From CPM backer to astrologer of high & mighty, ‘Guruji' Madhava Pothuval has seen it all

New Indian Express16 hours ago
KANNUR: In the swirl of controversy over CPM state secretary M V Govindan's recent visit to an astrologer, one fact is often overlooked: A V Madhava Pothuval is no ordinary soothsayer.
From Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to industrialist Gautam Adani and Supreme Court judges, Pothuval's clientele reads like the who's who of India's political and business elite. 'Guruji' to his north Indian clients, Pothuval's links to the corridors of power began more than a decade ago.
In 2010, when Amit Shah was embroiled in a legal fight in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, three acquaintances of Shah approached the Payyanur astrologer with his horoscope.
'I didn't know Amit Shah at the time,' Pothuval recalls.
'My relative, Sudha Menon, recommended me to his family. They had to wait three hours at my home, but I predicted the exact date when he will be relieved from the case. When it came true, it sparked a relationship of trust that has endured to this day.'
The following year, Shah visited him in Payyanur. Pothuval took him to the Payyanur Subramanya Swami temple and the Thaliparamba Rajarajeshwara temple, suggesting offerings such as the 'swarna kuda pooja' and 'swarna vel'.
'He performed all of them wholeheartedly,' Pothuval said.
'From then on, we met several times in Payyanur, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Gujarat. Even last month, during his Kerala visit, he came to see me here.'

Rahul Gandhi expresses concern over SC order on strays

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has expressed his concern over the Supreme Court order that directed the authorities in the National Capital Territory of Delhi to shift all stray dogs to dog shelters . "The SC's directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy. These voiceless souls are not 'problems' to be erased. Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe-without cruelty," Gandhi said in a social media post. India-U.K. FTA offers mutual growth, says Trade Commissioner

The U.K.-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) deal would mutually benefit both nations and promote mobility, innovation, inclusivity, support jobs, boost exports, and strengthen cross-border trade and economic growth, said Harjinder Kang, Trade Commissioner, South Asia, and British Deputy High Commissioner, Western India, at the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) organised roundtable here on Tuesday. 'The vision also aligns with the U.K.'s modern industrial strategy which will help businesses overcome barriers to investment across sectors,' he commented, while addressing BCIC members. Chandru Iyer, British Deputy High Commissioner, Karnataka and Kerala and Deputy Trade Commissioner, South Asia (Investment), further explained how this strategic partnership could unlock new opportunities for bilateral growth and collaboration. 'Indian-owned companies are already thriving in the U.K., driving jobs in high-growth sectors such as aerospace, technology, and advanced manufacturing. Indian businesses are making the most of the U.K.'s ecosystem and the U.K.-India CETA will boost this further,' he observed. He further said he was confident that the new comprehensive strategic partnership would see closer partnerships in defence, education, climate, technology, and innovation. The technology security initiative (TSI), signed last year, would lead to increased collaboration in areas including telecom security which would unlock investment across emerging technologies, critical minerals, AI, biotech advanced materials and semiconductors, he stated. 'We believe that this agreement will have a significant impact on our economies and will support job creation, technology transfer, and innovation. With its potential to double bilateral trade by 2030, this agreement is expected to have a lasting impact on both economies,' said Prashant Gokhale, president, BCIC.

Explainer: What is the new H-1B wage-based selection all about

ETtech The White House has approved a proposal to select H-1B petitions based on wages in a shift from the current norm of using lottery. The rule, if implemented, will likely impact those at entry-level salaries in the US, and force technology firms to make changes in their overseas talent hiring to a Bloomberg report, the approval from the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs came on August 8 and will be released to the public soon. Every year, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approves 85,000 H-1B visas allocated to highly skilled foreign workers through a lottery system, which picks petitions at random. Indians have been one of the largest beneficiaries of the visa. According to the FY24 report from the USCIS, 71% of total H-1B visas, including fresh visas and renewals, issued between October 2023 and September 2024, were to Indian nationals, followed by the Chinese at 12%.The Trump administration now wants to revive the previous proposal by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that would select H-1B petitions based on wages. H-1B wage-based selection In the final rule released in 2021, the USCIS said, 'Modifying the H-1B cap selection process will incentivise employers to offer higher salaries, and/or petition for higher-skilled positions, and establish a more certain path for businesses to achieve personnel needs and remain globally competitive.'This means that those with higher salaries will be prioritised, over entry-level employees. For instance, for the role of a software engineer in San Francisco, between Level 1 with annual compensation of $135,699, and Level 4 at $213,512, the latter would be preferred as per the role. The compensation was based on the current wage data from the US Department of Labor. ImpactThis US government decision is likely to impact hiring for entry-level positions. Immigration experts said the move may also hit diversity in hiring talent as it prioritises wages. Indian IT companies and US technology firms may also have to pay higher wages for their employees to qualify, inflating operating costs and pressuring changes yet. In 2021, the new rule for H-1B saw significant push back and was withdrawn by the then Biden administration. It was also blocked by the federal courts. What is next? Now that the White House has approved the proposal, Gnanamookan Senthurjothi, founder, Visa Code, said the USCIS will release it for public feedback in the federal firm Fragomen in a note said after a period of 30-60 days, the agency will take into consideration the comments and will then publish the final rule with the implementation period. 'There is no set time frame for publication of a final rule, though the process typically takes several months,' the note said.
