Shocking scenes as Brewers' parking lot is flooded and rain leaks through dome's roof amid severe storms

Daily Mail5 days ago
The New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers managed to play baseball on Sunday, although that was hardly a given considering the flash flooding across Wisconsin this weekend.
Even after Saturday's game, where the retractable roof at American Family Field began leaking amid floods in the parking lot, officials still proceeded with Sunday's matinee.
The Mets may have hoped for a postponement, but instead suffered their 11th loss in their last dozen games as Isaac Collins hit a walk-off home run for the Brewers' eighth straight win.
New York held a 6-5 led after seven innings, but allowed Milwaukee's Joey Ortiz to hit an RBI-single in the eighth to tie the game before Mets closer Edwin Diaz surrendered the walk-off homer in the ninth.
With their loss and Cincinnati's win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, the Mets are now clinging to the final National League Wild Card spot by 1.5 games over the Reds. Milwaukee, meanwhile, improved to an MLB-best 73-44 and hold a 5.5-game edge over the Chicago Cubs in the N.L. Central.
Unlike the baseball game, however, the final day of the Wisconsin State Fair was canceled due to flooding. Organizers of the Wisconsin State Fair said they were scrapping the final day of the 11-day event after rains flooded the fairgrounds in West Allis, which is just outside Milwaukee.

'We are saddened we cannot deliver this final day of the Wisconsin State Fair, but know that this is the best decision with current conditions and the forecast ahead,' organizers said in a statement.
USA Triathlon also canceled its Sprint and Paratriathlon National Championships in Milwaukee, where thousands of athletes were expected to participate
City officials warned residents to avoid driving or walking in the standing waters.
'It remains dangerous,' the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works said in a statement.
On Saturday, strong winds led to the death of one person in eastern Nebraska after a tree fell on a woman´s car. In the state capital of Lincoln, the storms damaged two housing units at the Nebraska State Penitentiary, displacing 387 prisoners, the state Department of Correctional Services said. The agency said all staff and incarcerated individuals were safe and accounted for.
The National Weather Service issued flood watches and warnings for parts of Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska , Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin. After rainfall began on Saturday in some areas forecasters predicted 'repeated rounds of heavy rain,' along with hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes into Monday.
Among the worst hit was the Milwaukee area, where as many as 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rain had fallen in some areas by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service, which also noted river flooding in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. Some motorists left their stranded cars on roads.
Nearly 47,000 customers of We Energies lost power in southeast Wisconsin. In the suburban village of Wauwatosa, an overflowing and fast-moving Menomonee River submerged a popular playground.

Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers down Padres, grab back share of 1st

August 16 - Clayton Kershaw gave up one run over six innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers moved back into a tie for first place in the National League West with San Diego by defeating the visiting Padres 3-2 on Friday. Teoscar Hernandez hit a home run and Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts each drove in a run for the Dodgers, who ended a four-game winning streak. Kershaw (7-2) allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three. He has given up a combined two runs over his last three starts (18 innings), earning a win in each outing. Five Los Angeles relievers combined to give up one run over three innings, with rookie left-hander Jack Dreyer recording the final out for his second save. Ramon Laureano homered for the Padres, who took over sole possession of first place in the division on Wednesday while knocking the Dodgers into second for the first time since April 27. Left-hander Wandy Peralta opened with 1 1/3 scoreless innings for San Diego before right-hander Randy Vasquez (3-6) gave up two runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings. The Padres are still 14-4 since July 26, but they fell to 2-6 against the Dodgers this season. San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Laureano hit a two-out home run to left field, his 18th of the season and third since joining San Diego from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline. The Dodgers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third inning after Michael Conforto, Alex Freeland and Miguel Rojas loaded the bases with singles to open the frame. Ohtani grounded into a forceout for a run, and Betts followed with a sacrifice fly. Hernandez added an insurance run in the seventh on a one-out home run to right-center field, his 19th, off Jeremiah Estrada. It was the first home run Estrada allowed in 23 appearances after giving one up to the Dodgers' Will Smith on June 17. The Padres loaded the bases in the eighth against left-hander Alex Vesia after both Jose Iglesias and Jake Cronenworth were hit by pitches and Fernando Tatis Jr. drew a one-out walk. Luis Arraez's sacrifice fly closed the gap 3-2, but Blake Treinen replaced Vesia and got Manny Machado to hit an inning-ending popout. --Field Level Media

