The bizarre new airline flying from the UK to New York
Global Airlines is promising to shake up the transatlantic market - but it's not the finished article just yet

A new airline is hoping to steal a slice of the lucrative UK to New York flight market, vowing to bring back the glamour of the 'Golden Age' of air travel.
Global Airlines is planning to take on the might of British Airways, American Airlines, Delta, Virgin and the other major carriers that dominate the transatlantic air routes. And it's hoping its "Superjumbo" Airbus A380 will set it apart.
Entrepreneur James Asquith's airline, which launched in 2021, bought a second-hand 12 year old A380 in May 2023. The Manchester Evening News reports that he wants the double-decker jet to offer five different travel classes.
As well as seat, he wants to install a 'gaming' cabin, bar and other facilities.

The first Global flight, operated by Hi Fly, took off from Glasgow on May 15 bound for New York JFK. It received mixed reactions – not least because the 'gamer cabin' was missing, and the aircraft had a strong resemblance to its former life as a jet operated by China Southern.

YouTube reviewer Josh Cahill headlined his review: "Global Airlines STRANGE First Flight and it was VERY BAD!".
He said the new carrier over-promised and under-delivered. However, The Independent's travel expert Simon Calder however said it was "very comfortable flight" and a "fascinating event".
Despite its name, Global Airlines isn't an airline. Its operations are legally managed by Portuguese carrier Hi Fly while Travelopedia takes care of flight sales.
The Manchester Evening News' writer Liv Clarke was on the second flight from Manchester to JFK and said it was "oddly remarkable".
She wrote: "From check-in to takeoff, with crowds of aviation enthusiasts observing from the airport's boundary, the sense of anticipation was undeniable.
"Clearly, there was the impression that we were part of something significant. Nevertheless, as the journey progressed, it was obvious that the Global Airlines service is yet to be fully realised.

"The branded headrest covers, vanity kits and flight menus couldn't mask the fact that you were sitting inside an aircraft showing 12 years' worth of wear and tear."
Liv said the most impressive part was the jet itself. She wrote: "Several YouTubers were on board gushing over the experience with cameras popping up everywhere like periscopes above the seats. Among them were husband and wife duo Kara and Nate, who boast 4.2million subscribers. Another YouTuber had journeyed from Melbourne, Australia to be on board."
(Image: Liv Clarke )
The jet was largely empty with just 80-90 passengers on the plane, which has a capacity of around 500.
She said however that the seats "felt tired and dated". She wrote: "I noticed several scuffs and stains, and when I fully reclined my seat I could see what looked like tea or coffee stains on the plastic back of the seat. You could see where old stickers had been removed, and where new stickers were covering up old ones. China Southern patterns were still visible and it all felt a bit shabby."

Liv said that lunch was a starter of caprese salad, a choice of main course between herbed chicken ballantine, pan-fried sea bass or spiced white bean and aubergine cassolette, and a citrus tart for dessert.
She wrote: "I opted for the chicken, which was delightful, accompanied by carrots, spring onion, and crushed potatoes with gravy. The salad was flavoursome, complete with a charming miniature bottle of dressing, while the tart was exceptional, offering a refreshing tanginess and lightness."

About an hour later, the crew distributed snacks such as crisps, olives and sweets, along with another drink. This time, I requested champagne and was duly served it, alongside some salted Kettle chips.
Liv added: "Our menu also had an 'a la carte' section which included two types of afternoon tea, one for meat-eaters and one vegetarian. Roughly 90 minutes before we were due to land the crew came round asking if we wanted anything - but didn't explicitly say 'would you like the afternoon tea', it was only by me pushing for more information that they said the afternoon tea was available."

Inflight entertainment didn't impress Liv. She wrote: "To be told the screens wouldn't be working on board was a huge disappointment for me, particularly as I didn't have a tablet computer. I
"I knew I wasn't going to bother watching anything but out of curiosity I scanned the QR code which connected me to the Global Times network.

"A few films were available for viewing, including Beetlejuice, Barbie, Twister, and several others I hadn't heard of. There was a category labelled 'Europeen' - misspelled, with only a handful of TV shows, including the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I opted to stick with my magazines and podcasts, often catching my blurred reflection in the redundant screen opposite me.
In total, Liv's flights cost £697.28 for return flights from Manchester Airport to New York JFK, booked a week prior to departure. This price included 10kg hand luggage and 23kg hold luggage.
However they were later on sale more cheaply with return economy tickets starting from £380 and return business tickets from £1999.

Liv concluded: "Global Airlines has a significant journey ahead to establish a robust brand identity, revamp its A380 (not to mention expand its fleet), and crucially, it needs to become an official airline. Until then, trusted brands such as Aer Lingus, Virgin and British Airways seem much more attractive for transatlantic routes from Manchester.
"If Asquith manages to achieve this, Global Airlines will represent a new chapter in the history of aviation. But that's a very big, Superjumbo jet-sized if."

