MK Party demands resignation of KZN MECs, slams 'Dynasty Driven by Corruption'
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has called for the immediate resignation of KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane and Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka, following what it describes as serious and deeply troubling revelations of corruption, abuse of power, and political patronage.
The party has given both MECs until July 26, 2025, to resign, failing which it will submit a formal removal request to the Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce.
In a statement, the MK Party expressed "deep concern and serious disappointment at the troubling revelations recently brought to light" and stated that its caucus in the provincial legislature refuses to address Simelane and Hlomuka as "Honourable", saying the title "is meant to uphold integrity, not be inherited and stained through corruption".
The party claims that Simelane's family business, Kwazi-Gugu Investments CC, allegedly received duplicated payments totaling R1.42 million from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture.
It further alleged that in 2008, her family controversially acquired a farm through a loan from Ithala Bank, then led by Zweli Mkhize, who also allegedly facilitated an R11.8 million loan for his own wife. From 2014 to 2019, Simelane chaired the KZN Legislature's Agriculture Portfolio Committee, overseeing the same department accused of funnelling funds to her family.
According to the party, these financial benefits continued even after her appointment as Health MEC, while public healthcare services deteriorated and hospitals reportedly ran short of medication.
MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said: 'This is not governance. This is nothing else but a dynasty driven by corruption.'
The party also accuses Hlomuka of presiding over a compromised Department of Education, citing allegations of political interference in the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP), tender rigging, and procurement manipulation.
A leaked list of service providers, allegedly handpicked and linked to Hlomuka, has emerged, pointing to what the party describes as an unlawful network of political patronage.
The improper appointment of the Department of Education's CFO, the party says, further reveals deep systemic rot under Hlomuka's leadership.
Ndhlela added: 'The MK Party's caucus in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature rightfully refuse to address Sipho Hlomuka and Nomagugu Simelane as 'Honourable', when this title is meant to uphold integrity, not be inherited and stained through corruption.'
The MK Party is demanding the immediate suspension of what it calls a "rotten and illegal tender process" and has called for a full, independent investigation.
It is also calling on the President to issue a proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe the matter, and for the Auditor-General, the Public Protector, and the Hawks to urgently investigate all public funds received by Kwazi-Gugu Investments CC and any other entities linked to the implicated individuals.
'Our country is not, and will never be, a feeding trough for ANC-linked elites. The people of South Africa have suffered enough and will no longer fund political dynasties while their children starve and services collapse.
"We, the MK Party, will not stand idly by while corruption wears the mask of leadership. This is a fight for truth, dignity and the future of our people," said Ndhlela.
When approached for comment, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health told IOL: 'Please direct your queries to the ANC. She occupies her current position through ANC deployment, not through the Department of Health.'
Attempts to obtain a response from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education spokesperson were unsuccessful, while the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson indicated that a response would be provided in due course.
The ANC's response will be included once it has been received.

MK Party responds to Shivambu calling them a ‘family stokvel' for ‘personal benefits'
Floyd Shivambu has soured has made some serious accusations against some the MK Party's hierarchy Image: File The MK Party has responded to Floyd Shivambu, who previously praised his move to the party as a 'solid and sound decision,' but now dismisses it as a 'family business' serving 'personal interests.' MKP national spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, told IOL that they have bigger problems to deal with than just responding to Shivambu's criticism. 'We don't want to talk about individuals who go around saying all sorts of things about MKP,' he said. This follows Shivambu's recent change of tune, calling the MKP family a stokvel of former president Jacob Zuma. From praising Zuma and describing his leadership as the one to follow, he suddenly said MKP was not an honest party. 'uMkhonto weSizwe is not an honest organisation, it's a family business of President Jacob Zuma for the narrow benefit of him and his family that is the fact of the matter. 'We tried to speak about that, we served in the leadership of MKP at the highest level. We can tell you it will be treasonous if we don't tell the people of South Africa that there is no political organisation called MKP, it is a family stokvel for personal benefit, he said. Last month, Shivambu alluded to some in MKP leadership who were linked to corruption, others fighting among themselves, and even someone sniffing drugs. Shivambu exposed allegations of fund embezzlement and political sabotage, signalling a significant shift in his political journey. Shivambu further claimed that he was targeted for attempting to halt the alleged siphoning of approximately R7 million per month from the party's coffers. IOL Politics

ConCourt set to rule at 2 pm on Ramaphosa's police minister move
The Constitutional Court is expected to rule on Thursday in MK Party's urgent application challenging the legality of Prof Firoz Cachalia's acting police oversight appointment Image: Kamogelo Moichela/IOL MK Party said it would not be surprised if the Constitutional Court rules in favour of President Cyril Ramaphosa after 'unlawfully' placing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave — accusing the judiciary of being "captured" and complicit in political manoeuvring. The ConCourt is expected to hand down judgment in Johannesburg on Thursday. This is after it heard the MKP's urgent application challenging Ramaphosa's decision to place Mchunu on special leave and appoint Professor Firoz Cachalia, a non-MP, in an acting oversight role over the police portfolio. Cachalia is expected to begin his duties on Friday, August 1. MK Party insisted the move was unconstitutional, flagging serious legal and procedural violations. 'Well, we know that, as you heard KZN Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi saying, the judiciary is complicit and implicated. So, that alone is telling,' said MKP national spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela. Ndhlela said they hoped that the court would consider the merits of the case and not politicise the issue. Citing sections 91 and 98 of the Constitution, Ndhlela contended that only a current member of Cabinet can temporarily assume the powers of the police minister. 'Section 98 is very clear,' he argued. Next Stay Close ✕ 'You can't appoint someone from outside Parliament in an acting Cabinet role. That's constitutional delinquency, and it cannot be allowed.' The party said the decision to appoint Cachalia — a respected academic, who is not currently in Cabinet — bypassed constitutional requirements and set a dangerous precedent. 'You must first appoint a person to the Cabinet, and then they can serve. Not the other way around. That's not semantics — it's the law.' MKP's court challenge comes amid growing tension between the party and state institutions, particularly the judiciary, which it accuses of favouritism and political bias. 'Even during the elections, one of our consistent messages was to expose how polarised the judiciary has become,' the party said. 'The law is applied selectively, and that's a reality South Africans need to confront.' While expressing hope for a fair outcome, MKP made it clear that it would view any adverse ruling as further proof of institutional decay. 'If the outcome goes against us, then the judiciary will continue to expose itself. But our case is honest, and the President is being dishonest with the public. That's what this is really about.' Govt to review school feeding scheme programme amid 'irregularities' in KZN
JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube says her department will be reviewing the National School Nutrition Programme. This in an effort to ensure there are no irregularities and that pupils get quality food. Shortly after she took office, Gwarube put the school feeding scheme contract, worth almost R10 billion, on hold. "Since I have been in office, I have been in the process of reviewing the national school nutrition programme and also seeing how it is administered," she said. Gwarube slammed the spending of funds allocated for the nutrition programme on anything other than its purpose. Recent allegations of corruption in KZN have also made front-page news. The minister argues that it cannot be that there should be no scenario where children are not school nutrition.
