Manchester City close to agreement to sign Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg

Manchester City are close to reaching an agreement to sign Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan.
The 18-year-old has been pursued by a host of clubs but is now on course to join City.
Subject to personal terms being finalised, it will be a record fee for a player from the Norwegian league.
Nypan is expected to go out on a season-long loan to continue his development.

City were not among his suitors in January, when a number of other teams from around Europe pursued the Norway youth international.
He was wanted by Arsenal, Aston Villa and Girona — also part of the City Football Group (CFG) umbrella — but they became resigned to losing out.
Arsenal hosted Nypan but could not persuade the teenager and he chose to stay until the summer. Villa went to Norway to present their vision, only for a deal to elude them. City then entered the race, convincing Nypan and his family on a switch to the Etihad Stadium.
Nypan has already played 70 senior games for Rosenborg, who sit third in the 2025 Eliteserien after 11 games, and is a Norway Under-21 international.

Nypan jumps off the page. After Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard and Antonio Nusa, Norway has another mighty prospect.
Nypan grew up in Trondheim, playing academy football locally for Nardo FK, before joining Rosenborg in 2022. They are the town's biggest club and, historically, the most successful side in Norwegian football.
Nypan was training with their first team at 14. He was a Norwegian under-21 international a year later.
He may not have been young enough to displace Odegaard as the youngest player in Eliteserien history — the Arsenal captain was 15 years and 118 days when he made his first appearance for Stromsgodset in 2014 — but his progress is no less remarkable. Eight goals for Rosenborg during the 2024 season and a team-leading six assists helped him quickly capture the national interest.
Direct comparisons with Odegaard are tempting and not unreasonable, but Nypan is a more all-round midfielder. He can pass, carry, create and score goals, too, but tends to occupy more areas of the pitch.
Nypan is more of a No 8, less of a No 10, and plays with fewer flourishes.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst close to joining Arne Slot's Liverpool coaching staff

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is close to joining Liverpool's backroom team. The 50-year-old is the leading candidate to replace John Heitinga, who left Liverpool this summer to return to Ajax as head coach. Sporting director, Richard Hughes, and head coach Arne Slot have been keen to find a replacement ahead of the pre-season period and Van Bronckhorst, who has managed at Feyenoord, Rangers, and Besiktas fits the bill. Advertisement Although a deal has not yet been done, Van Bronckhorst is now in talks with Liverpool about forming part of a backroom team alongside Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs. The former Netherlands international, who played for Arsenal between 2001 and 2004, is keen on a return to the Premier League, and has recently turned down offers to be a head coach elsewhere. Van Bronckhorst has never worked with Slot and doesn't have a close relationship with him, although the pair share similar ideas around playing style and have already discussed plans for next season. If a deal is completed, Van Bronckhorst would arrive at the club with a wealth of coaching experience. After retiring in 2010, the former midfielder began his coaching career in Feyenoord's youth setup before spending four years as the club's first team manager. He then had a short spell coaching in China before spending a year in charge of Rangers. Following his dissmissal as Rangers manager in November 2022, he was also sacked from his position as Besiktas manager after five months in charge in December 2024. He has been working as a UEFA analyst since the start of 2025.

De Bruyne's Italian job: Man City star signs for Napoli

Two-time Premier League player of the season Kevin De Bruyne has signed as a free agent with Serie A champions Napoli. "KING KEV IS HERE," Napoli declared in a series of posts on X on Thursday. The 33-year-old De Bruyne's contract at Manchester City has expired but Napoli did not announce the length of his new contract. KING KEV IS HERE 👑 💙 #ProudToBeNapoli | #ForzaNapoliSempre | #WelcomeKevin — Official SSC Napoli (@sscnapoli) June 12, 2025 Around 150 fans welcomed De Bruyne on his arrival at a clinic in Rome for his medical. They chanted his name before also singing about Napoli being champions after the player had gone into the facility. At the Italian giants, De Bruyne will reunite with Belgium teammate Romelu Lukaku and follow in the footsteps of former Napoli great Dries Mertens, an ex-Belgium international. In Napoli's midfield, De Bruyne can team up with Serie A player of the year Scott McTominay, who made a highly successful move from City's neighbours and rivals, Manchester United. Known as one of soccer's most complete midfielders, De Bruyne was named the best player in the Premier League for the 2019-2020 and 2021-22 seasons and is generally considered one of the finest players of the EPL era. In 10 seasons at City, he helped City to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League trophy. The addition of De Bruyne may have been one of the reasons that convinced Napoli coach Antonio Conte to stay on for another season after he had considered rejoining Juventus.
