Restaurant review: CHAR x Around The Block

What's On16-07-2025
Located inside Nad Al Sheba Mall, this unique grill-focused café offers smoke-licked meats, inventive cold plates, and exclusive non-alcoholic drinks like the Coal Cola and Yuzu Kick. From morning coffee to a low-lit grill bar by night, CHAR delivers a thoughtful, flavour-packed experience that's refreshingly different. The Spot
Located inside Nad Al Sheba Mall, CHAR is the latest flame-fired concept from the team behind Around The Block, a homegrown Emirati café brand known for switching things up with every new venture. It's the laid-back coffee haunt you know and love; the grill is lit, the lights are dimmed, and CHAR takes over. Expect bold, char-driven flavours, smoke-licked meats, and cold plates that strike a balance between rich and refreshing. The Vibe
This isn't a high-speed, high-energy kind of place. Instead, CHAR leans into a more relaxed rhythm. It's rather casual, with open flames visible from your seat and a soundtrack that keeps things mellow. The setting evolves throughout the day from a morning coffee shop to low-lit grill bar and the transformation works. The Food and Drinks
The food is where CHAR hits its stride. The chicken shawarma, assembled live in front of you, is a standout. Rich, juicy, and wrapped with house pickles for that ideal balance of punch and tang. The wagyu tenderloin comes bathed in a zaatar truffle butter that elevates it to indulgent perfection. And the Moroccan bread, pillowy and heavy on parmesan, makes for an excellent starter (if you're into cheese). Don't miss the street corn, which brings a good amount of kick and umami thanks to generous parmesan and spice.
To drink? The Coal Cola is CHAR's take on a cleaner, fresher cola, and the Yuzu Kick feels like ginger ale's sharper, cooler cousin. Both are non-alcoholic and exclusive to the venue. Refreshing, surprising, and worth ordering twice, the coffee is a must try, too. The Service
The team is friendly but very laid-back, so don't expect fine-dining polish. The staff move at a relaxed pace, and their casual approach sets the tone across the space and suits a mellow evening.
Something to note: the kitchen closes for an hour around 5pm to prep for dinner service, so time your visit accordingly. What to Order
• Moroccan bread• Street corn• Chicken shawarma • Wagyu tenderloin
• Yuzu Kick and homemade Coal Cola What's On the Bill
Expect to spend around Dhs350 to Dhs450 for two, depending on how many plates and drinks you try. The value is in the flavour and originality. The Final Say
What's On Verdict: Thoughtful, smoky, and refreshingly different. CHAR has all the ingredients to become a cult favourite, but go with patience and a big appetite.

