Johnny, Matthew Gaudreau's widows discuss grief, foundation in emotional interview
The widows of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau used the occasion of what would have been Johnny's 32nd birthday to formally launch a foundation to honor the late hockey players. But most of the interview with Meredith, Johnny's wife, and Madeline on ABC's "Good Morning America" dealt with the grief they have experienced in the nearly one year since their husbands died on Aug. 29, 2024. The brothers were hit by a suspected drunk driver while they were bicycling in New Jersey. Sean Higgins has pleaded not guilty to charges in the case. "Half of me, the best part of me, died that day, too," Meredith said. "I'm trying to be double now for my kids, even though I'm half of who I was." Both women were expecting at the time of their husbands' deaths. Madeline gave birth to her first child, Tripp, and Meredith her third, Carter. "Tripp's now hitting milestones, so that's heartbreaking because Matt was super excited to be a dad," Madeline said. The John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation, first announced in March, will help youth hockey initiatives, support hockey families that have faced tragedy and help other families that have been affected by drunk driving. "It was never lost on John and Matty about how expensive it is to maintain hockey as a hobby," Meredith said. The brothers played at Boston College. Older brother Johnny became a seven-time All-Star with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. Matthew played in the American Hockey League and ECHL and retired to coach youth hockey. The hockey community has kept the players' names in the forefront. USA Hockey had Johnny Gaudreau's jersey in the locker rooms at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Columbus fans sang "Happy Birthday" to Johnny Gaudreau Jr. at a game in February. The Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings honored the brothers with their outfits as they walked into their Stadium Series game. Meredith announced Blue Jackets first-round selections at the 2025 NHL Draft. "My daughter (Noa) is catching on," Meredith told ABC. "She's 2 and she asks for him a lot. She says, 'Daddy's in heaven' and I'm starting to explain to her what heaven is really because she wants to go to heaven and she says, 'I want him to come back' or 'let's call him.'" Madeline said she has been writing notes to Matthew since a couple days after the accident. "Lately it's been like, oh, you know, 'Tripp has two teeth now, but I know you know this.' Because it's hard for me to write and think that Matt isn't seeing this," she said.

Red Wings Fantasy Hockey Outlook: Kasper and Gibson Potential League Winners
John Gibson, Marco Kasper among several Detroit Red Wings poised to outperform their early undervalued Fantasy Hockey rankings. The Fantasy Hockey season is underway on several platforms, including Yahoo Sports, which has released its early player rankings ahead of draft season along with projections for the upcoming year. Some players are listed at great value, while others seem overvalued and may be better to avoid based on their current rankings. Fantasy Hockey continues to be one of the most exciting parts of the sport, giving fans the opportunity to build teams with their favorite players, whether from their hometown club or from across the league, all competing for Fantasy success. Some Detroit Red Wings are featured in intriguing spots within the early rankings. Certain projections appear to undervalue their potential, while others hint at expectations of a drop in performance. Here, we dive into some of the most interesting and compelling storylines taking shape in the opening stages of the Fantasy season. Coming Home? NHL Insider Says Red Wings Make Sense For Kyle Connor The Detroit Red Wings were among the more active teams in this summer's NHL free agency period, signing multiple players to short-term contracts and re-signing future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane. Kasper's Added Minutes and Role Make Breakout Possible Detroit's second line heading into next season is expected to be Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane centered by the young Marco Kasper. The 21-year-old Austrian forward enters his sophmore season and excelled during his time with the two veteran wingers as a rookie, posting a solid +4 net rating after playing 192.2 minutes together over 30 games. With a full season in the top six and more time with the line and on the second power play unit, he should blow past his 37 total points from last season and could also outperform his 50 point total projected by Yahoo for this season. His minutes per game last season finished at 15:27 and this should change as he will be in a more secure role in the top six with the potential of even hoping up to the team's first line at left wing. If they can't find a suitor for the line of Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, Kasper will have to be the answer but even without landing that job he should see his minutes jump to around 17-18, typical for a second line centre. This should lead to more chances to land more hits in which he's projected to finish with the second-most on the team after Mortiz Seider and fire off more shots as he's projected to finish with only 151 which is just six more than his total last season at 145 despite his playing time likely seeing a sizeable spike. If you also play in a league that counts face-off wins, his added