Bengaluru stampede: BCCI forms 3-member committee to formulate guidelines to avoid such incidents

Mint14-06-2025
Days after the tragic stampede at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Apex Council has decided to constitute a committee to formulate comprehensive guidelines for victory celebrations.
The BCCI took the decision to form the committee at the 28th BCCI Apex Council Meeting on Saturday.
'In light of the incident that occurred during the victory celebrations in Bengaluru, the Apex Council has decided to constitute a committee to formulate comprehensive guidelines aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future,' shared BCCI in a press release.
The committee will consist of Devajit Saikia (Chairperson), Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and Rajeev Shukla and will formulate the guidelines within 15 days.
Earlier on 4 June, a stampede took place in M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bangalore's maiden IPL trophy victory celebrations. In the event, 11 people were killed and several were injured.
The BCCI in its Apex Council meeting decided to establish a Working Group comprising five 'Umpire Coaches' to oversee the development of umpires and enhance their on-field performance. All these 'Umpire Coaches' must possess international umpiring experience and have served as former umpires.
Also, the Apex Council has decided to form a Working Group consisting of three former match referees. They would be responsible for monitoring the development of match referees and providing them with opportunities to improve their performance in cricket matches.
Among others, the BCCI's Apex Council confirmed the venues for India's upcoming white-ball home series against New Zealand, scheduled to be held in early 2026.

"Before A Match, I Would Automatically...": Pragyan Ojha Shares Cricketing Superstition

Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha shared his long-standing superstition. He mentioned that he always called his family before a match, but a missed call due to poor network in Sri Lanka led to him becoming Muttiah Muralitharan's 800th wicket. Ojha last played an international game in 2013, which was also the retirement match for Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar at the Wankhede Stadium. In the game, he managed to take ten wickets and was awarded the Player of the Match. Speaking on 'Cheeky Singles', Pragyan Ojha said, "Whenever I used to get in the team bus before a match, I would automatically call my mom, then my dad. Even if both of them were sitting together, I'd call them separately. Then I'd call my uncle, who was a cricketer and the one who inspired me to take up the game. Even if I had called my uncle 10 minutes before the match, he would have picked up. But in Sri Lanka, at that time, there was no network, and the call didn't go through. Because of that, I became Muttiah Muralitharan's 800th wicket." The 33-year-old Ojha had made his international debut in 2008 against Bangladesh in Karachi. A year later, he went on to make his Test debut against Sri Lanka . The spinner went on to play 24 Tests, 18 ODIs and six T20Is for India and finished with a total of 144 wickets in the international game. In the longest format of the game, he managed to take 113 wickets, with the best bowling figures of 6-47. He was last seen in action in 2018 as he played a first-class match in Dehradun. He also made a name for himself in the Indian Premier League as he played for the Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians. He was a key member of the Deccan Chargers IPL-winning team in 2009. He last played a match in the premier tournament in 2015 for the Mumbai Indians.

Surya Or Gill? BCCI Source Gives Big Update About India Captain For Asia Cup 2025

Last Updated: Surya led Team India when they last played a T20I match against England in Mumbai on February 2, 2025, whereas Gill is the current captain of India's Test team. Suryakumar Yadav is the current captain of India's T20I team, but Test captain Shubman Gill's super show with the bat in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England has raised calls for his promotion as India's captain in all three formats of the game. Many fans and experts of the game feel that the 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab should be given the leadership role, keeping the future in mind. It was reported earlier this week that Gill could be asked to lead the Indian team in the Asia Cup 2025, but a fresh report in the Times of India on Thursday (August 14) has indicated that Surya will continue to lead the Indian team in the eight-team tournament, which is set to be played from September 9 to 28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. As per TOI, the 34-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai, who is currently undergoing rehab at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, will fly to Mumbai from Bengaluru to attend the selection committee's meeting for Asia Cup 2025 on August 19. 'The selection meeting will be attended by India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, who will fly to Mumbai from Bengaluru, where he is currently stationed at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) while recuperating after a sports hernia surgery. This development confirms that SKY will continue as India's T20 captain, thus quashing all rumours around India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, also being given the T20 captaincy now," the TOI report read. It has also been reported that India's Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer won't be picked for the Asia Cup. As per TOI, Jaiswal has been told by the selectors to focus on red-ball cricket. 'With India looking to persist with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Gill is currently struggling to even make it to the side. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a great series in England, and middle-order bat Shreys Iyer are likely not to be picked for the T20 side. Jaiswal has been told by the selectors to focus on red-ball cricket," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
