Pakistan, Russia take holistic stock of bilateral ties
After meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, the SAPM called on Sergey Tsivilev, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation and Co-Chair of the Pakistan-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC).
Both sides took a holistic stock of bilateral relations, identifying key areas of trade, energy, connectivity, new Steel Mills, cybersecurity, etc for future cooperation.
The SAPM emphasised on the prospects of further development of energy cooperation between Pakistan and Russia. In addition, he briefed Tsivilev on the recent developments in South Asia, while lauding Russia's role in de-escalating tensions.
Tsivilev expressed satisfaction on the outcomes of the ninth Pakistan-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) held in Moscow in 2024 and hoped for productive next IGC in Pakistan this year, adding that Pakistan has the potential to become a 'transit hub'.
Later, the SAPM called on Yury Ushakov, Senior Aide to the President on Foreign Policy Issues.
During the meeting, the SAPM briefed him on the recent escalation in the South Asia and outlined Pakistan's position vis-à-vis India's aggressive actions, especially unilaterally holding the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance.
Besides these meetings, the SAPM gave two interviews to the leading Russian TV networks, expressing his candid views on the increasingly positive trends in Pakistan-Russia relations and recent escalation between Pakistan and India.
He also had an extensive exchange of views with a group of academics and journalists from prominent print and electronic media.
Furthermore, the SAPM was hosted by Valdai Discussion Club, a prestigious think-tank in Moscow, for a talk on 4th June, on the recent developments in South Asia and Pakistan-Russia relations.
Overall, the visit of the SAPM was highly successful, with several important official engagements and candid exchanges with parliamentarians, a think tank, several academics and journalists. It paved the way to explicitly share Pakistan's perspective on the recent situation and other important issues, such as IWT to the Russian side.
There was widespread appreciation for the manner in which Pakistan was enhancing its relations with Russia, in important areas of trade, investment, energy and connectivity routes.

Imported, local cars: Govt, PAMA agree on equal safety standards
ISLAMABAD: The government and the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) have agreed upon equal safety standards for imported and local manufactured cars. The development came here on Friday during a meeting between a delegation of PAMA who called on the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan. During the meeting, the PAMA delegation presented their demands to the ministry and said that a custom duty at 40 percent must be imposed on all the imported vehicles, reduction in depreciation allowance from one percent to 0.5 percent, introduction of testing regime as well as proper dealership network and review of valuation mechanism to discourage import of used vehicles in view of investment already made by renowned companies. They further urged clarity on future auto policy especially review/revision of tariff in line with National Tax Policy (NTP), provision of adequate protection to local manufacturing vis-à-vis imports, implementation plan for WP-29 regulations to be adopted in future, promotion of local manufactured auto parts and government support for export promotion. The industry urged the ministry to further clarify on the upcoming 'Motor Vehicle Industry Development Act 2025,' saying act may cover detailed mechanism for testing, performance, implementation of regulations in coordinated manners. Moreover, the act should cover responsibilities of both the government and the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) industry and before the passage detailed discussions should be carried out on the matter. The meeting was attended by key representatives from PAMA, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, and CEO of the Engineering Development Board (EDB). The agenda of the meeting focused on reviewing and enhancing the quality standards for both imported and locally-manufactured vehicles in Pakistan. Addressing the participants, SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan emphasised the government's unwavering commitment to public safety, stating, 'The lives of our citizens are precious, and ensuring their safety is the government's top priority.' He underscored that international safety and quality standards will be applied uniformly to all imported and locally manufactured vehicles. 'These standards are not only essential for the protection of human lives but also play a vital role in environmental preservation,' he added. To implement the new standards effectively, it was agreed that the EDB and the automotive manufacturers will work in close coordination and consultation. