If you haven't had the pleasure of visiting the Champagne region in north east France and its beautiful villages, vineyards and Champagne houses, this is the year to do so. July 4, 2025 marks the 10-year anniversary since Champagne hillsides, houses and cellars became a UNESCO World Heritage site. And there will be major festivities on the day including a big party in Champillon, in the heart of the historic hillsides, that will include a picnic, music, dance and birthday cake. Festivities will continue throughout the month to celebrate the world's most prestigious sparkling wine.
On July 14, 2025 on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay there'll be a picnic, toast and party with fireworks. July 19th will feature a picnic concert of the Flâneries Musicales at the Parc de Champagne, in Reims.

Champagne is unique to the Champagne region and is a protected appellation (AOC); recognised in more than 130 countries worldwide (although not, surprisingly in the United States). It is so highly prized that a special committee controls every aspect of the sparkling drink from how many grapes are grown in the region and when they'll be harvested, to the number of bottles that are to be sold each year. Since 1941, the CIVC (Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne) has promoted the common interests of Champagne houses and growers and ensured the wine has retained its prized status globally. The Comité records all transactions, track the movement, manage the reserve and protect the appellation against counterfeit products.

But Champagne is not just simply prized and enjoyed thanks to the efforts of the Comité but because of the unique qualities of the actual product itself, created every year by over 16,000 winegrowers from grapes harvested by hand by 120,000 pickers. The cool climate and unique terroir (chalk soil) where the three main grape varieties are grown (Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Meunier) contribute to the wine's unique flavors. Champagne has long been associated with special occasions, joyful moments, success and positivity. As Charles Dickens said: 'Champagne is one of the elegant extras in life.'

The Champagne vineyards date back to Roman times when they were planted in the 5th century (or possibly even earlier). From 816 to 1825, France's royalty was crowned in Champagne's Reims Cathedral, where Champagne was the prized drink of coronation banquets and it was customary to gift these wines to any royalty visiting the region. This has included British royals since the 17th century when King Charles II first enjoyed the sparkling wine while Queen Victoria was the first British monarch to issue royal warrants to Champagne producers. So Champagne came to be known as the wine of coronations and referred to as "the wine of Kings and the King of wines.' Champagne's revered reputation was so firmly established by the twentieth century that even Winston Churchill famously said to motivate his troops, "Remember gentlemen, it's not just France we are fighting for, it's Champagne." Today, the UK is Champagne's second biggest export market (after the United States) in volume and in value. And although the wine became the drink of Royalty, in Champagne today, you'll find it in most households throughout the region. In fact, Champagne makers will tell you that in the region, Champagne is 'vin de pays' — nothing pretentious, easy drinking and not just for special occasions.

There are 16,200 winegrowers in Champagne, 130 Cooperatives and 370 Champagne houses that produced 271.4 million bottles of Champagne in 2024. Many are open to visit. The Avenue de Champagne in Epernay is a great place to start. Many of the well known Champagne Houses including Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët and Pol Roger are located here and offer tastings and tours and of course, the option to buy bottles. Also, there's an excellent shop, Trésors de Champagne, that offers a wide selection of Champagnes, starting as low as 18 euros a bottle, some of which you can try by the glass.
After experiencing Champagne Avenue, venture out to some of the houses and growers including these five that will give you a good range of Champagne styles from large and medium houses to small, independent growers.
Champagne Pommery was founded in Reims in 1836 by Monsieurs Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno. Initially, the company focused on wool production before moving into Champagne. But it was the genius of Madame Louise Pommery who not only created the first vintage "brut" Champagne in 1874 but greatly expanded the business with production increasing from 300,000 bottles to 3 million. Today, the house sells around six million bottles annually and stores 25 million in reserve in its cellars. It has an impressive visitor offering with extensive tours in 18 kilometers of Roman cellars, various tasting packages and a lovely Art Nouveau villa to visit. And since 2003, Pommery has had ambitious annual art exhibitions in the cellars.
Champagne Besseraat de Bellefon, founded in 1843 in Epernay, is a medium size house, producing 700,000 bottles a year. They use the Meunier grape, the only indigenous grape to Champagne and using a unique process and less sugar results in a unique taste and bubbles that are 30 percent finer than other Champagnes. The house has a shop and you can stay on site in one of three lovely suites.
Champagne Vincent d'Astrée, launched in 1956 in Pierry, is a cooperative of five families buying from 170 growers. It has a lovely tasting room and offers a cellar tour where you can see the world's largest Champagne flute (160 bottles are required to fill it). It's a boutique operation headed by a female winemaker and produces 50,000 bottles a year consisting of 4 vintage and 4 non-vintage.
Champagne Jacquart in Reims opened in 1964 and today has a stellar signature collection (all aged at least 3 years) ranging in price from 38 to 130 euros. You can buy these from their shop and try the wines by the glass on their charming terrace, including the priciest Alpha 2014, just released this summer.
Christian Muller is a small grower in Mailly Champagne that produces 20 -25,000 bottles a year of 4 different Champagnes, all excellent. Their stunning new terrace above their shop overlooks their own vineyards and is an idyllic spot for a tasting. Where to Stay and Eat in Champagne

