New Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge to open Thursday, expect traffic delays: Cops

Yahoo02-08-2025
RUMSON ― The new Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge over the Shrewsbury River is to officially open Thursday afternoon, according to a public alert sent from borough police.
Heavy traffic delays are expected between noon and 6 p.m. on July 31, police said.
It's been four years since officials broke ground on the $130 million project to replace the span, which as its name implies, connects the boroughs of Sea Bright and Rumson.

The old bridge was built in 1950 and had approached the end of its lifespan, with structural and functional limitations that did not meet modern design standards, according to Monmouth County officials, who are responsible for the structure.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected in the area, with normal traffic conditions re expected between 3.15pm and 3.30pm. Essex Police have confirmed no one has been injured in the fire and no arrests have been made. Giants' Jaxson Dart goes viral as New Jersey toll options leave rookie confused

New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was born in Utah and played college football at USC and Ole Miss before he decided to turn pro and enter the NFL Draft this year. For his playing ability, the location of where he was born and where he ended up playing college ball didn't have much of an effect. Dart was a four-star recruit and turned out to be a solid football player for the Trojans and Rebels. However, it did mean he lacked the experience of driving on highways with tolls. Utah has very few toll roads and, depending on where a Utah native lives, they may never have to use the express lanes on the interstate. Mississippi doesn't have toll roads. As Dart assimilates into the northeast part of the U.S., especially in New Jersey and New York, he's learned what tolls are and how to navigate the E-ZPass system. A video of Dart driving on the New Jersey Turnpike went viral over the weekend. "I don't know what this stuff means – these ticket, E-ZPasses," Dart said as he approached one of the tolls. Dart had the option of using the E-ZPass lane or taking a ticket and paying the toll as he got off one of the exits. "I just drive by it every time," he admitted. Dart is likely to be backed up on paying his tolls. Luckily, the rookie's contract is worth around $16.9 million, and he'll have enough to pay whatever toll charges hit him. If Dart chooses to live around the East Rutherford area, he shouldn't have many tolls to pay if he stays on the local routes. Dart made his preseason debut on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. He was 12-of-19 with 154 yards and a touchdown pass. New York won the game, 34-25.

Drivers will now have to pay a toll to leave this N.J. expressway service area

Drivers who used a backstreet at the Garden State Parkway's Connie Chung service area to avoid a toll or get a meal have hit the end of the road. The surreptitious route between the service center and a Bloomfield neighborhood is officially off limits to drivers using it as a way to beat the southbound Parkway toll, officials said. The change was first reported by Fox 5 news, which said the driveway off Broad Street was used by residents to go to the service area for a snack, but it was also discovered by drivers looking to beat the toll instead of getting off at the next exit. That driveway behind the service area had been closed off by a gate to prevent cars from exiting onto Broad Street in Bloomfield until Aug. 17, 2022, Tom Feeney, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority told NJ Advance Media. That's when the service area was closed for renovations, he said. 'When the new building opened on Aug. 9, 2023, the driveway between the service area and Broad Street was two-way, cars could enter or exit,' he said. But some drivers learned they could use that hidden driveway to avoid paying the $1.15 toll at Exit 151 Toll Plaza. The Turnpike Authority did a traffic analysis and 'discovered that a large number of vehicles were leaving the southbound Parkway and cutting through the service area to exit onto Broad Street to avoid the toll' at the Watchung Avenue exit, Feeney said. How much was lost in toll revenue wasn't calculated, but the added traffic put pedestrians on local streets at risk, he said. 'That was not just a toll revenue issue, but also a safety issue,' he said. 'The parking lot and driveway in the service area are not designed to serve as a Parkway exit ramp.' Three months ago, the driveway at the rear of the service area was converted to one-way, and traffic was prohibited from exiting onto Broad Street, Feeney said. Residents can still go to the service center for food but to get home, they'll have to 'tip' the Parkway a $1.15 toll at the next exit. Our journalism needs your support.