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the SAPM, held a meeting with the Ambassador of Uzbekistan, Alisher Tukhtaev, to discuss the forthcoming visit to Uzbekistan and avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation. During the meeting, both sides deliberated on strengthening ties in light of the Prime Minister's Vision and directives, emphasising enhanced trade, investment, and mutual collaboration. Discussions also covered potential agreements aimed at deepening economic relations between the two countries. Key areas of focus included trade cooperation, B2B engagements, and the establishment of a warehouse in Peshawar to support logistics and commerce. The two dignitaries also explored collaboration in various sectors such as industry, agriculture, transport, mining, and minerals. Khan highlighted the potential for joint ventures in the tractor and mining industries, and stressed the importance of identifying new opportunities to achieve the $2 billion trade target with Uzbekistan. He shared plans for delegations from both countries to hold meetings in sectors including information technology, e-commerce, and banking. The Uzbek ambassador expressed keen interest in Pakistan's textile industry and invited SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan to visit Uzbekistan's Techno Park. Additionally, the ambassador showed interest in Pakistan's pharmaceutical sector. SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan noted that Uzbekistan imports $3 billion worth of pharmaceutical products annually, presenting a significant opportunity for Pakistan's pharma industry. He added that both countries would also collaborate in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence and e-commerce to drive innovation and economic growth. At the conclusion of the meeting, SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan presented a traditional souvenir to Ambassador Alisher Tukhtaev as a gesture of goodwill and to commemorate the strengthening ties between Pakistan and Uzbekistan. India's rhetoric fueling instability: FO
Listen to article Pakistan on Friday categorically rejected what it called "baseless and irresponsible statements" made by Indian political leaders in the Lok Sabha regarding the so-called "Operation Sindoor", reiterating that such rhetoric only fuels instability in South Asia. Foreign Office spokesperson, Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan, addressing his weekly press briefing, said, "The world knows that India carried out attacks on Pakistani territory without a shred of credible evidence. The so-called strikes on alleged terrorist sites led to the martyrdom of innocent civilians. India failed to avail itself of Pakistan's immediate offer for a joint probe into the Pahalgam incident, which speaks volumes about the falsity of their claims." He underscored that Pakistan's defense capabilities remain a strong deterrent against any adventurism by India. "For us, the only path to normalcy lies in mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and adherence to international laws and UN charters. India's continued reliance on jingoism, chest-thumping, and empty rhetoric is jeopardizing regional peace and stability." The spokesperson also dismissed recent remarks by the Indian Home Minister on the Indus Waters Treaty, saying such "displaced assertions carry no legal weight and cannot alter established international agreements." Reaffirming Pakistan's position on terrorism, Ambassador Khan stated: "Groups like BLA and TTP are recognised as terrorist organizations. Evidence shows they are being funded and facilitated from across the border. We have consistently raised this matter with Afghan authorities and expect decisive action." On relations with India, he said Pakistan remained open to dialogue based on mutual respect and international law but would continue to vigorously defend its sovereignty against any false narratives or hostile actions.

Pak-China armies to continue safeguarding shared interests: COAS
RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI(M) on Friday emphasized that Pakistan Army and People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China enduring partnership will continue to play a pivotal role in promoting regional stability and safeguarding shared strategic interests. Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate 98th anniversary of the founding of the PLA of China here at General Headquarters, the COAS reaffirmed that the Pakistan Army and the PLA are true brothers-in-arms. Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong graced the occasion as the chief guest, said a news release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). The ceremony was also attended by Major General Wang Zhong, Defence Attaché, officials from the Chinese Embassy, and senior military officers from the tri-services of Pakistan. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir extended a warm welcome to the Chinese guests and congratulated the PLA on its 98th founding anniversary. He lauded the PLA's pivotal role in China's defence, security, and nation-building. The COAS underscored the strength and strategic significance of Pakistan-China relations, emphasizing that the bond between the two nations is unique, time-tested, and exceptionally resilient amid evolving regional and global challenges. The Field Marshal highlighted that the Pakistan-China strategic relationship exemplifies mutual trust, unwavering support, and shared commitment. He stressed that despite shifting strategic dynamics, the friendship between the two nations has remained steadfast and unshakable. Addressing the gathering, the Chinese Ambassador expressed his sincere gratitude to the COAS for hosting the event commemorating the PLA's 98th anniversary.
