Thousands battle Greece fires as heatwave bakes Europe - International

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
Greece on Wednesday battled to contain more than 20 wildfires including one menacing its third-largest city Patras as a heatwave stoked blazes and forced the evacuation of thousands in southern Europe.
Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, the Balkans and Britain have this week wilted in high temperatures that fuel wildfires and which scientists say human-induced climate change is intensifying.
Since dawn on Wednesday, 4,850 firefighters and 33 planes were mobilised across Greece on what promised to be "a very difficult day", fire service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said.
A fire near the ancient Mycenaean archaeological site of Voudeni, just seven kilometres (four miles) from Patras, threatened forested zones and homes, and the area was covered by a thick cloud of smoke, an AFP journalist reported.
Fierce wind "is hampering the task of water bombers, and is making collecting water at sea more difficult", the president of the firefighter officers' union, Kostas Tsigkas, told public broadcaster ERT.
In the western Achaia region in the Peloponnese, to which the coastal city of Patras belongs, around 20 villages were evacuated on Tuesday.
Other fronts were burning on the popular tourist island of Zante and the Aegean island of Chios, scarred by a huge wildfire in June that ravaged more than 4,000 hectares.
The Greek coastguard said it had helped evacuate nearly 80 people from Chios and near Patras.
The national ambulance service reported 52 hospitalisations from Achaia, Chios and the western town of Preveza, including "a small number of firefighters", mostly for respiratory problems and minor burns.
Temperatures are due to come close to 40C in parts of western Greece on Wednesday, including the northwest Peloponnese, national weather service EMY forecast.
After Greece requested four water bombers from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to bolster its resources, leftist opposition party Syriza criticised the conservative government's preparation for the fires that hit every year.
Greece needed "a bold redistribution of resources in favour of civil protection", an "emphasis on prevention", better coordination and new technologies in its civil protection system, Syriza said.
'Worst breeding ground'
At the other end of the Mediterranean, wildfires continued to dominate the news in Spain, where cooler temperatures and greater humidity were expected to help control blazes in which two people have died.
Authorities in the northwestern region of Castile and Leon, where flames have threatened a world heritage Roman mining site, said almost 6,000 people from 26 localities had been evacuated from their homes.
Bushy undergrowth and searing temperatures that have baked Spain for almost two weeks had created "the worst possible breeding ground for this situation", Castile and Leon's civil protection head Irene Cortes said.
A total of 199 wildfires have scorched nearly 98,784 hectares across Spain this year, more than double the area burned during the same period in 2024.
Neighbouring Portugal deployed more than 1,800 firefighters and around 20 aircraft against five major blazes, with efforts focused on a blaze in the central municipality of Trancoso that has raged since Saturday.
Strong gusts of wind had rekindled flames overnight and threatened nearby villages, where television images showed locals volunteering to help the firefighters under a thick cloud of smoke.
"It's scary... but we are always ready to help each other," a mask-wearing farmer told Sic Noticias television, holding a spade in his hand.
Italian firefighters had extinguished a blaze that burned for five days on the famed Mount Vesuvius and spewed plumes of smoke over the Naples area.
In Britain, temperatures were expected to peak at 34C in the country's fourth heatwave of the summer.
The UK Health Security Agency warned of "significant impacts" on health and social care services for the parts of central and southeastern England where the harshest heat was forecast.

