Bethesda man kidnaps woman at gunpoint, barricades himself in vehicle: police

A Bethesda man is facing multiple charges after police say he kidnapped a woman at gunpoint and barricaded himself in a vehicle.
Officers observed the woman, who was a passenger, jump out of the suspect's vehicle.
The suspect, 31-year-old Robert Deeter of Bethesda, has been charged with kidnapping, first-degree assault, stalking, harassment and multiple handgun charges.
GAITHERSBURG, Md. - A Bethesda man has been arrested after police say he kidnapped a woman at gunpoint and barricaded himself in a vehicle.
The suspect, 31-year-old Robert Deeter of Bethesda, has been charged with kidnapping, first-degree assault, stalking, harassment and multiple handgun charges.
Montgomery County police responded to the area for the report of a kidnapping on Friday, April 18, in the 10300 block of Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda around 2:33 p.m.
During the investigation, officers located Deeter in the 7000 block of Democracy Boulevard, driving a red Toyota RAV4 in the area and observed a woman on the passenger side.
Officers followed Deeter to the area of Rockledge Drive and I-270, where the woman jumped out of the vehicle. Officers spoke with the woman victim, who confirmed that Deeter, who she knew, had kidnapped her at gunpoint.
Officers continued to follow Deeter to the area of Old Georgetown Road and Beech Avenue, where he barricaded himself inside the vehicle and refused to get out of the car.
Negotiators communicated with Deeter and successfully convinced him to surrender. Deeter was taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered from the vehicle. He is being held without bond pending a bond hearing.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man accused of carjacking WREG Reporter Mike Suriani earlier this week appeared in court on Friday. Lashunaye Railford, 43, was charged with carjacking and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. On Tuesday, Reporter Mike Suriani was approached while attempting to fill up at the Mobil gas station on E.H. Crump Boulevard and Third Street at around 10:30 a.m. A man wearing a mask walked up to Suriani with his hand on a gun sticking out of his pocket and demanded his news vehicle. The man got away with the WREG vehicle along with all of Suriani's personal items and equipment. Suriani was left uninjured. The Memphis Police Department says the suspect, identified as Railford, was found on Wednesday in the Toyota RAV4 in the 1700 block of South Orleans Street and was taken into custody. Man accused of carjacking WREG reporter arrested 'Carjacking is a class B felony; you face 8 to 30 years confinement should you be convicted of that offense,' said Judge Taylor Bachelor, General Sessions – Division VII. 'You face an additional mandatory minimum three, five, six, or 10-year sentence depending on the facts of the case,' said Judge Bachelor. Railford told the judge that the $75,000 bond and an attorney were unaffordable, and a public defender, Javier Bailey II, has been appointed. Railford's new, court-appointed attorney asked the judge to have his client mentally evaluated. Suspect wanted after WREG reporter carjacked at gunpoint in Memphis Bailey and Railford spoke briefly before Bailey told the court they did not want a bail review hearing, but did want a mental evaluation. WREG Investigators uncovered Railford's criminal history, to include an arrest in 2005 for burglary of a motor vehicle and theft, for which he served six months in jail. In 2010, Railford was convicted of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault and served six years. Driver charged in fatal high-speed crash that arose from high school beef
Hamilton police have arrested a driver involved in a high-speed collision on the Lincoln Alexander Parkway last fall that killed a 15-year-old teenager and seriously injured two others. The speed race-turned-fatal crash — stemming from an escalating feud between neighbouring high schools — occurred on the eastbound lanes of the Linc around 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11, 2024. In a news release at the time, police said witnesses saw two or three vehicles racing near the Upper Gage Avenue overpass. Two cars — a Ford Focus and Toyota RAV4 — then collided and lost control. As the driver of the Ford regained control and fled the scene, the Toyota careened off the road and rolled multiple times. Jayden Russell was ejected from the vehicle and later died in hospital. Eight months after the crash, police announced Thursday the arrest of a 20-year-old local man who was allegedly driving the Ford. Ezatullah Haidari faces charges of dangerous operation causing death and bodily harm, as well as criminal negligence causing death and bodily harm. The death of Jayden — a St. Jean de Brébeuf student remembered as an athletic, funny and aspiring entrepreneur who got his first job at 13 — came amid an ongoing beef between students at his high school and nearby Nora Frances Henderson. A flag outside of St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary School flew at half-mast after one of its students, 15-year-old Jayden Russell, was killed in a high-speed crash in October 2024. In the week leading up to the crash, at least 100 people were involved in a parking lot fight between students from the east Mountain schools. The day before the collision, bear spray was used in a brawl outside Nora Francis Henderson, police said. Two people were treated by paramedics, with one taken to hospital. Police said the incident involved kids from both schools. While the fatal speed race on Oct. 11 ended on the Linc, police said at the time it began in the parking lot of Brébeuf, with a black Ford Focus and silver Infiniti chasing a Toyota SUV. Haidari was one of three people in the Ford, none of whom were injured in the crash that followed the chase, police said on Thursday. Police said Haidari attended a police station shortly after the collision. His arrest comes in the wake of a 'lengthy and a thorough investigation.' The 20-year-old is the second person to be arrested in connection with the fatal crash — although the first no longer faces charges . A day after the collision, police charged an 18-year-old who was driving the Toyota with dangerous operation causing bodily harm and death. In February, charges against the teen were dropped, with court hearing there was no reasonable prospect of conviction. The Crown said a lengthy probe by police's collision reconstruction unit indicated the driver wasn't the 'factual or legal cause' behind Jayden's death or the bodily harm suffered by another passenger. Following the withdrawal, the teen's lawyer, Dean Paquette, said in a statement that his client sped away from the other cars because he feared for his safety. The teen wasn't a student at Brébeuf or Nora Frances and was 'unaware' of the conflict brewing between the two. Paquette said his client had three passengers in the RAV4 when the Ford and Infiniti 'menacingly approached' his vehicle in the Brébeuf parking lot, causing him to flee 'for his own life and those of his passengers.' A few seconds before the collision, the Toyota reached a top speed of more than 140 km/h, according to Paquette. The lawyer said the Ford pulled up on the driver's side of the vehicle and veered 'sharply and suddenly' into it, sending it off the road and rolling four to six times. The driver and another passenger were seriously injured, while Jayden was killed. The Ford and Infiniti fled. Jayden's death was marked at his school by a moment of silence and a memorial at his locker. A GoFundMe launched in support of his family has raised around $20,000. 'Every parent's worst nightmare is losing a child,' the page reads. Police continue to investigate the crash.
