Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains performs shoe service at Anandpur Sahib as religious penance
After paying obeisance and offering prayers, Bains, while undergoing penance, performed the 'sewa' for around one-and-a-half hours until 9.30am on Saturday. He announced that he would carry out services on Sunday too at the same gurdwara.
Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhism, issued the directives after Bains appeared before the five Sikh priests (Singh Sahiban) on Aug 6 to clarify his role in the official Punjab govt event held in Srinagar.
The programme, held last month, drew criticism after videos surfaced showing bhangra performances and songs during the solemn occasion, an act widely condemned by Sikh organisations as a breach of Sikh maryada (code of conduct).
Acknowledging his lapse in judgment, Bains admitted he had neither stopped nor objected to the inappropriate proceedings. He expressed apology to the Sikh community for the distress caused.

Following deliberations, the Akal Takht directed Bains to undertake a barefoot pilgrimage from the Golden Temple to Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, visit Gurdwara Kotha Sahib and Gurdwara Baba Bakala, and offer prayers at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Delhi. His penance also includes two days of voluntary service — cleaning footwear, sweeping gurdwara premises in Anandpur Sahib — preparing a deg (community kitchen offering) worth Rs 1,100, and participating in ardas seeking forgiveness.
In a rare addition to such religious directives, Bains has also been tasked with supervising and ensuring repairs to approach roads leading to sacred sites, integrating infrastructure work into the act of atonement.
The Akal Takht emphasised that while the govt may hold educational and awareness events on Sikh gurus, the sanctity of such occasions must be preserved, with future programmes organised in consultation with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
Accepting the Tankah with humility, Bains said he would fulfil each directive in letter and spirit. "As a devout Sikh, I see this as both a personal responsibility and a spiritual duty," he said in Anandpur Sahib.

TVK not alternate, but primary force that will win: Vijay
Madurai: The second state conference of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to be held in Madurai on Aug 21 will set the stage for 'Vaagai Soodum Varalaru Thirumbugiradhu: Vetri Peraniyil Tamil Nadu' (History of victory returns: Tamil Nadu on march to victory) election campaign, party founder Vijay said on Tuesday. The slogan is seen by some as alluding to former chief minister MGR's victory. In a statement, Vijay said the campaign will target the ideological and political enemies of TVK and aim for victory. "In Madurai, the place where three branches of the Tamil language were nurtured, without any compromises, we will fight against our ideological and political enemies and win this war for democracy," he said. He extended an open invitation to his supporters for the conference. The actor-turned politician said the goal of the conference was to cement the party's stance on creating good governance for the people of Tamil Nadu. "We are not an alternate force. We will show the world that we are a primary force that will reclaim victory," he added. Earlier, TVK general secretary N Anand told reporters that police have granted full permission for the conference venue at Parapatti after complying with certain guidelines and regulations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If Your Ears Ring, Stop Sleeping Like This Immediately Derila Ergo Undo "Police sought responses to 42 questions, for which we gave satisfactory replies. SGPC, DSGMC clash over Guru Tegh Bahadur martyrdom anniv
Amritsar: A war of words has erupted between the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) over the observance of Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom anniversary, after SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami accused DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka of hastily announcing commemoration programmes without coordination with the SGPC. Kalka, in the recent past, wrote a letter to Dhami urging that the commemoration functions should be held jointly, which would reflect the spirit of Panthic unity. "Since Guru Sahib attained martyrdom at the site of Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Delhi, the main functions will be centred there," the letter stated, while adding that these commemoration events will be presided over by the SGPC. Responding to this, Dhami on Tuesday questioned, "Why was Kalka's proposal limited to a letter while he was independently announcing programmes and holding meetings with different organisations?" Dhami said that the DSGMC president should not have hastily announced his own programmes, but rather coordinated with the SGPC. In reply to Dhami's response, Kalka said that DSGMC requested the SGPC president to play the role of an elder brother in organising the 350th martyrdom anniversary commemorations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. He said, in the recent past, he held meetings with various Panthic organisations in Amritsar during which the representatives of the SGPC were also present, who assured that they would not create any disruption in the events being organised by the DSGMC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brandi's Journey: Life After Storage Wars Paperela Undo DSGMC general secretary, Jagdeep Singh Kahlon, said DSGMC has the primary right to organise the 350th martyrdom commemorations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, as both the Guru's martyrdom and his final rites took place in Delhi. Citing this, he said the DSGMC sought support from all Panthic institutions and sects, who, in turn, assured their full cooperation. Giving further details, Kalka said that with the support of the Sangat, the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib will be commemorated on a grand scale, in a way that will be remembered across the world. The historic events will be held not only at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, the site of Guru Sahib's martyrdom, and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, where his last rites were performed, but also at the Red Fort. These events will witness participation from the country's top leadership, he claimed. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Four chip plants entailing Rs 4.6k crore investment in AP, Odisha, Punjab get govt nod
NEW DELHI: Strengthening India's efforts in attaining self-sufficiency in the critical semiconductor segment, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved four semiconductor projects, entailing a total investment of Rs 4,594 crore, with one of them being backed by US chipmaker Intel as well as defence and aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The projects will come up in Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, IT & electronics minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The proposals were approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, which initially started the country's semiconductor manufacturing push with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore to provide support for those setting up chip manufacturing facilities. "This is a new industry that we have started in India, and we were able to make a breakthrough after trying for decades previously. We will build upon this," Vaishnaw said. The Cabinet also approved US chip major Intel-backed 3D Glass semiconductor manufacturing unit in Odisha with an investment of Rs 1,943 crore. The plant will be set up by Heterogenous Integration Packaging Solutions with an annual production capacity of five crore units. Vaishnaw said the project will be backed by US firm Lockheed Martin as well.
