Cowboys coordinator Matt Eberflus does this one thing extremely well

USA Today22-06-2025
Matt Eberflus has earned the moniker of 'Linebacker whisperer' in his time as a position guru, defensive coordinator, and head coach in the NFL. Regardless of whether the player was drafted and developed by Eberflus, a veteran with success elsewhere, or a player he had to take to the next level, linebackers elevate while under his stewardship.
As a linebacker coach and defensive coordinator, he helped develop Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, Anthony Hitchens, Damien Wilson, Jaylon Smith, Bobby Okereke, and Shaquille Leonard. Lee was drafted the season before Eberflus became the linebacker coach at Dallas and developed into an all-time great when healthy. In their first season together, Lee had 104 tackles, 10 for a loss, four interceptions, and seven pass breakups. He was fifth in the 2016 voting for Defensive Player of the Year and had his only first-team All-Pro season.
Carter was a starter under Eberflus for three seasons. He had a season with 96 tackles, two sacks, three pass breakups, and five tackles for a loss. He had five interceptions and eight pass breakups in another season with Eberflus. Without Eberflus, he never started more than three games or recorded 50 tackles. Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson were fourth-round picks who Eberflus developed into starters all four years of their rookie contracts, and they each went on to start and win a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. Jaylon Smith had two seasons with Eberflus, coming off a career-threatening injury. He was fifth in Comeback Player of the Year voting in 2017 and later developed into a Pro Bowler.
As a defensive coordinator for the Colts, Eberflus oversaw the drafting and development of both Leonard and Okereke.
Okereke became a linebacker who averaged over 120 tackles a season and has been in the top 10 in solo tackles three times in six seasons. Leonard developed into a star. He started 58 games and averaged 134.5 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss, nearly three interceptions, 7.5 pass breakups, over four forced fumbles, and almost four sacks. He was a three-time All-Pro and won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
Dallas is very young at linebacker, with Marist Liufau, DeMarvion Overshown, and Shemar James having a season or less of experience on the field. Veterans Kenneth Murray, Jack Sanborn, and Damone Clark will also improve under his tutelage.
There have also been journeyman linebackers who saw significant upticks while playing for Eberflus.
David Bowens had one season as a full-time starter in 10 years. He was a defensive end who transitioned to linebacker when Eberflus took over as the position coach in Cleveland. Bowens went from a high of 43 tackles to 71 and had a career-high 12 QB hits in 15 starts.
In the same 2009 season, Matt Roth played four games without a start for the Miami Dolphins before being released. He was claimed off waivers by the Browns, where he started the final six games with Eberflus as linebackers coach. The following year, he started all 16 games, and in that 22-game span, he accumulated 114 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 12 tackles for a loss.
Anthony Spencer became a significant impact player and a Pro-Bowler in his second year working with Eberflus. He nearly doubled his highest sack total with 11 and had his highest tackles for a loss, too. His personal-best in tackles went from 67 to 95, and he did it in only 14 starts.
Rolando McClain won Comeback Player of the Year in 2014 with Eberflus after missing seven games in 2012 and the entire 2013 season.
All in all, Eberflus' influence should rear it's head pretty quickly with his new troops in Dallas.

Fantasy Football Video: Comparison to Jahmyr Gibbs has us thinking top-15 upside for rookie TreVeyon Henderson

The New England Patriots are looking to bust out of a rebuild that has been taking place since Tom Brady exited the franchise. Offense has been a big emphasis over the past few drafts with the Patriots looking like they've found a starting QB in Drake Maye. Might that again translate to this year with RB TreVeyon Henderson, who was selected in the second round in 2025? [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Going into fantasy football draft season, Henderson is getting plenty of hype as a rookie sleeper. We saw flashes of what could be from Henderson when he housed a kick return 100 yards for a TD in Week 1 of preseason. He was also plenty active in the passing game for New England, which is expected to rotate the rookie in with Rhamondre Stevenson in the backfield. Matt Harmon and Justin Boone discussed the situation on The Fantasy Forecast Podcast. Boone, who is a diehard Bills guy, has always refused to draft Patriots players in fantasy. This season has him rethinking his previous declaration. Boone believes that Henderson's pass-catching ability could make him a great safety valve for Maye. That type of usage reminds the Yahoo analyst of Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs in his rookie season, when he finished as the RB11 despite sharing the backfield with David Montgomery. Right now, Henderson is being drafted on Yahoo around the 75th pick on average, good for RB26 overall. Boone could see him finishing inside the top 15 at the position if all goes well and Henderson has a solid role as the passing-down back.

