficulties, which, if left unaddressed, can hinder their overall development. In view of this, PrAYAAS aims to identify all such children aged 6 months to 6 years across the district and provide timely interventions. Screening will be carried out by experienced speech-language pathologists and audiologists from AIISH and ENT surgeons from the District Hospital. Conditions such as speech delays, mispronunciations, stammering, voice disorders, lack of social interaction, hearing loss, and ear infections will be assessed, a press release from AIISH said. The initiative, scheduled to run until March 31, 2026, will be implemented in five phases.

BENGALURU: Deaths linked to cardiac arrests recorded under Karnataka's Dr Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti Yojana have almost tripled, surging from 229 in 2023–24 to 608 in 2024–25, according to the state health department data. The number of critical ECG screenings also nearly tripled in the same period — from 2,489 to 6,767. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao shared the figures as an answer during the ongoing monsoon Legislative Council session. The department does not have a total number of heart attacks reported in the state or related deaths outside Dr Puneeth Rajkumar scheme, because heart attacks, so far, were not considered as a 'notifiable' disease. It was only this year during July that the Health Minister announced that cardiac attack related deaths outside hospitals will be declared as 'notifiable'. The minister had announced this after a surge was reported in heart attack cases in the state and a committee was formed to look into sudden cardiovascular events among individuals under 45 years of age. However, a government order regarding the same is not yet issued. Health department officials said that over 75% of the heart attack cases reported involved individuals with more than one cardiac risk factor and that the most contributing factors include obesity, heavy alcohol intake, smoking and high blood pressure. To reduce the risk of sudden heart-related deaths, health department officials said that they are considering expanding CPR training for specific groups such as physical trainers in gyms apart from school and college students and teachers. Additionally, efforts are on to ensure that gyms, malls, and other crowded places are equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to ensure immediate response during cardiac arrests. What is the scheme? The state government launched the Dr Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti Yojana in October 2023 to provide emergency cardiac care to patients suffering from heart attacks or sudden cardiac issues within the golden hour. The model uses a 'hub-and-spoke' approach - Hubs are established at 16 super-specialty hospitals like Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Kalaburagi. These hubs are connected to 85 spoke centers, encompassing district and taluk hospitals where patients first present. After initial treatment at a spoke, patients requiring advanced care are referred to a hub for specialized interventions. The scheme delivers tenecteplase injections - a clot-busting medication that costs up to Rs 45,000, at free of cost.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling said enlivening others in the aftermath of one's death through organ donation is a higher order of noble act. He said this while addressing an event organised here on the occasion of World Organ Donation Day. Paying homage to the souls of the organ donors and their family members, the minister said, 'Because of your noble acts, Odisha has been honoured at the national level as an emerging State in organ donation. Your donations have not only saved the lives of others but also have brought honours to our motherland Odisha.' Welcoming the immediate family members of the organ donors, Health and Family Welfare Secretary Aswathy S said words fail to describe the humanitarian acts and courage of the organ donors and their family members. One organ donor could save the lives of eight people in critical stages of their lives. Even one organ donor through tissue donation could provide relief to around 50 people, she said. Awasthy expressed her gratitude to the families of the donors on behalf of the people of Odisha. To mark the occasion, Mahaling, on behalf of the government of Odisha, conferred the Suraj Award on 24 organ donors, which were posthumously received by their immediate family members. The award was associated with a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to each family. The immediate family members of the organ donors were also honoured by the respective collectors of their districts after the token distribution of the awards by the minister here. The State government instituted the Suraj Award in 2020 for the organ donors after Suraj Behera from Ganjam district sustained critical injuries in a road accident and was declared brain dead by doctors, following which his relatives decided to donate his organs. Their decision helped save the lives of six people. Commemorating their inspiring humanitarian act, the Suraj Award is being presented to organ donors and organisations promoting organ donation in Odisha every year on August 13 on the occasion of World Organ Donation Day since 2020.
