Karnataka-specific education policy in the works: CM Siddaramaiah
A commission constituted for this purpose has recommended a two-language policy in school education and that Kannada or the mother tongue be the medium of instruction up to Class 5.
In his address during the 79th Independence Day celebrations here, the chief minister also said the government was upgrading first-grade colleges and polytechnics in the state, and establishing 13 new technical education institutions.
"Recently, the State Education Policy Commission, chaired by Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, submitted its report. For the first time, steps are being taken to frame a comprehensive, Karnataka-specific education policy which will lead to holistic development of our youth," Siddaramaiah said.
The Commission had submitted its report to Siddaramaiah on August 8. It was constituted in October 2023 following the Congress' poll promise to replace the National Education Policy (NEP) of the BJP-led Centre.
This year, the government is setting up 500 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, Siddaramaiah said.
"We are providing nutritious food to 53 lakh children, ragi malt, milk, eggs or bananas on all school days, and a hot midday meal. We have increased honoraria for guest teachers and midday meal staff, prioritised teacher recruitment, upgrading first-grade colleges and polytechnics at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, and are establishing 13 new technical education institutions," he said.
Pointing out that providing skill training and employment opportunities to youth is a top priority for his government, the CM said that under the motto "My Career, My Choice", vocational guidance programmes are being implemented in 150 government schools for students from grades 8 to 12, benefiting 35,000 students so far.
"This will be expanded to train 2.3 lakh students. We are also strengthening and expanding Government Tool Room and Training Centres (GTTCs) and Multi Skill Development Centre (MSDCs) for transforming them into institutions of pride for our state and our youth," he said.
Siddaramaiah said for the social and economic empowerment of women, 'Akka Cafes' run by self-help women groups are being set up across Karnataka.
"In Haveri district, an Akka Cafe is being run by members of the transgender community," he added.

File affidavit in seven days or apologise: ECI ultimatum on Rahul Gandhi's Karnataka vote theft allegations
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday (August 17, 2025) doubled down on its demand that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi submit an affidavit stating his allegations of voter roll manipulations in a Karnataka Assembly constituency. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar also refused the Opposition's demands to publish a machine-readable voter list and to provide CCTV footage of the voting process, claiming that both measures would violate voter privacy. In his first press conference since assuming office, the CEC did not name the Congress leader, but issued him an ultimatum to submit a signed affidavit within seven days or apologise to the nation for his allegations. Lahar Singh petitions ECI on audio clip in which a Congress MLA allegedly speaks on cash distribution to voters
BJP Rajya Sabha member Lahar Singh Siroya has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to investigate an audio clip allegedly featuring Congress MLA for Arsikere K.M. Shivalinge Gowda discussing cash distribution for voters during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Citing his earlier complaint on former Union Minister C.M. Ibrahim's admission of buying 3,000 votes to ensure Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's victory in the 2018 Assembly elections from Badami, Mr. Lahar Singh said: 'These repeated revelations expose the Congress' deep-rooted vote chori culture, even as its leader Rahul Gandhi accuses others of electoral malpractice.' 'Now, there is another audio making news in my State (I have not independently verified the authenticity of the audio). In this clip, Mr. Shivalinge Gowda is heard speaking, apparently to a Congress Rajya Sabha MP, on how much money should be distributed per voter in the Hassan Lok Sabha seat to ensure their candidate's victory. This was in connection with the 2024 Lok Sabha polls,' he said. Taking a dig at Mr. Rahul Gandhi, he said: 'The irony is that Mr. Rahul Gandhi is shouting vote chori unaware that his own partymen are masters in the game. The fact that Mr. Rahul Gandhi makes wild allegations without worrying about what his party and partymen are all about is proof that he is desperately trying to remain relevant in the Indian political landscape.' Mr. Lahar Singh appealed to the ECI to probe the audio clip along with his earlier complaint related to purchase of 3,000 votes.