Countdown to Kickoff: Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the Saints Player of Day 23

Edwards-Helaire is looking to revive his once-promising career In 23 days, the New Orleans Saints will kick off their 2025 regular season when they host the Arizona Cardinals. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire wears No. 23 for New Orleans currently, looking for his second straight year with the squad. A local Louisiana product, Edwards-Helaire is our Saints Player of the Day. Now trying to revive his once-promising career with his hometown team, here's a closer look at Edwards-Helaire's background. A four-star recruit at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge where he starred for four years, Louisiana State University kept Edwards-Helaire close to home. He'd see light action as a true freshman before earning a bigger role in 2018 with 658 rushing yards. During the Tigers historic national championship season of 2019, Edwards-Helaire led the squad with 1,414 yards rushing and topped the SEC with 16 rushing scores. He also added an impressive 55 receptions for 453 yards that year while bringing in 1st Team All-SEC honors. Edwards-Helaire declared for the NFL draft in 2020, where the Kansas City Chiefs made him the first running back selected with the final choice of the first round. As a rookie, Edwards-Helaire led the Chiefs with 803 rushing yards. He'd add 36 catches for 297 yards for a Kansas City team that advanced to Super Bowl LV. A knee injury caused Edwards-Helaire to miss seven outings in 2021, though his 517 yards on the ground were still second on the team. In 2022, he dealt with more injuries that limited him to 10 contests. Kansas City went on to win Super Bowl LVII that season, but with Edwards-Helaire managing just 453 total yards and playing a secondary role in the backfield to Isaiah Pacheco. He remained behind Pacheco in 2023, picking up just 411 scrimmage yards in 15 games as the Chiefs won back-to-back Super Bowl titles. Personal off-field issues caused Edwards-Helaire to start the 2024 campaign on the non-football injury list (NFI). He was activated by the Chiefs in October, but released in December without appearing in a game. New Orleans quickly signed Edwards-Helaire, playing him in the final two games of the season. In those contests, he rushed for 46 yards and added 24 more with 3 catches. He enters the 2025 season with 1,891 career rushing yards, with an average of 4.2 per carry, along with 92 receptions for 789 yards and 19 total touchdowns. At only 26, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is now trying to revive his career after a very promising start. The Saints are hoping that he'll provide a legitimate backfield complement to Alvin Kamara, something their offense has lacked for some time. Edwards-Helaire is a capable receiver out of the backfield and excellent on blitz pickup assignments, but must show that he can consistently be productive as a runner between the tackles. If he can, he might hold off competition from Cam Akers, Devin Neal, and Marcus Yarns to push Kendre Miller as the team's number two back.

'Chiefs Kingdom' had best Taylor Swift reactions from Travis Kelce teammates

A behind-the-scenes look at the Kansas City Chiefs premiered this week with the first episode of the ESPN docuseries "Chiefs Kingdom" debuting on Thursday. The six-episode series is centered around last season's Super Bowl run by the Chiefs, with a focus on the team's history and head coach Andy Reid. But recent Chiefs content also means we get more insight into tight end Travis Kelce and his then-new relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. The 14-time Grammy winner started dating Kelce in the summer of 2023, with the singer attending several home and some away games for Kansas City over the last two seasons. Swift, who just broke the internet with her 2-hour podcast with Kelce and his brother Jason on New Heights this week, garnered attention when she went to her first Chiefs game in September of 2023. Interviews with defensive tackle Chris Jones and quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the series discussed exactly that moment that they realized Kelce did, in fact, get Swift to come to a game. "Taylor Swift's here? For real? With Travis? Oh my god!" Jones said during an interview in the episode. "We were like, 'Oh my god, Travis pulled Taylor Swift!'" You can watch all six episodes of "Chiefs Kingdom" now on the ESPN app through ESPN+.