Euronews: Mass Evacuations in Southern Europe Amid Escalating Wildfires

Rana Atef Thousands of Europeans have been displaced as record-breaking heatwaves fueled devastating wildfires across southern Europe, prompting the European Commission to deliver an unprecedented level of emergency aid. According to Euronews, the Commission revealed that requests for wildfire assistance this week alone have already matched the total number recorded throughout 2024. Mass evacuations were ordered in Greece, Spain, and Portugal as fast-moving blazes threatened towns and villages. In the coastal city of Patras, Greek firefighters battled flames tearing through pine forests and olive groves, struggling to save homes and farmland. Fire Department spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said the fire risk remains 'extremely high' nationwide, adding that at least 15 firefighters have been hospitalized with burns, smoke inhalation, or exhaustion. Wind-driven fires have already destroyed homes and businesses, while firefighting aircraft raced between blazes on the western mainland, Patras, and the island of Zakynthos. Resources across southern Europe remain under severe pressure, with Athens even dispatching reinforcements to neighboring Albania, where dozens of wildfires rage. Officials there confirmed the death of an elderly man south of Tirana. Spain has declared this wildfire season catastrophic. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences after a volunteer firefighter was killed in Castilla y León, north of Madrid, where more than 8,000 residents from 30 towns were ordered to evacuate. Authorities reported that flames scorched some 38,000 hectares between Zamora and León, leaving one person dead and at least 12 injured. Sánchez warned on social media that the wildfire situation remains 'critical' and urged extra caution. Evacuation shelters across central Spain have reached capacity, forcing some families to sleep outside. Fires also advanced north into rural areas, while Valencia declared a Level 2 emergency after a lightning strike ignited new blazes. Meanwhile, seven fires continue to burn in Ourense, northwestern Spain. In Portugal, thousands of firefighters remain on the frontlines after weeks of relentless flames. The town of Arganil is among the worst-hit, where more than 900 firefighters are battling the spread, alongside other major blazes in Sátão, Sernancelhe, and Trancoso. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa warned that worsening weather conditions could further intensify the crisis. Despite record losses of forested land compared to last year, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has so far held back from activating international aid mechanisms, though he admitted the option remains on the table. The European Union has already begun mobilizing support for the hardest-hit regions, including non-member states. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed in a post on X: 'We are rallying support for Greece following its request for assistance, while pre-positioned firefighters are already helping in Spain.' read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

Egypt Sees Final Day of Heatwave on Friday, Cairo 38°C

Yara Sameh The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) predicts that the country will continue experiencing a rise in temperature on Friday. Extremely hot and humid weather will prevail during the day nationwide. The weather will seem hotter due to the high humidity levels, which will push up the heat index 2-4 degrees. The country will also witness mist on agricultural and highway roads from the north of the country to Cairo. Wind will occur occasionally across the country. Light to moderate rainfall, sometimes thunderous, is also predicted to hit intermittently in Halayeb, Shalateen, and the far south of Upper Egypt. Furthermore, maritime navigation is also expected to be disrupted in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Suez, with winds averaging 40 to 60 km/h and waves ranging between 2:3 meters. The Mediterranean Sea will experience moderate waves ranging between 1.75 and 2.25 meters in height with northwest surface winds. Hot and humid weather is also expected to prevail in Egypt at night and in the early hours. The predicted temperatures for the following cities are 38°C in Cairo, 32°C in Alexandria, 32°C in Marsa Matruh, 45°C in Sohag, 46°C in Qena, and 49°C in Aswan. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

Germany Spends €80 Mln on Border Controls

Israa Farhan Germany has spent €80.5 million on land border control operations between mid-September 2024 and the end of June 2025, according to figures released by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The measures, initially introduced as a temporary exception to the Schengen Area's free movement rules, have since been repeatedly extended. The expenditure covers a wide range of costs, including €24 to €29.1 million per quarter for deploying federal police along internal borders. Between April and June 2025 alone, the government paid €8 million for meals and hotel accommodation for police officers, almost €3 million in allowances for working unsociable hours, €2.6 million for administrative and operational resources, and around €2 million for running border checkpoints. Overtime pay represented the largest single expense, amounting to €37.9 million during the period from September 2024 to June 2025. Former Interior Minister Nancy Faeser first imposed the land border checks in September 2024, citing the need to curb irregular migration and combat cross-border crime. Her successor, Alexander Dobrindt, intensified these measures upon taking office in May 2025, announcing further extensions beyond September this year and introducing a policy of turning away asylum seekers directly at the border. Between 8 May and 4 August 2025, federal police refused entry to 493 people who had expressed an intention to seek asylum in Germany. Critics, including opposition figures, have condemned the policy as unlawful and harmful to both travelers and asylum seekers. They argue that it creates traffic congestion in border regions, adds unnecessary burdens for regular cross-border commuters, and results in excessively high costs for the federal government. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
