India has redefined its defence capabilities with emphasis on self-reliance
India achieved its highest-ever defence production in Financial Year 2023-24, with the total value touching Rs 1,27,434 crore. This marks a 174 per cent rise from Rs 46,429 crore in 2014-15, according to an official statement from the government.
Indigenous platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, Arjun tank, Akash missile system, ALH Dhruv helicopter, and several naval vessels have all contributed to this success. The growth has been powered by focused policies and a strong push for Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance. In FY 2024-25, India recorded defence exports worth Rs 23,622 crore, up from Rs 686 crore in FY 2013-14. The private sector contributed Rs 15,233 crore, while DPSUs accounted for Rs 8,389 crore, a 42.85 percent jump from the previous year.
Over 1,700 export authorisations were granted in the same year. India now exports a diverse range of products such as bulletproof jackets, helicopters, torpedoes, and patrol boats. The USA, France, and Armenia were the top buyers in 2023-24. With the goal of reaching Rs 50,000 crore in exports by 2029, India is firmly positioning itself as a global hub for defence manufacturing.
The government has issued five Positive Indigenisation Lists that limit imports and encourage local manufacturing. Over 5,500 items are covered under these lists, of which 3,000 had been indigenised by February 2025. The lists include everything from basic components to advanced systems like radars, rockets, artillery, and light helicopters. This structured push has ensured that critical capabilities are now being built within the country.
Two dedicated Defence Industrial Corridors have been established in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. These corridors have attracted investments worth over Rs 8,658 crore and signed 253 memoranda of understanding (MoU) with an estimated investment potential of Rs 53,439 crore as of February 2025. Spread across 11 nodes in both states, these hubs are providing the infrastructure and incentives needed to turn India into a defence manufacturing powerhouse.
The Ministry of Defence also signed 193 contracts worth Rs 2,09,050 crore in 2024-25 -- the highest ever in a single year. Of these, 177 contracts were awarded to the domestic industry, amounting to Rs 1,68,922 crore.
This shows a clear shift towards prioritising Indian manufacturers and strengthening the defence ecosystem within the country. The focus on indigenous procurement has also boosted job creation and technological advancement.
Launched in April 2018, Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) has fostered a vibrant ecosystem for innovation and technology development in the defence and aerospace sectors. By engaging MSMEs, startups, individual innovators, R&D institutes, and academia, iDEX has provided grants of up to Rs 1.5 crore to support the development of cutting-edge technologies. Strengthening its impact, the Armed Forces have procured 43 items worth over Rs 2,400 crore from iDEX-supported startups and MSMEs, reflecting growing trust in indigenous innovation for defence preparedness.
To further enhance self-reliance in defence technology, Rs 449.62 crore has been allocated to iDEX, including its sub-scheme Acing Development of Innovative Technologies with iDEX (ADITI), for 2025-26. As of February 2025, 549 problem statements have been opened, involving 619 startups and MSMEs, with 430 iDEX contracts signed.
India's maritime strategy centres on vigilance, quick response and active regional engagement. With a long coastline and key shipping routes to protect, the Indian Navy plays a vital role in safeguarding national and economic interests. Guided by the Prime Minister's vision of MAHASAGAR, India promotes cooperation and stability across oceans. Over the past year, in response to piracy and rising threats in the Western Arabian Sea, the Navy deployed over 35 ships, conducted more than 1,000 boarding operations and responded to 30-plus incidents.
These efforts saved over 520 lives and ensured safe passage for 312 merchant vessels carrying cargo worth more than 5.3 billion US dollars.