Global events and local programmes take centre stage at Dubai Culture

Late last month, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) wrapped up its participation in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) sub-network meeting in Saint-Étienne, France; it was a forum designed to deepen cooperation among cities that integrate creativity into urban development. The gathering provided an opportunity to share ideas and best practices that strengthen cultural and creative industries. The engagement reflected Dubai Culture's ongoing commitment to solidify Dubai's leadership and position on the international map as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity and a thriving hub for talent. During the meeting, Khulood Khoory, Director of the Projects and Events Department at Dubai Culture, made a presentation on best practices on resource and material innovation. It explored how Dubai is harnessing local biomass from palm trees to give form and shape to tomorrow's materials. Khulood highlighted the country's progress in finding new uses for what otherwise might be removed as waste, transforming regional resources such as palm trees and date seeds into bioplastics, plywood alternatives, and eco-friendly veneers for interiors. On the sidelines of the UCCN Design sub-network meeting, Dubai Culture also took part in the 13th edition of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne (till July 6) under the theme 'Ressource(s), présager demain' (Resources, anticipating tomorrow). Tibrah by Emirati designer Reema AlMheiri. Among the showcased works on the occasion was 'Ramel' by Emirati designer Kholoud Sharafi, a series composed of a blend of sand from the UAE and pieces were inspired by the shifting dunes of the desert and explored the versatility of sand by using this abundant yet often overlooked element, to forge a link between the natural landscape and creativity. Another work on display was 'Tibrah' by Emirati product designer and architect Reema AlMheiri, which drew on the local community's relationship with the sea, creating biodegradable material from fish scales as a viable alternative to synthetics. (The term 'Tibrah' refers to oyster bed sites, an integral factor in the UAE's maritime heritage). Additionally, Dubai Culture participated in the first Covilhã International Design Triennial, organised by the Municipality of Covilhã in Portugal as a flagship initiative within the UNESCO Creative Cities of Design Action Plan, in partnership with Ideias Emergentes (till June 21). The event spotlighted bioregional design, local culture, sustainability, and innovation. The exhibition included 'Palm Repose', a bench by Emirati architectural photographer Majid Al Bastaki, inspired by scenes of Emirati farmers resting amidst palm groves. Dubai was designated as the first Creative City of Design in the Middle East by UNESCO in 2017. Ramel by Emirati designer Kholoud Sharafi. Dubai Culture also announced the launch of the second edition of the Talent Atelier programme, organised in collaboration with L'ÉCOLE Middle East, School of Jewelry Arts, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. The first phase of the programme (till July 11), featured a series of interactive workshops hosted at L'ÉCOLE Middle East's campus in Dubai Design District (d3). The sessions introduced participating designers Kamla Al Olama, Sara Al Khayyal, Noora Al Shamsi, Hessa Al Abdulla, Hind Janahi and Andreea Andres, to the three core pillars of the programme, namely, art history, jewellery-making craftsmanship, and gemology. The hands-on training was designed to enhance their design capabilities, equip them with practical craftsmanship skills, and support them in translating their creative visions into preliminary design sketches and concepts. The second phase of the programme takes place in Paris from September 1 to 5, where the selected designers have the opportunity to take part in L'ÉCOLE's educational programme at its Paris campus, located on the Grands Boulevards at the iconic Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau. UAE Eid Al Etihad 2025 plans revealed: Fireworks, drone shows and a long weekend await

As the UAE prepares to mark its 54th National Day, the excitement is palpable. This year, the occasion—proudly known as Eid Al Etihad (Festival of the Union)—promises to be bigger, bolder, and more dazzling than ever. From breathtaking fireworks to cutting-edge drone displays, Abu Dhabi is set to come alive with a fusion of heritage, technology, and pure spectacle. Every year on December 2, the UAE commemorates the historic unification of the seven emirates in 1971. But this isn't just a public holiday—it's a nationwide celebration of Emirati pride, ambition, and the diverse communities that call the UAE home. This year, residents can look forward to a four-day weekend, with December 2 and 3 officially designated as public holidays. And if the holiday begins on December 1, there's even a chance of a five-day break, making it the perfect opportunity for a staycation or a quick getaway. What's in store for Eid Al Etihad 2025? While the full lineup is still under wraps, past celebrations offer a glimpse of what to expect. The main event, taking place on Tuesday, December 2, will be held at a yet-to-be-revealed iconic location—much like last year's stunning celebration at Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, which showcased the UAE's heritage and futuristic vision. Highlights to Look Forward To: Fireworks Extravaganza: The skies over Abu Dhabi will illuminate in the national colors, with spectacular displays expected at Yas Island, the Corniche, and other key location. Drone Shows: A staple of UAE National Day, these synchronized aerial performances will likely feature even more advanced storytelling and visuals. Cultural Performances & Parades: From traditional dances to immersive heritage showcases, free public events will bring the streets of Abu Dhabi to life. Star-Studded Concerts: Previous years have featured both local and international artists. Exclusive Shopping & Dining Deals: Major discounts are expected across malls, hotels, and restaurants, particularly in hotspots like Yas Bay, Saadiyat Island, and The Galleria. Traffic Fine Discounts & Free Parking: Following last year's 50% reduction on fines in some emirates, could we see a repeat? Plus, free public parking in Abu Dhabi is highly anticipated. How to Make the Most of the Holiday With December 2 and 3 as official days off, strategic annual leave could turn this into a **nine-day break** (if taken from **December 1 to December 9**). Whether it's a luxury staycation, a desert retreat, or a road trip across the Emirates, the long weekend is the perfect time to unwind and celebrate. A Month-Long Celebration of Unity Eid Al Etihad isn't just a one-day affair—it's a month-long tribute to the UAE's journey. Buildings will be adorned in the national colors, Emirati music will fill the air, and communities will come together in a vibrant display of unity. – For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and Instagram Images: Instagram & Feature Image: Instagram @queenrania
