Six Pakistani aircraft shot down during Operation Sindoor: Air Chief Marshal AP Singh

Economic Times2 days ago
Synopsis
Air Chief Marshal AP Singh revealed that India's air defence systems downed six Pakistani aircraft during Operation Sindoor, retaliating for the Pahalgam attack. Air-to-ground missiles inflicted significant damage on Pakistani airbases and defence establishments. Singh emphasized the political will behind the mission's success, stating the armed forces had a free hand, with the S-400 system proving a game-changer.
In particular, the Air Force chief mentioned the S400 air defence system as a game changer, saying that Pakistan was not able to penetrate it and cause damage on the Indian side. New Delhi: India's air defence systems shot down six Pakistani aircraft during Operation Sindoor, while air-to-ground missiles caused significant damage by hitting airbases and other defence establishments inside the neighbouring country, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh said on Saturday. In the first details on the extent of loss suffered by Islamabad during India's cross-border strikes from May 7-10, carried out in retaliation for the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Singh said political will was key to mission success, and that no constraints were placed. The armed forces were given a free hand to manage escalation, he said."We have at least five fighters confirmed (as) kills and one large aircraft, which could be either an ELINT (electronic intelligence) or AEW&C (airborne early warning and control) aircraft, which was taken on at a distance of about 300 km. This is actually the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill we can talk about," said the air chief. He was addressing the Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Memorial Lecture in Bengaluru.
Prior to this, the Indian Air Force had not quantified how many fighters were shot down during the operation.
Pakistan had earlier claimed it downed Indian fighter jets, including Rafales, during the conflict.Elaborating on the damage caused on the other side, Singh said many airfields were hit and hangars housing F16 fighters, drones and aerial warning as wel as control aircraft were damage. 'We were able to get at least 2 command and control centres, like Murid and Chaklala... at least 6 radars, some big, some small. We have an indication of at least one AEW&C in that AEW&C hangar and a few F-16s, which were under maintenance there (were damaged).'The Air Force chief also addressed the issue of constraints placed on the armed forces that the opposition has been trying to rake up, making it clear that the armed forces had been given a free hand to manage the missions and escalation.'A key reason for success was the presence of political will. There were very clear directions given to us. No restrictions were put on us. If there were any constraints, they were self-made. We decided how much to escalate. Our attacks were calibrated because we wanted to be mature about it,' he said, adding, 'There were no, I repeat, no restrictions on us. Full freedom was given to plan and execute'.
In particular, the Air Force chief mentioned the S400 air defence system as a game changer, saying that Pakistan was not able to penetrate it and cause damage on the Indian side. 'The range of that system has really kept their aircraft away from their weapons like long-range glide bombs that they have. They have not been able to use any of those because they have not been able to penetrate the system,' he said.

Why is Trump not imposing extra tariffs on China just like India for importing Russian oil? Is he scared? VP Vance admits...

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump imposed 25 percent tariff on India for buying Russian oil. On being asked why he isn't imposing same tariff on China for buying Russian oil, there is no straight answer. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance has admitted that imposing tariffs on China is a very difficult decision. JD Vance has said that after imposing a huge tariff hike on Russian oil imports from India, US President Donald Trump is now considering similar measures against China. But he stressed that deciding to impose tariffs against China would be much more difficult and politically sensitive. Why did Trump not impose tariff on China for importing Russian oil? It is clear from the statement of Vice President JD Vance that Donald Trump is afraid of China's retaliation. In fact, when Trump imposed tariffs on China for the first time, China immediately retaliated and reduced the supply of those rare minerals to America, which are most needed by America's defense industry. The current situation is that American defense companies are struggling to make weapons, and many companies have been forced to extend the delivery date of weapons by two to three months. What did VP Vance say on the issue? That is why JD Vance has admitted that 'the relations between the two countries also affect many other issues.' That is, America is looking after its own interests and is avoiding imposing tariffs on China due to fear. Speaking on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures, Vice President JD Vance said, 'imposing tariffs on China is being considered, but no decision has been taken yet.' Vance said, 'The President (Donald Trump) has said that he is thinking about it, but he has not taken any concrete decision. The China issue is a little more complicated because our relationship affects many other things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation.' How much oil did China purchase from Russia in July? China's imports of Russian crude oil crossed $ 10 billion in July, the highest monthly level since March. However, the figures so far in 2025 are 7.7% lower than in 2024. Vance said that the President is 'reviewing his options' and 'a decision will be taken at the right time.' At the same time, senior advisor Peter Navarro warned that such tariffs 'can also harm America.' This statement of JD Vance comes after the recent 25 percent additional tariff imposed by the US against India. Due to which the total tariff rate on Indian goods has increased to 50%. This additional duty will come into effect from August 27.

US designates Balochistan Liberation Army, Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organisations

The United States on Monday officially designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its alias, the Majeed Brigade, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), marking a significant step in its ongoing counterterrorism efforts in South Asia. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the designation, stating that the BLA, previously listed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group since 2019, has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks since then, including those carried out by the Majeed Brigade. The addition of the Majeed Brigade as an alias expands the scope of the designation. The BLA and its faction have been involved in a series of violent incidents, including suicide bombings near Karachi airport and the Gwadar Port Authority Complex in 2024. In March 2025, the group claimed responsibility for hijacking the Jaffar Express train from Quetta to Peshawar, resulting in 31 deaths and over 300 passengers held hostage. Secretary Rubio emphasised that these designations play a vital role in disrupting terrorist financing and support networks. 'Today's actions demonstrate the US commitment to counterterrorism and limiting resources to violent groups,' he said. The BLA has been waging a decades-long insurgency seeking independence for Balochistan, a mineral-rich province of Pakistan. The group accuses the Pakistani government of exploiting the region's resources and marginalising the ethnic Baloch community. Both the US and Pakistan have designated the BLA as a terrorist organisation. In a related move last month, the US designated The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation, further reflecting Washington's efforts to combat terrorism in the region.

U.S. designates Pakistani Baloch separatists as a foreign terrorist group

The United States is designating the Pakistani separatist Baloch Liberation Army as a foreign terrorist organization, the U.S. Department of State said on Monday. The BLA is the strongest of a number of insurgent groups long operating in the area bordering Afghanistan and Iran, a mineral-rich region that is home to Beijing's investment in Gwadar deep water port and other projects. Recently, the BLA took responsibility for hijacking a Pakistani Jaffar Express train traveling from Quetta to Peshawar in March, killing 31 civilians and security personnel and holding over 300 train passengers hostage, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. The foreign terrorist organization designation by the U.S. triggers restrictions on providing financial support and other aid to the group.