India's commitment extends beyond defence. It remains a reliable first responder in the Indian Ocean Region for humanitarian and disaster relief missions. In September 2024, India launched Operation Sadbhav to support Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar after Typhoon Yagi. In April 2025, it hosted the 'Africa India Key Maritime Engagement' (AIKEYME) exercise with ten African nations, strengthening maritime ties and shared responses to regional challenges. India's maritime outlook balances strong naval presence with inclusive diplomacy, shaping a secure and cooperative Indo-Pacific, the statement said. (ANI)

Around 25,000 farmers were enrolled for Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, and the state government provided Rs 32.75 crore as assistance and subsidy under Mukhyamantri Fasal Bima Yojana in the 2020-21 fiscal. In the dairy and poultry sectors, the state produced over 2.47 lakh tonnes of milk, 59,700 tonnes of meat, and 36 crore eggs in the 2023-24 fiscal year. During the period, the state produced 85,800 metric tonnes of fish and 45.65 crore fish fingerlings that helped the state to attain self-sufficiency in fish production and export fish to neighbouring states. 'Tripura has topped in egg production and second in meat and milk production in the Northeast Region. Tripura is in the second position in fish production in the region,' said the CM. CM Saha highlighted that the crime rate in the state declined last year, with 19.4 per cent fewer crimes than the cases in 2023 and 12.35 per cent fewer crime cases in the first five months this year compared to 2024. The state also achieved success in combating drugs, as records showed a 106 per cent rise in the seizure of drugs and other narcotic items last year. The officials also destroyed a massive amount of drugs during the period, a rise of 132 per cent, he said. Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for Atmanirbhar Bharat, CM Saha stated that it was not only a mere slogan but a resolution for 140 crores Indians to become self-reliant. The CM emphasised the need to push for Swadeshi products, saying that the Tripura government launched 'Vocal for Local' to prioritise the state-produced products. Saha said that the state is focusing on the indigenous people's overall development by implementing several schemes for their socio-economic development. The state would launch the 'Super 100' programme under the Mukhyamantri Janajati Unnayan Mission to impart training to the meritorious students, he added. In the tourism sector, CM Saha stated that different facelift works for Chaturdash Devata temple, Chhabimura, Kasba Kalibari, etc., are in progress. The chief minister said the government filled up 19,765 regular posts at different departments since 2018. Former Tripura Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb hoisted the national Tricolor at his residence in Agartala and celebrated the day by donating blood at Amarpur in Gomati district, interacting with security personnel, and visiting Shantikali Ashram in the area. Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, who was elected from Asharambari in Khowai district, took part in the Independence Day celebrations in the district. Recounting Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Ballabhbhai Patel, and others who struggled for the Independence of the nation, Debbarma said that Independence isn't a gift, but a duty to ensure that people can live together with equal rights everywhere in the country. Chef Whip Kalyani Roy, while taking part in the celebrations at Teliamura, said that the motto of this Independence Day is 'New India' and said the spirit of freedom is not about anecdotes of the past alone, but a vision for the future as well. At Udaipur in Gomati district, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy joined the celebrations at Udaipur Sports Complex. He paid homage to the brave freedom fighters who made a supreme sacrifice in the struggle for Independence. 'Independence Day is a Red-Letter day for all of us. We should never forget that our nation got freedom due to the sacrifices of our freedom fighters,' he said. Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy joined the Independence Day celebrations at Unakoti district and said the central and state governments in Tripura are working to develop education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, employment, and other crucial sectors to fulfill the dreams of freedom fighters. Meanwhile, in a sharp critique of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress MLA and veteran legislator Gopal Chandra Roy said, 'The BJP was born in 1980. Before that, there was the Jana Sangh and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). They had no role in the nationalist movement. The BJP was not there. The BJP and VHP had sided with the British; they were 'Razakars' (pro-Pakistani activists who were active in different parts of India before the Independence). They never participated in the Independence movement. The Congress, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, fought against the British, and eventually, the British had to flee'. The Opposition CPI(M) celebrated the day by hosting the Tricolor at the Communist Party headquarters in Agartala, which was attended by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Opposition Leader and politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury, and former deputy speaker Pabitra Kar. 'Democracy in the country is under attack. There is a concerted conspiracy to destroy secularism and change the Constitution itself. The working class, which comprises more than 75 per cent of the population, is still struggling to make ends meet. All democratic people of the country need to unite today and work towards developing these sectors, fight against communalism, and develop democracy, secularism. Only then, the spirit of Independence would be honoured,' Manik Sarkar said after joining a voluntary blood donation camp in Agartala. Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former minister Sudip Roy Barman joined the Independence Day celebrations. He reminded that it was the Congress that had struggled to free India from British colonialism. 'The freedom fighters belonged to the Congress party. We are soldiers of the same party. Even today, the Congress party is struggling to protect the rights of Indians under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi,' he said.

Muthoot Finance to inject ₹200 crore into home loan arm for growth
Gold loan firm Muthoot Finance plans to infuse Rs 200 crore into its housing finance subsidiary, Muthoot Homefin, for growth, said George Alexander Muthoot, MD and CEO of Muthoot Finance, in a telephonic interaction with Business Standard. Currently, the assets under management (AUM) of the home loan arm stand at Rs 3,096 crore in Q1 FY26, up from Rs 2,199 crore in Q1 FY25, registering a growth of 41 per cent. Muthoot also said that Belstar – the microfinance arm – will be diversified, as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduced the qualifying assets criteria for microfinance institutions to 60 per cent. Belstar has also added 10 gold loan branches to diversify its loan book. Although collections and recoveries in the microfinance sector have returned to normal levels, a risk-based scoring model has been introduced as a new control measure to improve the quality of lending and to contain stress in the sector. "Earlier, [micro] loans were given left, right, and centre. Now, it is more responsible, and the focus is on giving loans to new customers," he added. Belstar's micro loan portfolio has decreased to Rs 7,500 crore in June 2025, from Rs 10,000 crore in April.
