GPT-5 launch promises PhD-level AI expertise
Listen to article OpenAI unveiled on Thursday its GPT-5 artificial intelligence model, the latest iteration of the technology behind ChatGPT, promising broader access and enhanced enterprise capabilities. GPT-5 will be made available to all 700 million ChatGPT users, OpenAI said, as it seeks to demonstrate significant leaps in performance that justify continued heavy investment in AI infrastructure. The release comes amid a surge in capital spending by the world's leading technology firms Alphabet, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft, OpenAI's principal backer which together plan to invest nearly US$400 billion in AI data centres this fiscal year. 'We've built GPT-5 to feel like you can ask a legitimate expert, a PhD-level expert, anything,' OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman told reporters at a San Francisco briefing. He highlighted the model's prowess in software development 'software on demand' as well as its strong performance in writing, health-related queries and financial analysis. In demonstrations, GPT-5 generated complete, working programmes from plain-text prompts, a capability dubbed 'vibe coding'. Early reviewers praised its coding skills and proficiency in science and mathematics but noted that the upgrade from GPT-4 to GPT-5 seemed more incremental than previous generational jumps. Despite these improvements, Altman conceded that GPT-5 cannot yet learn autonomously, a milestone needed to match human adaptability. He noted that OpenAI's 'test-time compute' technology where the model applies extra processing power to tackle difficult questions will be accessible to the public for the first time, helping to address tasks that demand advanced reasoning. Industry economists warn that enterprise spending on AI remains tepid compared with strong consumer uptake of applications like ChatGPT. 'Consumer spending on AI just isn't going to be nearly enough to justify all the money being spent on data centres,' said Noah Smith, an economics writer. OpenAI is in preliminary talks to allow employees to liquidate holdings at a US$500 billion valuation, up from its current US$300 billion. Meanwhile, leading AI researchers command signing bonuses of up to US$100 million. Nearly three years after ChatGPT's debut ignited the generative AI boom, OpenAI's challenge remains sustaining transformative leaps in capability as it confronts a data-scarcity barrier and the technical complexity of training ever-larger models. 'Building more infrastructure globally is essential,' Altman said, underscoring the need for widespread, localised AI availability to fulfil the company's mission of benefiting all humanity.

Record-setting rally continues at PSX
Listen to article The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) continued its remarkable ascent on Thursday as the KSE-100 index surged 0.39% to an all-time high of 145,647 points. The rally was driven by strengthening sentiment, robust corporate earnings and improving macroeconomic fundamentals. The momentum followed the government's move to soften its tax enforcement campaign through mandatory consultation with the business community prior to arrests in tax fraud cases, a step seen as fostering a business-friendly environment. After oscillating between intra-day high of 146,081 and low of 145,250, the benchmark KSE-100 index posted a gain of 558.64 points and settled at 145,647.14. Arif Habib Corp MD Ahsan Mehanti commented that stocks closed at a new record high as investors weighed a 17% year-on-year (YoY) surge in exports for July 2025. "Rupee stability, surging global crude oil prices and equities, and expected positive outcome of the Pakistan-US tariff deal drove the bullish close at the PSX," he said. KTrade Securities, in its market wrap, wrote that the bourse had another positive session as the KSE-100 index gained 559 points to close at 145,647. Early gains were fuelled by investor optimism following news of US President Donald Trump raising tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, which is considered favourable for Pakistan's export-oriented sectors, it said. The index touched intra-day high of 146,081 before some profit-taking set in. However, in the latter part of the session, oil stocks gained traction amid reports of progress on circular debt payments. Key contributors included Pakistan Petroleum, Pakistan State Oil and Oil and Gas Development Company. With strong momentum and growing investor confidence, KTrade expected the bullish trend to continue in the coming days. Topline Securities reported that the bullish momentum from previous sessions was carried through, underpinned by strong institutional inflows, particularly from local mutual funds. This sustained optimism propelled the benchmark KSE-100 index to intra-day high of 993 points. Later, it closed at an all-time high of 145,647, up 559 points, it said. The rally was largely fuelled by index heavyweights including Pakistan Petroleum, Habib Bank, Engo Fertilisers, Systems Limited and Oil and Gas Development Company, which contributed 738 points. Market participation remained vibrant, with total traded volumes reaching 713 million shares and traded value hitting Rs55.7 billion, Topline added. Some 52 stocks rose and 47 fell, where key contributors to index gains were Pakistan Petroleum (+5.22%), Habib Bank (+2.86%), and Engro Fertilisers (+3.36%). In major news, AHL mentioned, Maple Leaf Cement reported FY25 earnings per share (EPS) of Rs10.98, reflecting a 69% YoY growth and exceeding market expectations. After seven consecutive sessions of strong, one-sided price action, near-term support for the index rose to 145,000 points. Some consolidation during Friday's session would be considered healthy. As the market heads into the final session of the week, the KSE-100 is up 3.27% week-to-date, AHL added. JS Global analyst Mubashir Anis Naviwala observed that the PSX rally was fuelled by strong corporate results, boosting investor confidence across the board. Trade agreement with US: Pakistan govt says secured lowest tariff rate in South Asia
ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani said Pakistan has secured the lowest tariff rate in South Asia—19 per cent—following a trade agreement with the United States, a move expected to boost exports. The minister, Thursday, told the National Assembly during question hour that the 19 per cent tariff rate offered to Pakistan is the lowest in the South Asian region. He said that bilateral relations with the United States (US) have strengthened as a result of government's efforts. He highlighted that 'the agreement comes at a time when many had not anticipated such progress in Pakistan-US relations.' US cuts Pakistan tariff to 19% from 29% after trade deal 'At a time when cipher conspiracies were being floated, no one expected a deal like this with the US. Even the opposition will have to acknowledge that despite numerous challenges, our trade ties with the US have improved,' he remarked. He accused the opposition of hoping for deteriorating ties with Washington and pushing the country towards default. However, he credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's efforts for steering diplomatic relations in a positive direction. He also pointed to the high-level engagements that contributed to the breakthrough, including a meeting between Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and US President Donald Trump, as well as discussions held by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar with senior American officials. He said 'this trade deal is the outcome of coordinated efforts by key government leaders.' He noted that the government was working to lower energy tariffs, with a new energy policy on the horizon. 'We hope that the government's initiatives will lead to a reduction in production costs and make Pakistani exports more competitive,' he added. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
