Amritsar hotel industry faces setbacks amid threat emails, security concerns

Amritsar: The hotel and tourism industry in Amritsar, already struggling to recover from the Pahalgam terror attack, suffered another setback as reports of threat emails sent to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages the Golden Temple, spread globally.
This triggered a surge in security-related inquiries and a wave of booking cancellations.
AP Singh Chatha, president of the Amritsar Hotel and Restaurant Association (Civil Lines), said that hotel bookings dropped by nearly 50% following the news of threat emails sent to the Golden Temple management. "Many devotees who regularly visit the Golden Temple during Sangrand to offer prayers either cancelled or postponed their plans," he said.
Chatha explained that bookings already fell to 30% due to Operation Sindoor and have now plunged further to just 15%. He added that tensions with Pakistan severely impacted Amritsar's tourism industry, and uncertainty around the conclusion of Operation Sindoor further damaged traveller confidence. "Before the hospitality sector could recover, the threat emails to the Golden Temple management only worsened tourist sentiment," he said.

Chatha also claimed that one of the hotels in Amritsar received an extortion call in recent days, about which they informed the police.
However, Harpreet Singh Chadha, director of HK Clarks, stated that the hotel industry has not experienced any impact following the threat emails received by the SGPC. He explained that the rapid circulation of information through social media, including the content of the emails, helped people quickly recognise them as hoaxes, minimising panic and preventing cancellations.
Another director at a star category hotel in Amritsar, who didn't wish to give his name, said that they have been inundated with inquiries from around the world regarding the situation in Amritsar following threat emails received by the Golden Temple management. "Although we haven't had any cancellations specifically due to this incident, the sheer volume of concern from our clients is alarming. We fear potential cancellations or postponements of bookings, similar to what occurred during Operation Sindoor," he said, adding that while the current situation remains under control, the hospitality sector is on alert and closely monitoring developments to manage guest concerns and ensure safety.

Court dismisses PMLA case against Moser Baer, Ratul Puri & 11 others

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has dismissed a money laundering case against industrialist Ratul Puri , Moser Baer India Ltd, and 11 others, holding that the predicate corruption offence registered by CBI had already collapsed. The money laundering case stemmed from alleged bank frauds worth Rs 1,101 crore involving Moser Baer Solar Ltd (Rs 747 crore) and Moser Baer India Ltd (Rs 354 crore), once a leading manufacturer of CDs and DVDs. CBI accused Puri and others of siphoning loans sanctioned by a consortium of banks, with the purported connivance of bank officials who failed to monitor the funds. Special Judge (CBI) Sushant Changotra ruled Thursday that no offence under Section 3 of PMLA survived in the absence of proceeds of crime, which is a sine qua non for prosecuting under the law. "Accordingly, the present complaint is dismissed. The proceedings of this complaint case stand closed," the judge said, but left the door open for future action if a higher court overturns the May 24 discharge order. ED had said CBI discharge was not final until challenged and pointed to a pending Supreme Court review in a separate matter. But the court said such arguments had already been "exhaustively dealt with" by Delhi high court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Find out: this is how you clean your yoga mat! E-Khata bribe allegations shake Belagavi Council

Belagavi: Accusations of widespread corruption in e-Khata registration at the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) have sparked a heated debate. At Thursday's council meeting, MLAs and corporators alleged that revenue staff is demanding bribes ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 for property registrations. The claims fuelled public concern over transparency and accountability in the civic body. The process of e-Aasthi or e-Khata registration of properties under the classification of A, B, and C is underway in Belagavi city and across the district. An estimated 1.6 lakh properties need to be registered under e-Khata within the limits of Belagavi Corporation. The consolidation of documents required for e-property registration is facing many challenges as well. The common people are expressing strong dissatisfaction against this kind of exploitation, as the e-Khata registration will be processed only if the property owners come through intermediaries. A serious discussion took place in the BCC general meeting on the allegations of widespread corruption in e-Aasthi or e-Khata registration, arbitrary licensing of multi-storey buildings, and interference of middlemen in the documentation of properties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3 & 4 BHK Starts ₹1.65 Cr in Kukatpally Honer Signatis Book Now Undo According to a person who works as a middleman in e-property registration, the properties with legal documents are fewer in the BCC limit. Now, efforts are underway to regularise such properties by creating records. Many public representatives, including MLAs, are supporting the regularisation of encroached properties. It has resulted in the presence of middlemen in the corporation. The middlemen have emerged to create legal documents. MLA Abhay Patil took the officials to task in the council meeting, saying that the officials apply the laws and rules only for poor and middle-class people. However, they do not ask anything of those who are illegally building 10 to 15-storey apartments in the city. He cautioned that if this kind of exploitation is not stopped, the MLAs themselves will have to start the e-Khata distribution campaign.

Why no probe if a petition filed, HC asks joint CP

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has directed the joint commissioner of police (law and order) to show provisions of law that prohibit investigating officers from conducting investigations only because of petitions filed by accused persons. "It clearly gives an impression that investigating officers are either not serious in investigating the crimes or, with a view to shrug off the lawful responsibility, are adopting such sham and/or moonlight pleas before the courts," said Justices Ajey Gadkari and Rajesh Patil in an order passed on Wednesday. They were hearing petitions by two persons to quash an Oct 23, 2023 FIR registered against them by Goregaon police station under IPC sections, including for criminal breach of trust and cheating. The judges said the "record of the present case shocks the conscience of this court." To their query, the prosecutor, after taking instructions from the investigating officer, police inspector Satish Umare, submitted that the investigation is being conducted. However, he said due to the pendency of the present petitions, it is not concluded, and as a consequence, the chargesheet is not filed. "The aforesaid submission on behalf of the state is contrary to all fundamental principles of investigation and law of the land," the judges said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Oldest Actors in the World. "We are regularly coming across such sorts of pleas by the prosecution," they said. The judges mentioned examples of the police not conducting investigations; "petition is filed" and "consent terms are filed before the trial court in anticipatory bail applications" and "other palpably specious pleas. " Therefore, they deemed it appropriate to direct the joint CP to file his detailed reply to the petitions within a week. If he "comes to a conclusion that the investigating officer(s) have deliberately not conducted the investigation only with a view to help the accused, then what necessary action he will adopt against the concerned shall be stated in the affidavit," the judges directed. Adjourning the hearing to Aug 6, they also directed him "not to delegate his powers to any subordinate officer while filing the reply. "
