Wexford swimmer Luca Power plays his part in Ireland's record-breaking performance

An exciting men's 4 x 200m freestyle relay, consisting of John Shortt, Denis O'Brien, Power, and Seán Donnellan, combined for a new Irish Junior record of 7:33.36.
The quartet broke the 2018 record of 7:33.73 set at the European Junior Championships and held by Robbie Powell, Cadan McCarthy, Finn McGeever and Jack McMillan. Both McGeever and McMillan went on to represent Ireland at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games in that same event.
Luca flew the Wexford flag proudly in Slovakia, with his first race taking place on Tuesday morning, when he touched in 1:54.12 in the 200m freestyle.
National Centre Limerick's Denis O'Brien was the fastest of the Irish swimmers in a personal best of 1:51.80, while Power's time was better than the other competitor from Ireland, Dolphin's Tadgh O'Brien (1:57.45).
Luca's last race was in the 400m freestyle heats on Sunday, when he clocked 4:09.43.
'That was tough, the first few races were tough, it's my first time racing outdoors and racing at an international level,' he said.
'The relay was great, I made personal best in my split yesterday, I was happy with that.'
Meanwhile, excitement is building as the 2025 Irish Summer National Age Group Championships draw near.
Set to take place from July 10–13 in Limerick, this prestigious event will bring together the best young swimmers from across the country to compete at the highest level.
Among the talented athletes representing the New Ross club are four exceptional junior swimmers: Seán Moran, Emersyn Scully, Katie Ryan and Paula Gallardo.
These young swimmers have demonstrated remarkable dedication, skill and determination in their journey to qualify, and now they're set to take on the national stage.
Each of them has emerged as a rising star within the club, showing promise and consistency through a season of hard training and competition.
They won't be the only names to watch, however. Other strong contenders from the club are hot on their heels, showing that the future is bright for our swim programme with a new generation of talent ready to make their mark.
We wish Seán, Emersyn, Katie and Paula the very best of luck as they head to Limerick to represent the club. No matter the outcome, their hard work and achievements already speak volumes – and the experience will surely fuel even greater success ahead.

Townend impressed as La Note Verte makes all at Roscommon

Winner of a bumper and maiden hurdle in Listowel, separated by 12 months, the Willie Mullins-trained La Note Verte impressed when making all to land the Supervalu Co. Roscommon Ladies Day Novice Hurdle in Roscommon. Paul Townend's only ride of the evening, the five-year-old Australia mare, owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, bowled along in front from flagfall. Her jumping was slick and she had her nearest pursuers in trouble before reaching the third last flight, ultimately coasting home 12 lengths clear of Fairbanks. 'She felt green and inexperienced in Listowel but she has improved a lot since then,' commented Townend. 'This represented a huge step forward by her. She loves jumping and the nice ground helps. She should hold her own in better company.' Earlier, 7lb claimer Anna McGuinness enhanced her fine strike-rate for Mullins when guiding the JP McManus-owned even-money favourite Vicar Street to a comprehensive victory over Cooladdi in the Adare Manor Opportunity Maiden Hurdle. The regally bred six-year-old (Galileo-Vroum Vroum Mag), off the track since disappointing in a Galway festival bumper last year, powered clear on the run-in to score by 11 lengths, prompting his owner's representative Frank Berry to state: 'He jumped great and did it well. He handled the ground well and Anna gave him a lovely ride. 'You couldn't ask him to do any more and he seemed to appreciate the trip. You'd have to like the way he got to the line. We'll look for a novice for him, maybe Galway.' Backed into 7-1, the Liz Doyle-trained Ryan's Son took the first division of the Frenchpark Maiden Hurdle, sweeping past We're Back Again in a race which saw narrow leader Bhean Saibhre blunder and unseat Peter Smithers, when in the lead, at the second last, hampering favourite and ultimate fourth Ned In The Park. 'He pulled too hard in a good bumper in Punchestown and we came here hoping to teach him,' explained Doyle. 'He does everything the wrong way around and Sean said he's still very green. We might look for a 'rated novice' for him somewhere.' The finish of the second division concerned on the market-leaders as Donagh Meyler brought Noel Meade's Young Churchill (6-5 favourite) with a strong late surge to deny long-time leader Astelia by a half-length, with a 21-length gap back to the third. Meade explained: 'We wanted a good gallop, so the walk didn't suit us. Donagh came wide for the better ground and it paid off. I was hoping he'd win his maiden hurdle, with the 8lb allowance, and he'll go back to the Flat now.' Meyler went on to complete a double when the Jessica Harrington-trained Jerrari (4-1 favourite) opened his account, at the ninth attempt, in the REMAX Team Early Handicap Hurdle, staying on powerfully to see off Pampar Lady. Wexford rider Eoin Staples savoured his first success since turning conditional when Gavin Cromwell's Ahead Of The Posse proved best in the Knockcrogghery Claiming Hurdle. And Small Town Hero, formerly trained by Christian Williams in Wales, made a successful Irish debut for Ian Donoghue when making all under Conor Stone-Walsh to take the three-mile Roscommon Heral Handicap Hurdle in gutsy style.

