Netflix's Department Q viewers need to watch ‘mind-blowing' series that inspired it

Fans of the Netflix show are being urged to watch the original series that inspired it.
Many of us have spent the last few days binge-watching Netflix 's new series Department Q and are already looking for our next fix. However, fans of the show are being urged to head over to Prime Video to watch the original series that inspired it.
In the hit show Department Q, Matthew Goode plays the brilliant but self-absorbed detective Carl Morck, who is tasked with cracking cold cases in a grimy basement office to boost the reputation of the Edinburgh Police.
However, upstairs in the office a shooting takes place which kills a new officer and leaves Carl's partner paralysed.
The nine-part series has been raved about by Netflix subscribers since its release last week. However, fans may be shocked to discover that the show is not entirely original.
The show was inspired by a series of 10 Danish Nordic crime novels known as Afdeling Q penned by author Jussi Adler-Olsen. These were subsequently transformed into an ongoing film series, kicking off in 2013 with four more instalments yet to be released.
Fans of the Scottish adaptation by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani will be delighted to know that the first three entries in the original series, The Keeper of Lost Causes, The Absent One and A Conspiracy of Faith, are currently available to stream on Viaplay UK via Amazon Prime.
There are many rave reviews of the first film which thriller enthusiasts insist is well worth a watch.
A Google reviewer couldn't hold back their enthusiasm, declaring: "Please watch this series. It is mind-blowing to see how much engaging the story is. Definitely a better one. I'll give it 9/10."
Echoing the praise, another fan gushed: "One of the most suspenseful movies I have seen recently. The characters are flawless, real and gutsy."
A further review emphasised the movie's power to captivate, saying: "The concept of the movie is gripping and keeps you glued until the very end of the movie. Danish suspense/murder mystery movies must get more traction worldwide.
"This was one of those movies which has almost all elements, stellar acting, magnificent story, excellent editing, great screenplay and direction."
Rounding off the glowing testimonials, a final viewer extolled: "One of the best crime thrillers ever made. You'll never be disappointed watching this."
Netflix haven't revealed yet if there will be a sequel to Department Q, but fans are encouraged not to miss out on what could be the ultimate binge-worthy experience.

Football steward sacked over memes wins payout from 'Orwellian' Norwich City FC

A football steward has won an £8,000 payout after he was wrongly sacked for sending memes about politicians under his club's 'Orwellian' disciplinary policy. Gennaro Romano, 49, was sacked by Norwich City Football Club in October 2023 after sending mocked-up images of Diane Abbott and Nicola Sturgeon alongside comments about Russell Brand to the head of the academy. The steward, who had a 12-year unblemished record, apologised and said he forwarded the WhatsApp messages by accident, an employment tribunal was told. The championship club sacked him for breaching its disciplinary policies, a decision described as 'riddled with unfairness'. A Norwich employment tribunal heard Mr Romano had been working as a steward on matchdays since 2011 alongside his main job with Royal Mail. In September 2023, he was accused of sending 'messages of an inappropriate nature' to Neil Hunter, head of the Canaries' academy operations. The photos were of former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon and MP Diane Abbott with captions about actor Russell Brand. 'This was at the time when the media was reporting that allegations of sexual assault were being made against Russell Brand,' the tribunal said. At a meeting with the club, he was shown a screen shot of two images received by Mr Hunter. Mr Romano claimed he had meant to send the photos to a friend who is also called Neil, but had forwarded them to his colleague by accident, the tribunal heard. The Carrow Road steward admitted the pictures were 'not nice', and apologised a number of times throughout the process, the tribunal was told. But club managers decided that he had not shown 'sufficient understanding or remorse', and sacked him. Upholding Mr Romano's claim, the tribunal said the club's decision-making process had been 'riddled with unfairness'. 'It was not one which any reasonable employer would have taken,' it added. Describing the club's actions, the tribunal said: 'If the club intends its disciplinary policy to have such an extensive, some might say Orwellian, reach, then it is incumbent on it to make that position clear.' The tribunal awarded Mr Romano £8,300. His claim of race discrimination was dismissed.