time will likely see him jump from fourth on the team in wins last season to hopefully second or third. Gibson Making Case For League-Winning Sleeper The Red Wings brought in Gibson to be the goaltender who can hopefully lead them to the playoffs, but Yahoo doesn't see it that way. He's ranked behind players like Edmonton's Stuart Skinner, even though the Oilers are actively searching for his replacement, Pittsburgh's Tristan Jarry, who was sent down to the AHL last season due to poor performance, and Carolina's Frederik Andersen, who shares the net with Pyotr Kochetkov. Yahoo is significantly undervaluing a goaltender expected to play a major role in his team's push for the postseason. Early projections have Gibson winning just 20 games, allowing 123 goals, and making only 1,139 saves. That save total is lower than what he recorded in seven of his last ten NHL seasons. The only exceptions were during seasons when he was primarily a backup in Anaheim, during the COVID-19-shortened season, and in his rookie year. Realistically, Gibson is likely to start 50 to 55 games this season, with his win total more likely landing in the high 20s or even 30s. His fantasy value is shockingly low considering his expected workload, track record, and the improved team around him. Fantasy managers should take advantage of this overlooked opportunity. First Line Benefits For JVR? It's hard to say what the lineup will look like next season for the Red Wings but early signs have indicated they would like to keep together the second line with Kasper, Kane and DeBrincat. This leaves a hole at the very top of the lineup with Larkin and Raymond not having a competent left winger to round out the line. As of right now, lineup predictions have the veteran James van Riemsdyk occupying the spot which makes sense after he saw top line minutes last season when playing on the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is currently ranked outside the top 500 players as he sits 547th overall in preseason rankings. If the lines turn out to be true, van Riemsdyk could turn into a solid sleeper option as he consistently produces 35-40 points and could produce more on the first line. NHL Insider: Oilers Have Reached Out About Red Wings' Goalie Prospect
Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has managed to assemble one of the deepest prospect pools in the National Hockey League, which includes two highly regarded goaltenders expected to develop into future starters. 2023 First Round selection Sebastian Cossa and 2023 Second Round selection Trey Augustine are both considered to have tremendous potential and could form one of the league's most formidable tandems in the coming seasons. While Detroit's championship window hasn't realistically opened yet, a team that has lost back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals has reportedly contacted the Red Wings and expressed alleged interest in acquiring one of their goaltending prospects. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. Appearing on The Sekeres & Price Show, League Insider Cam Robinson - Content Director and Director of Film Scouting for Elite Prospects - revealed that he's been told the Oilers have reached out to Detroit about potentially acquiring Cossa to present to their fans as their goaltender of the future. "I've heard that they're looking a little more long term, and their field of vision is a little wider here," Robinson said of the Oilers. "I've been told they've contacted Detroit, I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine and think it was just a non-starter. Steve Yzerman and company really love that kid, and they should." "But they have a 6'6", 6'7" former first rounder in Sebastian Cossa sitting there, who is slowly been progressing up the way, played a full season in the East Coast League," Robinson continued. "They're not soured on him by any means, but I think they're hoping that he'd be quicker along the path, and the fact that they have Augustine there in the Red Wings system potentially allows him to be an expendable chip." Cossa has already begun his professional career in the American Hockey League after having played for the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings and the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. This past season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Cossa amassed a record of 21-15-5 while posting a 2.45 goals-against average. But Cossa's numbers weren't as strong down the final stretch of the regular season, and he faltered during the Calder Cup Playoffs, finding himself benched after surrendering nine goals in just two games. Meanwhile, Augustine has thrived not only with the Michigan State Spartans but with the United States in international play. "If Edmonton does want to get themselves someone that they can tag as like, 'Here's our goalie of the future that's maybe only a year or two years away', he'd be a great bet to go on," Robinson concluded. Unless the Oilers were to present Yzerman with a Godfather-style offer he couldn't refuse, the chances of Detroit trading Cossa are remote. At the same time, Yzerman did not sound optimistic about Cossa seeing NHL action in the 2025-26 season. "Today, I'm not prepared to say he's going to play in the NHL next year," Yzerman said on April 29 of Cossa. "He's got to do more." If the Oilers want to acquire a young goaltender with a high ceiling, they'll have to find a deal elsewhere, as the Red Wings aren't going to be parting ways with either Cossa or Augustine.
