2025 Ball State Football Predictions: Cardinals Ranked 134th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where Ball State lands in my Ultimate 136.
Ball State ranking: 134
Last year's ranking: 127
Top player: RB Qua Ashley: All-CUSA kick returner last season and honorable mention at running back; had 1,193 all-purpose yards last season.

RJ's take: First-year head coach Mike Uremovich has one of the toughest gigs in FBS, but let's not talk about the Ball State job as if it's coaching Mumford High School. Uremovich has got real playmakers in quarterback Kiael Kelly, a brilliant athlete, Ashley, who could catch 30 balls out of the backfield and tackles Adam Dolan and Chris Hood, who stand at 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-10, respectively.

Ball State still might not be very good, but it won't be because the potential to win six games isn't on the roster.

Via Frank Urbina, the analysis: Speaking of unique 2-guards, Amen Thompson fits the bill, as the 22-year-old is one of the most fluidly explosive backcourt athletes we have seen in quite some time, and a player with a massive ceiling. Thompson is a slippery guard with great size, strength and athleticism, capable of getting to the rim and finishing with aplomb. If he just had a more reliable jumper, we'd be projecting a first-time All-Star bid in Thompson's near future. Unfortunately for him, his jumper, especially off the dribble, remains a work in progress, as Thompson hit just 27.5% of his 3-pointers last season. His work as a pull-up shooter out of the midrange remains equally lacking. Regardless, as a guard standing at 6-foot-7 with a freakish 7-foot wingspan and solid ball-handling, Thompson's potential is through the roof. What's more, he's already so unique in that he rebounds like a big man and finishes near the basket as efficiently as one, as evidenced by his near-56% shooting accuracy in 2024-25. If he just figures out how to shoot the ball more accurately from the outside, we're talking All-NBA-level potential with Thompson. As is, he is already one of the top defenders in the game, one coming off the initial All-Defensive First Team of his career. We expect many more accolades in Thompson's future. Thompson is ranked just behind Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat (No. 6) and Devin Booker of the Suns (No. 5) on HoopsHype's latest positional list. Thompson's backcourt mate in Houston, Fred VanVleet, checked in at No. 17 on HoopsHype's list of top point guards. The rankings for small forwards, power forwards, and centers are still to come. "I'd hope the organization would view it as an honor as well. If I was asked, I'd definitely enjoy participating and I'd love to participate." But while Crochet sees the international tournament as an intriguing opportunity, the Red Sox are expected to see it differently. Historically, Team USA has had a hard time convincing top pitchers to participate in the event, as it raises their chances of being hurt and adds some competitive innings totals to their arms. Though he's proven to be resilient since becoming a starter last season, Crochet has a significant injury history from earlier in his career. And the Red Sox just made a long-term investment in him. As a result, the team might deny him the honor of joining Team USA. "Crochet has said he'd like to be a part of it, but I can't see the Sox signing off — given the number of arm injuries that tend to show up in spring training and Crochet's importance to the franchise," MassLive's Sean McAdam wrote. Former star Jeff Teague debates Sixers' Joel Embiid Hall of Fame case
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has accomplished a ton in his NBA career. The No. 3 pick in the 2014 NBA draft, Embiid has career averages of 27.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while being named an All-Star seven times, earning the scoring title twice, and also has an MVP award under his belt. All that's missing really is a championship on his Hall of Fame resume. However, Embiid doesn't necessarily need to win a title to get into the Hall. There are plenty of players who have not won a title that have earned the honor. For example, Sixers legends Allen Iverson and Charles Barkley are Hall of Famers, but did not win that elusive title in their careers. Former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague gave his thoughts on Embiid's Hall of Fame candidacy on his podcast "Club 520" (h/t Yahoo!): "It ain't matter, just get your chicken, brother. He's done after these three years for sure… "That (expletive) missed so many games, though. He missed years. He missed three years. He missed his whole first year or something," the retired guard said on his "Club 520" podcast. "That boy ain't never played 70 games. He might not make the Hall of Fame, bro. How many points he scored?… 12,000 ain't that many, I scored 10 (thousand)." Please be advised that the clip below contains language that some might consider offensive! Teague makes a good point about his injury history. It's a shame that many will remember Embiid for being injured and the games he missed more than for his incredible feats on the court. One has to believe the big fella will have a strong case for the Hall when it's all said and done, but that remains to be seen.
