Terrifying Things I Learned This Week

Hello, and welcome to That Got Dark! I'm Crystal, and there's nothing I love more than searching the darkest depths of the internet for creepy stories…except for maybe a good slice of pizza. But, much like entering a haunted house, I don't like doing it alone! So, every week, I'll gather the darkest and creepiest things I find on the internet (and beyond) to share just with you, my spooky-loving friend. So, tuck yourself in tight and get out that flashlight…it's about to get dark. As if we didn't need any more reason to be scared of going into a surgery, I recently found out that in 2004, three transplant recipients actually died after receiving organs from a donor who had been unknowingly infected with rabies. According to Mitch Cohen, an infectious disease expert at the CDC, this had never happened before. Weeks after each of their surgeries, the recipients began to show symptoms of the virus. Then, lab tests confirmed the organ donor had been infected by a bat. Apparently, rabies tests aren't a routine donor screening due to the narrow window doctors have between a patient being declared brain-dead and the transplantation, as organs need to maintain viability. So, yeah, new fear unlocked. Occasionally, I like to ask the BuzzFeed Community to tell me about the most mysterious, cult-like, bad-vibes towns in the United States they've ever been to. And you'd be shocked at how many responses I get each time (or maybe not). This week's spotlight: Glenrio, New Mexico and Texas. 'This is a ghost town on the border of the two states along Route 66. I felt like I was being watched the whole time. There are still several houses there that I'm not entirely sure are unoccupied. I normally don't have 'raised hair on the back of your neck' moments. But I couldn't even get up the courage to get out of my car to take some photos of the derelict buildings left. It was very creepy." Wikipedia is like the Wild West. It's vast, lawless, and sometimes you can find some extremely weird (and horrifying) things out there. This week's spotlight: the horrifying story of Mary Toft. If you've never heard of the story of Mary Toft, take a seat, because this one is a doozy. So, Mary Toft was a woman in 18th-century England who scammed people, including doctors, into believing that she had given birth to rabbits. She would accomplish this by putting small dead rabbits and/or their body parts up inside her vagina in secret and then "birthing" them later. And, yes, it was as painful and dangerous as it sounds. Apparently, the rabbits were often delivered with their sharp nails intact. This routine was so dangerous that historians today are shocked that Toft didn't die from a bacterial infection. It's unclear what Toft's motivation was for doing this, but historians think she wasn't primarily responsible and that she was likely the 'lead role' in an idea concocted by other people. Cory Monteith — Died: July 13, 2013. Cause of Death: Accidental overdose of heroin and alcohol. How he died: Best known for his role as Finn Hudson on Glee, Cory Monteith was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver, Canada. Monteith had recently completed rehab in April 2013, and experts believe this period of abstinence significantly lowered his heroin tolerance. His death was ruled an accidental overdose, the result of a mixed drug toxicity involving intravenous heroin combined with alcohol. Sinners (2025) What it's about: Set in 1932 Mississippi, twin brothers (both played by Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to open a juke joint, but find themselves battling supernatural forces, racial tensions, and their you should watch it: Directed by Ryan Coogler, who basically has a perfect track record with films like Fruitvale Station and Black Panther under his belt, this is a horror film so good it's ripe for awards you can watch it: Streaming for free on HBO Max Oscar Ray Bolin Oscar Ray Bolin was an American serial killer convicted of brutally murdering multiple women in Florida during the 1980s. He was arrested in 1990 after his ex-wife's husband tipped off authorities and was executed by lethal injection in 2016 after a lengthy trial and decades of appeals. His last meal: A medium-rare rib-eye steak, baked potato with butter and sour cream, salad with iceberg lettuce, cucumber, and tomato, baked garlic bread, lemon meringue pie, and a bottle of Coca-Cola. Well, I think that's about all the terrifying and messed-up info my brain can handle for the week. In the next issue, we'll get into the story of a man who was swallowed alive by a sinkhole 🙃, the nightmarish murder of Junko Furuta, and plenty of other things to keep you up at night. I've Been A Disney World And Universal Studios Annual Passholder For 10 Years: Here Are The 25 Products That'll Help You Survive A Theme Park Vacation
Hey guys! I'm Samar Hadri, a BuzzFeed shopping writer and Orlando, Florida native 🍊. I've been a Disney World *and* Universal Studios Annual Passholder for well over a decade (I may or may not have even gotten married at Disney 😅), so yeah, I'm something of a theme park expert. These are the products that I've tried and can recommend firsthand to make sure your amusement park experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible. With these products, you can feel prepared for almost any situation that pops up during a full day of trudging through the parks. First things first, a mid-size sling backpack to carry all of your essentials, while being small enough to fit in the pouch of whichever rides you love the most. With several compartments inside the bag, as well as a front pouch on the strap, you can keep everything incredibly organized to cut down on the time it takes for you to dig for your phone for spontaneous photos or sunscreen for your two-hour reapplications. Plus, it even has mesh pockets for your water bottle and umbrella! A reusable rain poncho for the buckets of water that can suddenly, without warning, drop from the Florida skies. With a long body piece and a big hooded cap, this poncho will keep you dry head to toe. It also comes with a matching carrying case so you don't have to worry about lugging a drenched poncho around the park after your excursion down a "waterfall" at Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom. A four-pack of cooling towels because that Florida sun can be brutal. Just soak it in some cold water at any sink/water fountain, wring it, and place it on your neck for some much-needed relief! No need to let the humidity ruin your day, this FAN-tastic device will ensure your vacation remains as cool as can be. (Plus: the fan also works as a backup portable charger!) And a stroller fan so that your little one stays cool in the heat as well!
