LGL: Erie Police Athletic League

Dozens of Erie youth are about to have a great time thanks to the Erie Police Athletic League and JET-24's Loving Giving Local. The league was the recipient of this week's LGL donation of $250 from Auto Express Resale Center.
Erie's PAL began in 2016 after a 40-year hiatus. Its rebirth began with two police officers, working with 35 students at one location.
Now the program has 120 officers from 10 law enforcement agencies, reaching 1,700 students in 28 schools and community centers.
According to PAL Executive Director Lt. Tom Lennox of the Erie Police Department, there are many summer-time activities for youth.
'We do six camps throughout the summer. Gannon University, we have two camps at Mercyhurst University. We've got the police academy, we've got Dicks camp, we've got a camp over at the Erie Boys and Girls Club,' Lenox said.
'we also wrestle and box throughout the whole year, all year round. we're also hooked up with Mel Witherspoon's league for basketball come summer, and we're going to get youth baseball started up again,' he added.
PAL's mission is to strengthen bonds between officers and Erie's youth, help develop mutual respect, reduce crime, and build character.
'With over one thousand seven hundred kids involved, it's a lot of families. but it also gives kids a chance to meet police officers outside of their regular work,' emphasized Chief Dan Spizarny, Erie Police Department.
During the school year, the league takes young people on two or three field trips every month.
And that's how this week's Loving Giving Local donation will be used, according to Lenox.
'We're taking four charter buses down to Pittsburgh Science Center this month. In addition, we're going on a tour of PNC Park while we're down there. Then we're going to take the kids fishing at Pymatuning on the way home,' Lenox said.
'Just to see the police officers be able to bond with youth in the community, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about. For us to be able to deliver a donation puts a big smile on my face,' Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said.

Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: HF-L girls lacrosse

After securing the program's 15th sectional title in 18 years, the Primetime 585 Spotlight Team of the Week is the HF-L girls lacrosse team. The Cougars earned a brick by defeating Pal-Mac 9-6 in the Class C championship game. 'All of these kids are my own kids, and my husband feels the same way,' assistant coach Aria Goodberlet said. 'Every kid on this team, we treat every kid like they're our own. It's a blessing to watch these girls grow and see what they're capable of.' Freshman Harper Jacob, an All-Tournament selection, led the way for the Cougars with three goals to earn 84 points so far this season. Junior Shaye Angelo, committed to Duke University, scored two goals and was named tournament MVP. Angelo has been playing varsity since eighth grade and has a season-high 137 points going into regionals. 'Everyone tonight stepped up, played their role,' Angelo said. 'We had some awesome plays by younger classmen. Everyone played their role and we came together tonight.' Senior Caroline Smith has also been a force on defense for HF-L this season. After the win, Smith talked about HF-L's lacrosse dynasty, as the boys also ended this season with a sectional title. 'It's very special. I think it says a lot about our program, about how everyone is just one big family and just hard workers,' Smith said. Head coach Kristin Butka coached the junior varsity team for 15 years, but this year is her first season at the helm of the varsity program. 'Being a part of this program for 15 years, I've gotten to see each and every one of these girls grow from when they're itty-bitty and grow into these amazing young women,' Butka said. 'They truly played for each other tonight. Watching them put pieces together and pulling out the win at the end against a very strong Pal-Mac team, I could not be more proud of this team.' Congratulations to Coach Butka and the HF-L Cougars for being named the Spotlight Team of the Week! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The Odessa Police Department hosts the Odessa Police Athletic League yearly to offer kids in the Permian Basin a safe and active summer program. For $100 parents can register their children for a four-week program were children are provided with lunch and a variety of activities. This year children in the program had the opportunity to attend a movie at Cinergy, visit Urban Air, and play a variety of sports such as kickball and volleyball. This program has been around for three decades, and it has transformed the lives of several children and police officers. 'I've probably worked with over 10,000 children in this community over those 30 years, and honestly its the reason why I'm still in police work,' said Jon Foust, a sergeant with OPD.
