Anwar, Hun Manet discuss latest Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire developments
In a statement via Facebook today, Anwar said the discussion held over the phone also touched on the role of Malaysia-led Interim Observer Team (IOT) which has been closely monitoring the border areas of both neighbouring countries.
"We also discuss further on measures that could be taken to enhance the effectiveness of its operations," the statement read.
It was previously reported that, Armed Forces Chief Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the IOT plays a key role in investigating the transparency of the ceasefire along the Thailand-Cambodia border.
He also said the team has received reports from both countries of several ceasefire violations and that it will investigate the reports.
Last month, Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid the ongoing border conflict, withAnwar serving as host and Asean Chair.

He also noted that as the Madani government embarks on the 13th Malaysia Plan, fiscal space must be optimised to deliver public investments that materially transform the economy (Raise the Ceiling) and improve the rakyat's quality of life (Raise the Floor). 'The Madani government remains committed to pursuing fiscal sustainability while ensuring that growth momentum is preserved, particularly in light of current global developments. 'The Malaysian economy has continued to demonstrate resilience, expanding by 4.4% in the first half of 2025, while the unemployment rate eased to a decade low of 3%. In 2025, Malaysia's economy is expected to grow between 4% and 4.8%, underpinned by strong domestic demand, moderate inflation, and a stable labour market,' he said in a statement yesterday. Anwar noted these outcomes were realised in tandem with the government's fiscal consolidation efforts, with the successful reduction of the fiscal deficit from 5.5% of gross domestic product in 2022 to 4.1% in 2024. 'The FPC meeting today reaffirmed the government's commitment to reducing the 3.8% fiscal deficit target for 2025 and subsequently achieving a deficit of 3% or below in the medium term,' he added.

Roundup: Cambodian scholars laud Cambodia-China economic, trade cooperation
PHNOM PENH, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian officials and scholars on Tuesday lauded Cambodia-China economic and trade cooperation and a bilateral free trade agreement, saying that they have offered tremendous mutual benefit and win-win situation. They made the remarks during a seminar on Cambodia-China economic and trade cooperation 2025. Kao Muy Thong, deputy secretary general of the Council for Agriculture and Rural Development of Cambodia, said China is Cambodia's top investor, trading partner and major source of tourists, adding that Chinese investment and tourists have significantly contributed to the kingdom's socio-economic development and poverty alleviation. He said the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA), which entered into force in 2022, has provided greater access of made-in-Cambodia products to the Chinese market. "Under the CCFTA, Cambodia can export more than 340 categories of products to China, with 95 percent of them being agricultural goods with zero-percent tariffs," he said. "The remaining 5 percent, which are machinery and vehicles, will see tariffs reduced to zero percent within 10 years." He said 2025, which is the Cambodia-China Year of Tourism, has provided a good opportunity for both countries to further expand people-to-people exchanges and trade relations for mutual benefit. Heang Sotheara, an advisor to Cambodia's Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said China has played a critical role in Cambodia's economic growth. Sotheara said Chinese investors should focus on non-garment manufacturing sectors such as food and beverage, agro-industry, and agriculture, adding that these sectors have potential for medium- and long-term investment. Neak Chandarith, director of the Cambodia 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Research Center of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, said the CCFTA has contributed to rising Cambodian exports to China and improved tariff preferences. "For the CCFTA to deliver broad-based benefits, Cambodia must invest in technical capacity, accelerate protocol negotiations, and promote higher-value exports," he said. Chandarith said Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) mega-projects such as the Sihanoukville Special Economy Zone, Phnom Penh Sihanoukville Expressway, Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, and hydropower plants are vivid examples of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. "These BRI flagship projects have laid a solid foundation for Cambodia's development of the economy, trade, manufacturing industry, connectivity infrastructure, logistics and tourism as well as for attracting more foreign direct investment to the kingdom," he said. "In sum, broader Cambodia-China economic and trade cooperation will provide greater mutual benefit and win-win situation, injecting more vigorous impetus into building an all-weather Cambodia-China community with a shared future in the new era," Chandarith added.

More Republican governors send National Guard to Washington, backing Trump

REUTERS/Ken Cedeno (Reuters) -Hundreds of additional National Guard troops are headed to Washington, D.C., from half a dozen Republican-led states, bolstering President Donald Trump's aggressive move to flood the city with soldiers and federal agents in what he says is an effort to fight violent crime. The Republican governors of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee agreed to deploy troops to Washington, days after the Republican governors of West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio also did so at the Trump administration's request. Trump has characterized Washington as overrun with violence and homelessness, a description local officials have rejected. Federal and city statistics show violent crime rates have dropped sharply since a spike in 2023, though the city's murder rate remains higher than most other big U.S. cities. Trump announced on August 11 he had ordered 800 Guard troops to the city and temporarily taken control of the city's police department, an extraordinary exercise of presidential power over the U.S. capital. The federal government also dispatched agents from numerous agencies, including the FBI, to patrol the city's streets. Following a legal challenge filed by the city's attorney general, the administration negotiated a deal with Mayor Muriel Bowser to keep Police Chief Pamela Smith in charge of the department's operations. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he had approved the deployment of about 135 Guard soldiers to Washington, while Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said he had ordered 200 soldiers to the capital. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has also deployed 160 Guard troops to the city, according to local media reports. "Crime is out of control there, and it's clear something must be done to combat it," Reeves said in a statement. In total, the six Republican states have announced deployments of more than 1,100 Guard troops to Washington. TESTING LIMITS Guard soldiers, most of whom have civilian jobs and serve part-time, often respond to natural disasters and other emergencies. While the National Guard in Washington reports to the president, governors typically control the Guard in their own states. Trump tested that authority in June, when he ordered thousands of National Guard troops and active-duty Marines into Los Angeles as protests over his administration's immigration raids flared up. The deployment came despite opposition from California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. A federal judge in San Francisco is weighing whether Trump's actions in Los Angeles were illegal, after California sued the administration. Federal law generally forbids the use of the military in law enforcement, but there are exceptions, including for National Guard troops that are under state command, such as California's. In 2020, during Trump's first administration, the White House requested Guard troops from numerous states to help restore order in Washington in the wake of racial justice protests. Then-Attorney General Bill Barr said the National Guard remained under state command and was used to protect federal buildings and personnel. Even so, Barr said their duties would include controlling crowds, temporarily detaining people, and conducting "cursory" searches, activities usually associated with police. Critics said the 2020 experience in Washington potentially opened the way for the president to use armed troops against civilians. Trump has suggested he could target additional Democrat-led cities, though he would likely face more legal obstacles than in Washington, where the federal government still has broad oversight under the law. A White House official said on Tuesday that Guard troops in Washington may carry arms but were not making arrests. Instead, the soldiers are protecting federal property and providing "a safe environment for law enforcement officers to make arrests." Some 465 arrests have been made in the 12 days since the Trump administration's operations began, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote on X on Tuesday, an average of 39 arrests a day. The city's Metropolitan Police Department arrested an average of 61 adults and juveniles per day in 2024, according to city statistics.
