Talks on with RJD & Left, but Congress may settle for 50-60 seats in Bihar
NEW DELHI: Congress is likely to settle for a lower share of seats in Bihar than it contested in 2020, with sources saying that negotiations are on with a constituency-wise analysis among partners, including RJD and Left parties.
According to a Congress manager, the party is likely to get a tally between 50 and 60 seats to contest, which would be below the 70 seats it contested in the last election to the 243-member assembly. But Congress, sources said, is focusing more on the "winnability" factor than numbers, and is keen to ensure that the alliance does not face dissonance which a race among allies for a greater share creates.
While talks are ongoing, Congress's willingness to settle for a lower tally appears to be a bitter lesson learnt from the humbling experience of 2020.
Congress had secured a high tally of 70 seats after intense bargaining, but could win only 19, and ended up taking the blame for the RJD-led alliance falling just short of the magic number against the JDU-BJP combination, which scraped home.
Other parties in the alliance were CPM, CPI, CPI (ML), which had performed much better than Congress, compounding the criticism directed at the grand old party. The Patna failure seriously curbed Congress's bargaining power in the elections that followed in Tamil Nadu and other states where the party was a junior member of the alliance.

While the better-than-expected results in the 2024 parliamentary polls raised Congress stock, the Haryana and Maharashtra debacles have marked a setback to the party in the eyes of its allies. At the same time, sources said Congress too is aware of the need for unity among partners and does not want to come across as putting itself above the alliance's interests.
In Bihar, according to Congress members, the party is working to ensure coherence in the alliance and seeking to add value to the grand anti-NDA combine by amplifying Rahul Gandhi's messaging among backward classes. The attempt to secure seats for the JMM in Bihar is also seen as a step in that direction.

NSUI protests against NCERT's special module on partition
New Delhi: The Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) protested at Delhi University's Faculty of Arts against what it termed as the RSS-BJP's hateful and distorted NCERT module. The Congress and other opposition leaders are accusing the ruling BJP of 'interfering' with the functioning of the institutions and 'distorting' the country's history after a special module, released by the NCERT to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', held Jinnah, the Congress, and then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for India's Partition. Hitting back, the BJP said that the Congress is in pain because the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has brought a 'bitter truth' of India's Partition out for the students to study. Addressing the gathering, NSUI National President Varun Choudhary said, 'The history of India will not be written with lies and hatred. When the nation was fighting for freedom, these people were standing with the British.' 'The same traitors of that time are today blaming Gandhi, Nehru, and Sardar Patel with falsehoods. We will not allow the innocent children of this country to be victims of RSS and BJP's distorted history,' he said. NSUI announced that this movement will not be confined to Delhi University alone and vowed to continue the struggle in every state and university across the country until the 'hateful and misleading NCERT module' is withdrawn. The students' body asserted that restoring truth and dignity in the portrayal of India's freedom struggle is non-negotiable, and pledged to intensify its agitation in the coming days.

Haryana teacher's death: Mobile internet suspended in Bhiwani, Charkhi for 48 hours
Chandigarh: Amid widespread public outrage over the death of a 19-year-old teacher, the Haryana government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of mobile internet, and bulk SMS and dongle services, while allowing voice calls, in Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri districts for 48 hours. Manisha's body was found in a field in Bhiwani on August 13. She had been missing since August 11, after leaving school, purportedly to inquire about admission at a nursing college. The death caused massive outrage, with people blocking key roads in the district and the opposition parties, including the Congress, demanding a CBI probe. Although the order does not make a reference to the teacher's death, sources said it has been issued in the wake of developments pertaining to the case. Issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Sumita Misra, the order said that internet suspension will be in force from 11 am on August 19 till 11 am on August 21. 'It has been brought to my notice by ADGP/CID, Haryana and Deputy Commissioner, Bhiwani & Charkhi Dadri vide their requests dated August 19 that there is an apprehension of causing tension, annoyance, agitation, damage to public & private property and disturbance of public peace & tranquillity in the district Bhiwani & Charkhi Dadri... This order is issued to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order,' it said. The order further stated that the internet could be misused to spread inflammatory material and false rumours through social media or messaging services to disrupt peace and damage public assets. 'In order to stop the spread of misinformation and rumours through various social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter on mobile phones and SMS for facilitation and mobilisation of mobs of agitators and demonstrators who can cause serious loss of life and damage to public and private properties by indulging in arson or vandalism and other types of violent activities,' it said. Meanwhile, the emergence of a 'suicide note' in the death case on Monday turned the investigation on its head. Bhiwani Superintendent of Police Sumit Kumar had said the note was found near Manisha's body in a bag, which also had her Aadhaar card and other documents. He also said that there was proof of Manisha buying insecticide. 'In the viscera sample, the presence of insecticide has been confirmed in the body. So, there is self-purchase, there is a suicide note, there is poison in the body,' he said. The playschool teacher's family members, however, have insisted that she was murdered. The opposition parties have also flayed the BJP-led state government, claiming that the alleged murder was proof of a breakdown of law and order under the saffron party.