A good base for a visit to the region is Hotel Margaux, a new 4-star property in Epernay with 27 elegant rooms and suites.
Unsurprisingly, visitors are spoiled for choice of excellent restaurants. Table Kobus in Epernay is a fantastic bistro with four prix fixe options with French classics like Foie Gras and duck magret. For an upscale dining experience, La Brasserie Le Jardin is in the beautiful grounds of Le Domaine les Crayeres in Reims. Chef Christophe Moret offers a seasonal, local menu a la carte or prix fixe. And while in Reims, be sure to visit the magnificent Cathédrale de Reims. The recommended serving temperature is between 8 and 10°C. To chill a bottle of Champagne, place in an ice bucket filled half with water and half with ice, 30 minutes before serving. Or chill at the bottom of the fridge a few hours before opening.
When opening a bottle of Champagne, start by removing the wire cage and its foil cap. Keep a firm grip on the cork and be sure not to point the bottle at anyone. Next, still keeping a firm hold on the cork, hold the bottle by the body and rotate it gently, removing the cork from the neck without letting it escape. When serving, do not hold the person's glass when pouring.
As glamorous as it looks, the coupe is not the best glass for Champagne. Choose a fairly tall and tulip-shaped – bulbous at the bottom glass to give the bubbles enough room to develop but which tapers at the top to fully concentrate the aromas.

Italy Hopes Growing Chinese Passion For Winter Sports Leads To Olympic Business Gold

When it comes to ancient culture, few countries rank with Italy and China in influence and depth. Italy has the most UNESCO World Heritage sites – 61, followed closely by China with 60. In the here and now, the two cultural superpowers are finding a new common interest: winter sports. Italy has longer-standing success when it comes to ski visits. Last year, it had 32 million, ranking No. 4 in the world. Interest and investment in skiing in China has taken off since the country hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics, however, turning it into one of the fastest-growing ski markets in the world. From May 2023 to April 2024, the number of skier visits at domestic ski resorts was 23 million, a year-on-year increase of 16% and more than double that of decade ago, according to the China Ski Industry White Book. The number of ski resorts open to the public in 2023-2024 rose by 22 from a year earlier to 719, the report said. With Italy poised to host the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina on Feb. 6-22, businesses from the southern European country are looking to seize upon growing Chinese interest in winter sports to promote commerce related to tourism, skiing and travel at home, said Lorenzo Riccardi, chairman of the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce in a recent Zoom interview. The Beijing-headquartered business group has about 800 members. 'We know that China really focused on the Olympics in terms of communications, brands and company exposure' in 2022, Riccardi said. 'We believe it is a very important opportunity.' The push comes at a time when changes in global trade are leading countries to look for new partners and common bonds. New U.S. tariffs of 15% on most imports from Europe are 'significantly' impacting the Italian economy and 'Made in Italy' exports to the U.S., Riccardi said. 'The Italian government is looking to new markets and emerging regions,' mainly in the Far East, to offset the blow, he said. The disruption to Italian companies already invested in China is less than it might be for newcomers because they have already adjusted supply chains and flows of goods in recent years, Riccardi said. Italian investment in China is increasingly for China or regional Asian markets – not aimed at shipments to the U.S., he said. Italian businesses benefit from the locally well-received centuries-old travels of businessman Marco Polo along the Silk Road, and more recent ties between the European Union and China, which this year marked 50 years of diplomatic relations. Two-way trade between Italy and the EU was $36 billion in the first half of 2025 – little changed year-on-year; the EU is China's largest trading partner after the ASEAN block. High-profile visits by Italian government leaders have also helped. Italy's Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini visited China in July to give a boost to businesses ranging from machinery makers to fashion brands; he also highlighted the convenience of domestic travel within Italy on the country's high-speed rail system, and complemented China on its advances. 'China is an innovation giant that cannot be ignored,' Salvini reportedly said. Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni traveled to Beijing last year and reached an agreement on a three-year action plan. China's interest in winter sports took off after the government embraced the industry ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Chinese athletes rose to the moment, winning a record 15 Winter Olympics medals including nine gold (Italy had 17), attracting a large social media audience and new skiers and snowboarders to the slopes. 'If the (Beijing) Olympic Games in 2008 were relevant, the Winter Olympics (in 2022) were even more interesting in generating new trends in terms of the Chinese market and the experience of Chinese consumers,' Riccardi said. This year, 'luxury and fashion brands traditionally not into sports or the mountain economy are now focusing on this segment as a new niche market,' he said, including Prada and Georgio Armani. Italian companies know from home how winter sports such as skiing can help regional economies and business due to the popularity of those activities in the Italian Alps and earlier Olympic experience. The country first hosted the Winter Olympics in the ski town of Cortina d'Ampezzo (abbreviated as Cortina) in 1956; Italy then hosted the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960, and the Winter Olympics again in Turin in 2006. Businesses have 'excellent' experience in sports, tourism, hospitality and lifestyle pursuits, Riccardi said. One Italian company, TechnoAlpin, had a notable presence at the 2022 games in China as a supplier of the artificial snow. 'We believe it is an opportunity to attract Chinese tourists, consumers and travelers, and an opportunity to promote cooperation between Italian and Chinese companies,' he said. The China-Italy Chamber itself will focus on the Olympics, winter sports and culture at its annual gathering in Beijing, 'Notte Italiana,' in November. Chinese corporate sponsors to the 2026 games include Alibaba, Mengniu and TCL. To be sure, business is China remains challenging for Italian and other foreign firms. 'Competition with local and international companies in the Chinese market is the No. 1 challenge for Italian investments into China,' Riccardi said. Geopolitical instability, changing global tariffs, new trends in economic relations with other major economies, rising operational costs and supply chain disruptions 'are considered the major challenges for Italian companies in China' by Chamber members, Riccardi said. And yet the opportunities remain at a time when China's GDP growth of 5% is among the world's best. Based on a member survey in July, Riccardi said Italian companies – as a group the second largest manufacturers in Europe -- see industrial innovation as an opportunity to show 'Made in Italy' technology. 'The rising demands of the Chinese middle class can create opportunities for Italian quality products and foreign brands looking to this giant market that is China,' he said. Partnership with Chinese groups is considered an avenue for expansion into the market by Italian firms, Riccardi continued. 'Italian companies consider that it is necessary to have a long-term and stable presence in the market' that often involves one or more local partners, he said. Italians in Shanghai first formed a chamber-like organization to advance local exchanges in 1903, Riccardi noted. 'Not only Marco Polo is a symbol,' said Riccardi. 'We have had our business community long present.' Cultural heritage between the two ancient cultures 'is very relevant for companies' even today, he said.

