SA Police make new claims about Royston Park arrest incident
South Australian police allege a man who became unresponsive while being arrested on Thursday morning 'violently resisted' officers, as an investigation continues into the actions taken during the incident.
Police attempted to arrest a 42-year-old Modbury North man on Payneham Road about 2:45am on Thursday, after saying they witnessed an "altercation" occurring between a man and a woman.
Police said the man "became unresponsive" as they attempted to arrest him.
He was taken to hospital where his condition has not yet been disclosed by SA Police or SA Health.
Police are investigating the incident and the actions of officers at the scene.
In an updated statement released on Thursday afternoon, provided to the ABC today, police alleged the man "was assaulting a female" when they intervened.
"While being restrained the man violently resisted police," SA Police alleged.
"After being restrained he became unresponsive and police administered first aid until SAAS (SA Ambulance Service) arrived."
SA Police said its investigation into the matter will examine "all evidence", including the body-worn video of the officers involved.
"The investigation and assessment of all evidence will determine the appropriateness of the actions taken by the officers," the statement said.
Police said earlier on Thursday that no-one was shot and no taser was used.
The incident prompted the closure of Payneham Road between Lambert Road and Lower Portrush Road on Thursday morning.
The roads have since reopened.

Fifth man charged over alleged looting in flood-devastated Mid North Coast
A fifth man has been charged with looting after historic flooding inundated the Hunter and Mid North Coast. Officers stopped a man in the early hours of Saturday morning, May 31, on Stevenson Street at Taree and say a search of the man's effects allegedly uncovered a string of suspected stolen items. Police say they found a television, vacuum cleaner, a slew of other electrical items and jewellery during the search, and also alleged the man was carrying methylamphetamine. The 45-year-old was taken to Taree Police Station where he was charged over the alleged drugs possession, carrying items suspected to have been stolen, and carrying "housebreaking implements". He was refused bail and faced Paramatta Local Court on Saturday via video-link where he was granted bail and ordered to return to Taree Local Court on June 17. The latest charges come after Police deputy commissioner Peter Thurtell warned on Monday, May 26, that increased numbers of officers would patrol flood-devastated areas for looters in the wake of record-breaking rainfall over the past fortnight. "The impact of this weather event has been unimaginable and to think they now have to be concerned about hanging on to whatever property they have left is a disgrace," Mr Thurtell said. "Stealing from people vulnerable during hard times like these is un-Australian." A fifth man has been charged with looting after historic flooding inundated the Hunter and Mid North Coast. Man, 69, charged over alleged sexual assault acts in Moreton, Qld
A 69-year-old ice cream van operator has been charged following an investigation into alleged sexual offences against two children and a woman in Brisbane's Moreton region. Detectives allege the man inappropriately touched the victims – two girls and a woman known to him – in separate incidents between January 2024 and April 2025. The alleged offences occurred in the suburbs of Redcliffe, Newport and Griffin. On May 29, detectives executed a search warrant at a Brendale residence and an ice cream truck on the property. Several electronic devices were seized for forensic examination and the man was taken into custody. The man has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, one count of indecent treatment of a child under 16, and one count of common assault. Redcliffe Detective Senior Sergeant Guy Ford said investigations were ongoing. 'We will allege the man knew two of the three victims in a professional capacity,' he said. 'Due to the nature of the offending, we believe there may be further victims and we encourage you to contact police if you have information. 'We are always thankful of people who are brave enough to share their story with us so we can investigate and work towards justice for that person.' Police bail was refused, and the man was expected to appear in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Friday.