Emily In Paris issues casting call for 500 extras to appear on screen in new Netflix series - but there's a big catch

Emily in Paris has always been about beautiful people leading beautiful lives – and the next series, which is currently being filmed in Venice, is extending the aesthetic to include its extras. The hit Netflix show is filming in Venice from now until next Monday and a local casting call has gone out to find 500 extras. The catch? They all have to be 'beautiful' and take a dress size from 6 to 10 maximum. The casting call reads: 'We are looking for beautiful extras, with a lean physique and size from 38 to 42'. Emily in Paris, which stars Lily Collins as marketing executive Emily Cooper, sees the heroine move to Rome in series five. She is to take a romantic trip to Venice with handsome Marcello Muratori, played by Eugenio Franceschini. Filming locations this week will include the Hotel San Daniele, the Santi Giovanni and Paolo basilica and the Grand Canal. Lily Collins Instagrammed pictures of herself in a tomato-print sundress on one of Venice's famous water taxis over the weekend. 'A very Venetian getaway,' Collins, 36, wrote via on Saturday, August 16, sharing photos from the cast's shoot on a water taxi in Venice. 'When work becomes play.' Emily was left with a decision at the end of series four, as she was offered the position of the lead of the Italian Agence Grateau office. Despite falling in love with Paris and the agency, Emily admitted she was tempted by a new life - with a new man - in Rome. Fans will remember Emily and Gabriel's (Lucas Bravo) romance fell apart after they finally tried to make a go of their relationship after he broke off his relationship with Camille. Following a fake pregnancy scandal, Camille revealed she wasn't actually expecting and Emily and Gabriel tried to work out a romantic future. However, it wasn't meant to be for the star-crossed lovers who were unable to work out their differences and she was pushed into the arms of Marcello, after they met on the slopes of Megève, when she was abandoned at the top of a slope by Gabriel. They crossed paths again at a polo match in Paris and they enjoyed a night out together in the city, which lasted until the following morning when he asked her to come and visit him in Rome. Emily followed her heart and travelled to meet Marcello, where she was also tasked with acquiring his family's business by her boss Sylvie. The series is expected to air towards the end of this year, but one of the main characters has revealed they won't be returning. Camille Razat, 31, who plays Camille in the romantic comedy-drama - took to Instagram to reveal the shocking news with an emotional goodbye post after fans fumed at bosses for 'destroying the character'. Camille has played Emily's pal and love rival in the show since the programme hit the streaming service back in 2020. Now, after five years on our screens as Camille, the actress is ready to move on. Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto region, has hailed the arrival of the show in the city, which recently hosted the high-profile wedding of Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos to Lauren Sanchez. He said: 'It is extraordinary news, which confirms how our territory is increasingly attractive for major global audiovisual productions, thanks to its unique heritage and teamwork between institutions and operators in the sector.'

Rare loggerhead turtle rescued from the sea near Oban

The Loggerhead turtle was found to have a missing flipper – though the wound had long healed. On theory is that the lopsided marine reptile had drifted north due to its injury, and was propelled to the Scottish coast by the winds of Storm Floris. Mr Taylor spotted the turtle while sailing down the western sound of Kerrera last week on his charter boat the Laura Dawn II. Loggerhead turtles are more commonly found in warmer climes (Image: NQ) He said: 'I saw a basking shark in that area the day before, so I thought I'd go and have a look to see if it was still there. 'It had gone, but as I sailed past I noticed what I thought was a turtle swimming by. I turned the boat around and sure enough, there it was. 'It's not something that you see everyday. It was a bit of a shock, but awesome to see." The turtle was also studded with Goose Barnacles, further hindering its ability to swim. "This is becoming more common unfortunately, there's been quite a few Loggerheads found here over the last few years. "There's Iona, who was found on Iona beach, that we took care of, and a couple in Sea Life Blackpool and Brighton too." The turtle will is now being checked by vets before a decision is made on what to do with it. It is likely the animal will need a period of rehabilitation before being released. But its missing flipper may mean it may not be safe to do so. The turtle is being cared for at the Loch Lomond Sea Life centre (stock pic) (Image: NQ) Mr Sinclair added: "We've investigated what happened in terms of that flipper, it's not a new injury, it's actually healed quite nicely. We don't quite know the full ins and outs yet. "We're working with some of the top vets in the UK and Europe to determine what kind of condition she's in. Our local vets are helping massively too. "We'll be doing X-rays and CT Scans, but so far the signs are positive.' The Turtle has begun feeding at the aquarium, and has been swimming in a tank. Mr Sinclair said: "We've got her up to a good internal temperature, she's started swimming again, and is feeding. "Our ultimate goal is to rehabilitate and release her, we need to determine the extent of her injuries and how severe they are first though.
