Trio of Florida softball players to compete in this summer's MLB Home Run Derby X

USA Today13-07-2025
This year's edition of the MLB Home Run Derby X competition will feature three representatives from the Florida softball program. Catcher Jocelyn Erickson, along with outfielders Taylor Shumaker and Amanda Lorenz, will participate on behalf of the Orange and Blue in the co-ed competition.
The format for the MLB Home Run Derby X is based on a 3-on-3 baseball design that focuses on power hitting, athletic catching and defense. Each team consists of two MLB players and a female softball player to complete the triad, while the games are set up to combine "the most exciting elements" of a nine-inning baseball game into a 30-minute format.
"This summer, 16 teams will feature across 6 qualifying events in Atlanta, Round Rock, Durham, Oklahoma City, Des Moines, and a sixth venue to be announced," the official website notes. "Winners guarantee their place at the Finals Weekend in Salt Lake City, where the 2025 Derby X champion will be crowned."
Erickson will be the first Gator to compete on July 13 in Atlanta, while Lorenz will participate in the Oklahoma City event on August 23 and Shumaker will compete in the Iowa event on August 30 in Des Moines.
The competition begins on July 13 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, and the finals are slated to be played from Sept. 19-20 in Salt Lake City.

Texas A&M will host elite 2026 4-star SF in early September

With new head basketball coach Bucky McMillan now at the helm, Texas A&M's recruiting efforts have increased significantly this summer concerning the 2026 cycle. So far, four-star small forward Bryson Howard and four-star shooting guard Dakari Spear are two players to watch, as Howard will visit College Station at the end of the month, while Spear placed the Aggies in his top 5 program list. On Sunday, it was revealed that another elite 2026 prospect, four-star small forward Ralph Scott out of the prestigious IMG Academy, will reportedly visit Texas A&M in an official capacity on September 5, followed by OVs to Tennessee and LSU. While the Aggies have yet to land a 2026 prospect, McMillan's success in landing 13 players from the transfer portal, which now includes former Southern Illinois star guard Ali Dibba, is built around relationships, similar to Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko's recruiting efforts. On the court, Scott possesses an inside and outside game with the size and length to rebound at a high level, but, most importantly, he is an elite athlete who will likely lead a team in scoring at the next level. Scott will also take an official visit to Houston at the end of the month, which is likely Texas A&M's biggest competition outside to Tennessee. According to 247Sports, Scott is currently positioned as the 44th-ranked prospect in the class, the 18th-ranked small forward, and the 8th-ranked prospect in Florida. Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler leaves Colts' preseason game early with injury

Colts injury update: Rookie S Hunter Wohler out. What we know Former Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler recorded two tackles during the Indianapolis Colts' NFL preseason Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Saturday. He played just one drive during the contest before leaving the game with a foot injury. The ailment halts the former Badger's rapid progress since joining the Colts. The former seventh-round pick (No. 232 overall) delivered a team-high nine tackles (six solo) during the Colts' preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens last week. He was also a standout from the team's joint practice against the Ravens, notching two highlight interceptions, including one against two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. Wohler is currently listed as the Colts' backup strong safety behind three-year veteran Nick Cross. While the Former Badger's injury may put a temporary halt to his push for immediate playing time, his spot on the 53-man roster shouldn't be in question. At the very least, Wohler will be a day-one contributor on special teams. Stay tuned later this week as the severity of Wohler's foot injury is made clear. The immediate question is whether he'll be able to suit up for the Colts' preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 23. Dodgers 'Hopeful' Offense Continues to Produce Despite Max Muncy Injury

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost one of their better hitters recently to the injured list. Max Muncy was officially placed on the IL on Friday retroactive to Wednesday with a right oblique strain. The Dodgers now have to hope Muncy's absence does not lead to more issues offensively. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 05: Max Muncy #13 of the Los Angeles Dodgers at bat during the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium on August 05, 2025 in Los Angeles,... LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 05: Max Muncy #13 of the Los Angeles Dodgers at bat during the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium on August 05, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"The Dodgers can only hope their offense doesn't melt down with the absence of third baseman Max Muncy like earlier this season," wrote MLB insider Bob Nightengale. "The Dodgers averaged an MLB-low 3.5 runs a game, hitting .217 while going 10-15 in the 25 games Muncy missed." Los Angeles has won its first two games against the San Diego Padres since Muncy was added to the IL. The Dodgers scored nine runs in those two games entering Sunday, and the offense wasn't showing signs of slowing down. However, one series is a much smaller sample size than the 25 games Muncy has missed so far this season. Muncy struggled for the first 2 1/2 months of the season, and he was even viewed by some as a candidate to be designated for assignment in May when he was hitting below or just above the Mendoza line. Despite the early-season struggles, the 34-year-old infielder has turned it around. Given how tight the race is in the National League West, the Dodgers can't afford to go into an offensive slump without Muncy in the lineup. The two teams are going to be neck-and-neck over the final six weeks of the season. Los Angeles will be waiting for Muncy to return as soon as possible and hopes he doesn't need a rehab assignment.