Japan celebrated a milestone in 2024, breaking its all-time tourism record, according to Travel and Tour World. But this growth came with a big downside. Popular destinations such as Kyoto, Tokyo, and especially Mount Fuji have become overwhelmed by the number of visitors. High-end Hotels Are Stepping Up to Tackle This Big Sustainability Crisis

Here's an uncomfortable fact: the hospitality industry is responsible for around 10 percent of the world's food waste, with hotel buffets being a major contributor. But younger travelers, in particular, are asking for change, says Annie Jones, owner of Telos Travel, a luxury agency. 'People are saying, 'I don't want a buffet, I don't want a French restaurant if I'm not in France,'" she says. 'They're really looking for the local taste.' Jones notes a shift in interest toward properties such as the new Hôtel du Couvent , in Nice, France, which gathers ingredients for meals from its on-site farm. It's one of several properties in the Luxury Collection that are at the forefront of sustainable dining. 'These big brands have the opportunity to make a big difference,' Jones says. To that end, the Luxury Collection, which is part of Marriott International, brought together 13 of its leading chefs from around the world at MAD Academy, the sustainable-food initiative in Copenhagen founded by Noma chef René Redzepi. Over the course of three days, they attended seminars on reducing waste in innovative ways, learned how to rebuild supply chains to encourage local purchasing, and made plans for how to implement changes back at home. 'The academy made it easy to see how their specific skills, from understanding flavor to organizing staff to channeling creativity, are essential in shaping the future,' says Melina Shannon-DiPietro, executive director of MAD. 'Partway through the second day, there was a conversation where it felt like the landscape shifted: everyone understood that for this to work, the Luxury Collection would need to look at their daily checklists and their standards. That's how deep this would run.' The first-of-its-kind gathering has already sparked innovation. Take chef Joris Larigaldie, who leads culinary operations at Costa Navarino, the resort destination in Greece that's home to the Romanos , among other properties. After attending MAD, he went back to the hotel with the idea to turn spent peels from squeezing orange juice into 'a delicious fruit gelée for a welcome snack,' Shannon-DiPietro explains. The Gritti Palace , in Venice, reimagined its cooking classes, which now include a guided visit to seafood and produce stands at the Rialto Market. The hotel has also planted 6,000 artichokes on nearby islands, with the aim of using the resulting bounty on the property. In Athens, Hotel Grande Bretagne now sources its figs from a family farm in nearby Evia. Jan Horák, the chef at Augustine Restaurant at the Prague hotel Augustine , admits that he was initially skeptical of the brand-wide push for more sustainable practices. But after attending MAD, he's all in: 'A huge thing I took home was being able to define what 'local' means for me,' Horák explains. 'It doesn't have anything to do with whether you're German, Czech, French, or Italian. You just have to look around you to see what's growing.' His commitment was on full view this spring when I sat down for a dinner he had prepared—and was greeted with warm sourdough and butter topped with an electrifying twist on Marmite made from bread left over from the breakfast buffet. Horák had similarly repurposed cast-off items to deliver a vegetarian course of cavatelli pasta. The meal culminated with a dish of fallow deer and parsnips, which had been baked in a crust of leftover coffee grounds. Unbelievably, it tasted like a true luxury.
