Teen sentenced to six years at Henry Gurney school over fatal crash that killed five
KUCHING: A 15-year-old boy was ordered to undergo six years of rehabilitation at the Henry Gurney School for causing the deaths of five individuals in a road crash earlier this year.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan imposed the order until the teen reaches the age of 21, and further fined him RM1,500 or two months imprisonment in default, for driving underage.
The sentence was handed down after the Magistrate's Court received a report from the Social Welfare Department and submissions from deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fillanny Siji.
The teenager, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty on May 14 to two charges under Sections 41(1) and 39(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, and for driving while under the age of 16.
Speaking to reporters, Mohd Fillanny said the prosecution had sought a custodial sentence in light of the loss of five lives, adding that such cases should serve as a deterrent amid the rising number of road accidents in Kuching.
On May 14, the teen's 35-year-old father also pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for permitting his son to drive without proper supervision.
He was fined RM15,000, in default 12 months imprisonment and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service within six months.
On Jan 14, the teenager lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into two cars and two motorcycles along Jalan Stutong Baru.
Four victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital.

Couple killed, their three children injured in road crash in Pekan
KUANTAN: A man and his wife were killed, while their three children were injured when the car they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Batu 8, Lepar, here on Tuesday (June 17) night. Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the crash, which occurred at about 10pm, involved a Proton Wira car carrying the family of five and a lorry. He said initial investigations found that the crash occurred when Jamal Azizul Samat, 44, who was at the wheel of the car, which was heading towards Segamat from Kuantan, was believed to have lost control of the wheel while overtaking another vehicle before entering the opposite lane and colliding with the oncoming lorry. "As a result of the crash, Jamal Azizul and his wife, Lizawati Abdullah, 41, died at the scene due to serious injuries. Their bodies were sent to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA), Kuantan, for a post-mortem," he said in a statement. Mohd Zaidi said the three children, aged six to 17, suffered injuries to the head, face and abdomen, and were sent to the same hospital for treatment. "The lorry driver Logesvaran Kandan, 31, did not suffer any injuries, while his two passengers, aged 24 and 37 respectively, suffered minor injuries," he said. Father, two children hurt in crash at Pulau Indah junction
KUALA LUMPUR: A man and his two children sustained minor injuries following a three-vehicle crash at the Jalan Dato Hormat-Jalan Rahmat intersection in Pulau Indah at 7.16am today. The incident, recorded in a 35-second video that went viral online, involved a motorcycle and two cars. South Klang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ramli Kasa said the motorcyclist had been travelling from Jalan Dato Ahmad Razali to Jalan Dato Harun when a Perodua Myvi failed to stop at the intersection and struck the motorcycle. "As a result of the crash, the motorcyclist was flung onto the bonnet of another vehicle, while both children were thrown onto the road," he said in a statement. The victims were treated for minor injuries at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
