Police are still searching for a motive in the slayingThe mother of a rising country music star was stabbed to death inside her Virginia home by an armed intruder, who was then shot and killed by her husband, according to police.
Holly Hatcher, 62, was killed during a violent home invasion in Harrisonburg on Sunday, Aug. 3, the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.
Suspect Kevin Moses Walker, 41, was killed when Hatcher's husband, Michael Hatcher, 65, fatally shot him in the driveway, according to the release.
The incident was "highly unusual" and "apparently completely random," Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said in a video statement alongside Hatcher's son, country music artist Spencer Hatcher, and Michael Hatcher, per WTVR.
In a post on Instagram, Spencer wrote that due to "a monumental loss in our family," he was canceling three upcoming shows.
'I hope to make these dates up to my fans in the future. I appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones. We ask that everyone please respect our family's privacy at this time.'
Deputies responded to a 911 call just before midnight on Aug. 3 at the Hatcher residence, where they found Michael outside with injuries about his body, according to the press release. Walker was found dead on the driveway.
When deputies entered the home, they found Holly dead of apparent stab wounds.
Authorities contend Walker entered the home armed with a "large" knife and fatally stabbed Holly before getting into an altercation with Michael.
The altercation continued outside the home, where Michael retrieved a gun from his vehicle and fired a single shot at Walker.Hutcheson then shared what the RCSO and Virginia State Police have since learned about Walker's alleged movements before the attack.
Authorities say prior to the attack, Walker had purchased a knife and sleeping at Walmart and later allegedly broken into a store at he Endless Caverns campsite, where he was staying. The store showed signs of having been rammed with a vehicle, though nothing was stolen.
Police were still searching for Walker when Michael Hatcher called 911. The investigation will remain ongoing, Hutcheson said.
Hutcheson said he had known the Hatchers for years and that Holly Hatcher was his oldest son's teacher, noting the 'wonderful influence' she had on her students' lives.
In the meantime, the Hatcher family is still reeling from the violent attack that stole the life of Holly Hatcher.
"There's going to be questions that will never be answered, but all I can tell you is we've cried, we've hurt, and we've hugged, and we have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us, and between you," said an emotional Michael Hatcher in the joint video statement.

Teacher charged with killing of hikers at Arkansas park pleads not guilty to murder

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — The teacher who authorities say admitted to fatally stabbing two hikers at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas last month pleaded not guilty Monday to murder charges. Andrew James McGann entered the plea during a brief hearing before a state judge at Washington County's jail Monday morning. Circuit Judge Joanna Taylor scheduled McGann's next hearing for Nov. 14. He's being held without bond. McGann has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the July 26 killing of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41. The two were hiking with their daughters — ages 7 and 9 years old — and the girls were not injured in the attack. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive for the attack at Devil's Den, a 2,500-acre (1,000-hectare) state park about 140 miles (220 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock. McGann was arrested on July 30 at a barbershop in Springdale, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of the park. McGann had not yet started his new job at Springdale Public Schools and had previously worked in Texas and Oklahoma. Authorities have said he did not have a prior criminal record. State Police have said McGann admitted to the killings shortly after his arrest and that investigators matched his DNA to blood found at the crime scene.

Pickpocketing duo jailed for four weeks after being caught in the act

Two young women have been jailed for four weeks for pickpocketing in Oxford city centre. Victoria Cizmic, 18 and Lejda Secic, 24, both admitted to taking a large sum of money from the victim's rucksack in Christ Church. When the duo were reaching into the rucksack on August 8, they were caught in the act and swiftly detained. Cizmic and Secic, both of no fixed abode, were arrested the same day and charged the following day. They pleaded guilty to one count of theft in a hearing at Oxford Magistrates' Court on Monday, August 11. They have been jailed for four weeks. READ MORE: Police constable Riley Stokes said: 'Pickpocketing is a priority for our neighbourhood policing team, especially across Oxford city centre, and we hope this swift and robust conviction sends a clear message to anyone considering similar offences.' To avoid being pickpocketed, Thames Valley Police say not to hang stuff on the back of a chair or leave anything on the back of a pushchair or place your belongings out of sight on the floor. A spokesman said: "Remember, having a zipped bag doesn't mean you're totally safe. "Thieves have been known to walk behind victims while slowly unzipping bags. Yes, they can be that bold. So, never underestimate a pickpocket." He added: "You may have an idea of what a pickpocket looks like but they're far less likely to stand out in a crowd than you might think since blending in is part of how they avoid being caught."
