Disturbing horror movie that left fans 'too scared to sleep' now streaming
Jordan Peele's second movie after Get Out, Us saw him dubbed the 'modern day Hitchcock' in breathless first reactions thanks to the film's blend of big ideas, terrifying scares and exhilarating performances.
Starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Elisabeth Moss, Us follows the Wilson family as they return to the beachfront home where Adelaide (Nyong'o) grew up as a child for a holiday.
But Adelaide is haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, and her nightmarish worst fears over something bad happening soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend up on the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival.
In a creepy twist, these masked individuals turn out to be twisted, violent versions of themselves, making the Wilsons – quite literally – their own worst enemies.
Us was added to BBC iPlayer again this week for a limited time only, having first been available to watch there last year, where it sits among other iconic horror movies like The Omen and Halloween.
It is currently available to watch for the next 28 days, if you're a horror fan who's already already on top of big recent horror cinema releases like Together and Weapons.
The flick boasts a very impressive 93% rating on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes from 552 individual critic reactions since its release in 2019; that it has sustained such a high score with such a large volume of reviews also confirms an overwhelmingly positive consensus.
'Jordan Peele's Us is one of the most original horror titles in recent years. This movie is destined for greatness,' declared Jordan Barkan for Dread Central at the time, while Empire magazine called it 'a stunning sophomore effort from Jordan Peele'.
'The showpiece scares in Us are the opposite of ordinary horror jolts: its big shocks dawn slow, and they don't recede,' wrote Robbie Colin in his five-star review for The Telegraph, calling it 'a sinister masterclass in spiralling terror'.
'It's a film that confirms Peele as that rarest of things – a true auteur,' said Dan Stubbs for NME, while Jamie East called it 'the first conscientious horror' in his five-star review for The Sun.
For Metro, Rishma Dosani described Us as 'a film that will stay with you for days'.
'What Peele manages to do so well is leave you breathless with sheer terror one second, and unable to stifle a laugh the next,' she added in her four-star review.
Fans were equally enthusiastic, with Caitlin Stewart admitting in her five-star Google review: 'This was the first film I've watched that made me genuinely scared too sleep at night, I was paranoid for days.'
Comparing it to other famously terrifying horror movies like The Conjuring, Hereditary and The Shining that she'd seen in recent days too, she added that 'Us is the only one that genuinely terrified me'. More Trending

The Christopher Nolan film Tenet is streaming now on BBC iPlayer. The 2020 action film aired on BBC One last week, meaning that it is also available on the streaming service for a limited time. The most cerebral of Interstellar and Oppenheimer director Nolan's films, it has garnered a reputation for its uncompromising storytelling and near impenetrable lore. With the film now available for free on iPlayer, viewers can see for themselves. Tenet currently has a 70% 'fresh' rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers praising its complex narrative and bold ideas. Nola Ojumu described it as a 'mind-bending wonder' and 'fast-paced action thriller,' while praising the performances of Washington and co-stars Robert Pattinson, Sir Kenneth Branagh, and Elizabeth Debicki. Meanwhile, USA Today called it 'utterly dazzling and increasingly bewildering,' as The Independent described it as 'a thrilling place to get lost in.' 'The real joy of the film, nonetheless, is the sheer spectacle,' wrote The Times. Tenet's blend of sci-fi smarts and spy action resonated with viewers too, who have contributed to its 76% Popcornmeter score on the website. However, with its often confusing storytelling and refusal to keep things linear, Tenet is the most divisive of Nolan's films to date. In addition to the confusing story, some detractors have bashed the film for its 'migrane-inducing' sound-mixing, making its dialogue inaudible behind layers of metallic screeching, seat-shaking explosions and relentless gunfire. It's a complaint often levelled at Nolan's films – especially his recent works, such as Dunkirk and Interstellar – and out in full force here. One fan who suggested the film commented on the subreddit thread: "Rarely have any recent horror flicks got me under the skin, but yo, this one did." It comes from the Philippou brothers who have more recently released Back to Her in cinemas. One fan said of the film: "Talk to Me isn't just a movie; it's an otherworldly journey that immerses you in a realm of unrelenting terror and profound introspection. A chilling masterpiece directed by the visionary Philippou brothers, this film reignites the horror genre with a searing intensity reminiscent of its illustrious predecessors." Talk To Me is streaming on Netflix. His House Released in 2020, His House has quickly become a firm favourite amongst devoted horror enthusiasts. It even secured a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie centres on a refugee couple who make a terrifying escape from war-ravaged South Sudan, only to find themselves battling to adapt to their new existence in an English town harbouring sinister forces beneath its façade. The Reddit user who championed the title wrote: "His House on Netflix was terrifying (I had to cover my eyes and plug my ears multiple times) and also a very thought provoking movie. Very well done." While a fan review shared online claims: "His House is an absolute masterpiece that delves deep into the harrowing journey of migrants seeking refuge in a new country. From the moment the film begins, viewers are immersed in the struggles and challenges faced by the protagonists as they flee their war-torn homeland in search of a better life." His House is streaming on Netflix. Veronica The third most popular suggestion via Reddit was Veronica. Whilst it may boast the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of the three choices, it still maintains an impressive 86%. A Spanish film, set in 1991, during a solar eclipse, a teenage girl and her mates attempt to contact the spirit of the girl's father using an Ouija board. Yet during the séance she loses consciousness and soon it becomes apparent that sinister demons have materialised. It draws inspiration from true events which involve the mysterious death of a young girl who performed a similar ritual at school in Madrid in the 1990s. Nevertheless the director Pedro Plaza did not seek to recreate the real events with the film. This is a choice that abandons jump scares and instead seeks to leave you feeling unsettled. As one fan explains: "Really, one of the best horror movies I ever saw. Veronica may not have those jump scares but still will keep you anxious through out the movie."

The biggest superhero movie of the year has suddenly hit streaming – here's how to watch
Look! Up on the TV screen! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman! Only five weeks after its theatrical release, James Gunn's reboot of DC Comics' most legendary superhero is now available for streaming. Normally, the quick move to video on demand would indicate poor box office performance, but Superman is a certified hit, grossing $500 million worldwide to date. Instead, Gunn says the move was strategic, to give audiences the chance to watch before the premiere of Season 2 of The Peacemaker on HBO – and if you've seen the film, you'll recognise the connection to the series. In addition to being the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year, Superman was also a critical hit: it currently holds an 83 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a mixed review, TimeOut praised David Corenswet's performance as the Last Son of Krypton, praising the 'lovely balance of sweetness, strength and self-doubt bubbling beneath the surface' he brings to the role.