Tigers top Twins for second shutout in three games

August 16 - Dillon Dingler drove in three runs, Charlie Morton pitched six strong innings and the Detroit Tigers blanked the Minnesota Twins 7-0 on Friday in Minneapolis. Javier Baez had two hits and drove in two runs for the Tigers, who have won five of their last six games. Spencer Torkelson reached base three times and scored two runs. Morton (8-10) gave up two hits and walked three while striking out five in his third start since Detroit acquired him from Baltimore at the trade deadline. Tommy Kahnle, Brant Hurter and Bailey Horn each tossed an inning of relief to complete the Tigers' second shutout in the past three games. Minnesota starter Pierson Ohl (0-3) gave up seven runs, three earned, and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings. He walked two and fanned one as the Twins fell for the fourth time in five games. An error and a prolonged plate appearance fueled the Tigers' five-run first inning. Colt Keith and Gleyber Torres had back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Kerry Carpenter then hit a bouncer to second baseman Luke Keaschall, who booted the ball as Keith scored. After a flyout, Torkelson drew a 12-pitch walk. Ohl recorded a strikeout before Dingler blooped a single to center, bringing home two runs. Zach McKinstry followed with an RBI single and Baez ripped a double down the third base line, knocking in Dingler. McKinstry was thrown out at the plate on the same play. Detroit made it 7-0 in the third. Torkelson led off with a single and Wenceel Perez drew a walk. Dingler then smacked a double off the left field wall, bringing home Torkelson. After Jose Urena replaced Ohl, Perez scored on Baez's sacrifice fly. Morton walked two batters in the first and gave up a leadoff double in the second. He allowed another walk and hit a batter in the fourth, but each time he left the runners stranded. Keaschall had a one-out single in the sixth but was erased on a Matt Wallner double-play ball, which wound up being Morton's last pitch of the night. --Field Level Media

Rybakina upsets Sabalenka to reach Cincinnati Open semis, Alcaraz through

Aug 15 (Reuters) - Elena Rybakina powered into her first Cincinnati Open semi-final after stunning defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-1 6-4 on Friday, while five-times Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz recovered from a second-set blip to beat Andrey Rublev. The Kazakh ninth seed delivered a fine performance to secure her seventh career win over a top-ranked player, setting up a blockbuster last-four clash with six-times major winner Iga Swiatek in a showdown of Wimbledon champions. Rybakina fired 11 aces throughout the match, earning an impressive 81% of points on her first serve, while saving all five break points she faced as she secured her fifth win over Belarusian Sabalenka in 12 meetings. "I'm happy with the serve. It was the key," former world number three Rybakina said. "We're both big hitters. Today I served really well. If Aryna serves well, it's completely different. Hopefully I continue like this." Earlier, Swiatek advanced to her first WTA 1000 semi-final in 15 months after beating Russian 28th seed Anna Kalinskaya 6-3 6-4. Kalinskaya, who had defeated Swiatek in their only previous meeting, put up a spirited fight by saving four match points, before the Polish third seed converted her fifth opportunity on serve to seal the victory. "I just played my game," Swiatek said. "For sure, it wasn't easy. Just happy I was solid and had the intensity to apply pressure." Russian Veronika Kudermetova carved out a comfortable 6-1 6-2 victory over Varvara Gracheva to reach the semis of Cincinnati for the first time. Kudermetova appears to be back to the form that once carried her into the top-10 as she earned her first WTA 1000 last-four spot since 2023. She will next face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who rallied from a set down to shock twice Grand Slam winner Coco Gauff 2-6 6-4 6-3. "I tried to fight every point and it worked. I'm really happy. Thank you for cheering for me ... because we are in the States ... Coco is from here," Paolini, the French Open and Wimbledon runner-up last year, said. In the men's draw, Spanish second seed Alcaraz battled to a 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory over Russian ninth seed Rublev to reach the semi-finals. The 22-year-old Alcaraz was far from his best, committing 15 unforced errors and three double faults in the decider, but capitalising on his lone match point, courtesy of a Rublev double fault, to secure his 15th consecutive Masters 1000 win. "Playing someone like Andrey, when you lose focus on two or three points, it can cost you the set or the match. I just stayed strong mentally and that's what I'm most proud of," Alcaraz said. "It's just accepting the moment, accepting that I am playing a third set, that it's going to be a really tough battle, and I love that." Alcaraz, winner of 37 of his last 39 matches, advanced to his 12th Masters 1000 semi-final, equalling the mark of world number one Jannik Sinner, who faces French qualifier Terence Atmane in the other semi-final. Next up for Alcaraz is third seed Alexander Zverev, who knocked out Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton with a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 win. "I came out today and probably felt the best I've felt in a few months. Was feeling the ball incredibly well from both sides," Zverev, who won the Cincinnati title in 2021, said. But the German struggled physically and called for the doctor in the second set. "In the first set I started feeling not so great and it got progressively worse. But I'm in the semi-finals and I'll do everything I can to be 100% tomorrow."