Brendan Rodgers: 'I played Gaelic and hurling – I wasn't so good at the hurling'

It didn't take long for Brendan Rodgers to be engulfed by 'Corkness'. Just a couple of hours after landing in Cork, the Celtic manager was in Cork City Hall amongst some members of the Cork public, the Cork Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy and Cork City manager Ger Nash on the eve of the Cork Super Cup. The match itself, which has sold over 30,000 tickets so far, will also be played at Páirc Uí Chaoimh – the home of Cork GAA – providing Rodgers with the perfect way in which to charm the locals in attendance. 'We were training on Saturday, and I was at a wedding in the evening, I met some Dublin guys who weren't so happy. They filled me in on how they took a bit of a beating in the game,' smiled Rodgers on his first ever visit to the Rebel County, referring to Cork's 20-point demolition of the Dubs at Croke Park. 'I've always followed the hurling, it's a great occasion in a few weeks' time, it will be a great match against your neighbours. 'I played Gaelic and hurling – I wasn't so good at the hurling – but I obviously know the backdrop to the stadium, the history and the heritage of it so it's going to be a great honour for us to be there and bring Celtic to play there is special.' Back to football (or soccer) matters though and Rodgers insisted that this friendly against City forms another key step on their way to building towards the upcoming season. Irish fans may get the chance to see Adam Idah, Liam Scales and Johnny Kenny in action although the Hoops boss admitted his international players that only returned to training last Friday are likely to be given a week before being thrown back into action, ruling Kieran Tierney out of featuring on Leeside. 'Kieran won't be involved,' confirmed Rodgers, who also insisted he has yet to decide if Kenny will again be sent out on loan. 'I've been really pleased for Johnny since I've seen him in January, that was close up. I think he has improved, I think he has developed. 'I spoke to Johnny – funny enough – this morning, just talking about his plan. We would really like him to sign another deal at Celtic and then we will decide what's going to be the best way to develop him, whether it's to stay or whether we think he needs another step to go out. 'He's got a lot of strengths and a lot of qualities; he's done very well since he came back in January. 'This an important part of our preparation, for sure. We're very much in our preparation phase, we've only been back a week, we played our first game on Friday (a 1-0 win away at Queen's Park). 'The one thing I always know with this type of club, and it was similar with Liverpool, there's no pre-season friendlies. 'When you're a big club, I always say it's a test, so this is another test of us. The Cork guys will be super fit because they are well into their season but that's good for us because it means we will have to work very hard in the game. 'We expect a great atmosphere; it's a real privilege for us to play in this stadium and we look forward to playing how we play which is always an attacking brand of football.' As for City, Nash admits he was disappointed to lose striker Djenairo Daniels, who signed a two-year deal with Kilmarnock on Monday after the two clubs reached an 'undisclosed agreement.' The 23-year-old joined the Rebel Army on a short-term deal back in April and scored five goals in 12 Premier Division appearances for the club. City had been hoping to keep hold of Daniels, who had impressed since coming in to replace the injured Ruairí Keating, until the end of the season as they look to avoid relegation, but he has instead opted to join the Scottish Premier League side. 'We wanted to keep DD, I think he did really well when he was here with us,' said Nash. 'Of course, we are disappointed to lose him, but we can't dwell on that, we have to move on. 'We have huge games and the reason you have a squad is to give opportunities to people. 'We need to focus on us. Good luck to DD, when he was with us, he did great. The downside to all of these signings when they are window to window is that the possibility of players leaving is always high. 'It's probably why I have gone down the route of trying to sign Irish players, players who can be here and want to be here for a long time. 'We will be looking to strengthen the squad, definitely.'