Al-Hilal make offer for £63m Man Utd target after missing out on Bruno Fernandes

Al-Hilal have submitted a bid to sign one of Manchester United's transfer targets after failing to convince Bruno Fernandes to join the Saudi Pro League. The Saudi club are keen to make a marquee signing this summer, having already hired former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi to be their new head coach. Mohamed Salah had been a long-term target before the Egyptian committed his future to Liverpool. Bruno Fernandes was also approached last week with a mind-boggling £700,000-a-week offer, but the United skipper eventually opted against the move. 'There was an opportunity. The president [of Al-Hilal] called me and asked if I wanted to go there. They were waiting for me,' Fernandes revealed this week. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. 'It would have been easy to move there as I know the Portuguese players there very well, but I want to play at the highest level and compete for major titles.' Having missed out on Fernandes, Al-Hilal have now moved on to their latest target, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the club has sumbitted an official bid to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. The 26-year-old has a €75million (£63m) release clause in his deal and has attracted interest from United as they look for alternatives having failed to sign Liam Delap. But Al-Ahli appeared to now be in pole position to sign the striker and have submitted an initial proposal worth €65m (£54.7m) with a further €5m (£4.2m) in add-ons. Napoli are expected to request that the release clause fee is matched, but reports add that the Saudi club are happy to do that if their initial bid is rebuffed. Osimhen was in talks with both Al-Ahli and Chelsea last summer, but ultimately failed to agree terms on a deal with either side. The Nigerian international instead moved on loan to Galatasaray where he enjoyed a superb campaign, scoring 37 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions to guide the Turkish side to a league and cup double. While a move to Saudi Arabia would be lucrative, fellow Nigerian John Obi Mikel has urged the striker to instead seek a move to the Premier League. 'I hope there is still a Premier League move for him this summer', Mikel told Metro. 'I think the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, they still need a striker. I don't think [Rasmus] Hojlund is the guy for Manchester United. More Trending 'He runs around and works hard but he is not the guy who will score goals, put them in the top four and win them trophies. So for me Manchester United might be the destination. 'I don't want to see him in Saudi right now because he still has so much to offer in Europe. It would be a shame to see him go there. So maybe Arsenal, United, Juventus and PSG too [are his options]. Let's see what happens.' Should a move for Osimhen not materialise, United may be forced to consider alternatives as they seek attacking reinforcements for Ruben Amorim's side. The Red Devils still hold an interest in Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, but both strikers are also wanted by Arsenal. For more stories like this, check our sport page. What to know about the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on launch day

The Nintendo Switch 2 finally hit store shelves on Thursday, eight years after the initial release of Japanese video-game maker Nintendo's popular video game console. Even with a hefty $450 price tag, fans around the world, from Japan to the U.S., lined up outside stores to pick up pre-orders or have a chance to buy the device. The release ends months of anticipation that included pre-order hiccups and fears that tariffs would delay the release of the Switch 2. Here's what to know about the release and where you can buy it. What is the Nintendo Switch? The Nintendo Switch 's unique ability to switch from a handheld console to a traditional one helped make it a hit when it launched in 2017. The Nintendo Switch Lite, which was a handheld-only device released two years later, also became popular, especially during the pandemic. It helped usher in bestselling Nintendo games including 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,' 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe' and 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons.' The Nintendo Switch 2 adds interactive chat and screenshare functions to connect gamers. It will also have a more vibrant display and a larger screen. Nintendo has sold a total of 152 million Switches, just behind its best-selling Nintendo DS console which saw 154 million units move, according to the company. But demand has dwindled for the Switch, now in its eighth year after its debut. Nintendo hopes the new console will boost its declining sales. How much is it and where do I buy it? The base Switch 2 costs $450 and a bundle with the new 'Mario Kart World' included costs $500. It can be found online and in-store at major retailers like Walmart, Target and Best Buy, as well as specialty retailers such as GameStop, but it is expected to be snapped up fast and widespread shortages are expected. What were the hiccups in the rollout? The on-again, off-again tariffs ordered by President Trump — which included goods from Japan — sparked fears Nintendo might have to delay the device. But the launch comes within the 90-day pause on most tariffs. U.S. preorders for the Switch 2 were delayed for several weeks so the company could assess the potential impact of tariffs. When they started in April, high demand sparked a chaotic pre-order process. Scores of consumers trying to pre-order ran into delays or errors. Shoppers took to social media to share long wait times and screenshots of error messages and carts that suddenly went empty. Nintendo acknowledged the 'very high demand' at the time and said it was working hard to fulfill orders, but also urged people to try to buy the device without a pre-order on June 5. What are Nintendo's expectations for the device? Nintendo said it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year through March 2026. The company is hoping the device jump-starts its sagging sales. In May Nintendo reported a 43% decline in profit for the fiscal year through March but promised a turnaround.

Viktor Gyokeres makes Man Utd U-turn after learning Arsenal transfer decision

Viktor Gyokeres had looked to have ruled out a move to Manchester United after their Champions League failure - putting Arsenal in pole position - but the Sporting Lisbon star may have had a change of heart Victor Gyokeres looks to have changed his tune and is now open to a move to Manchester United - despite them not having Champions League football - which was believed to have been a determining factor. The Swede has long been expected to leave Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal had been seen as his most likely destination if he did head to the Premier League. But now a reunion with Ruben Amorim could be on the cards, reports talkSPORT. ‌ No formal talks have been held between those in Manchester and Sporting bosses, but the Red Devils' pursuit of a new striker is well documented. The Portuguese side want around £60million for Gyökeres - which is a £25m reduction on his £85m release clause. ‌ Gyokeres has a verbal agreement in place with Sporting allowing him to leave for less after he chose to stay in Lisbon last summer. Arsenal, like United, are in the market for a new frontman after opting against signing a new No 9 for several windows. Mirror Football understands that Arsenal are prioritising Benjamin Sesko, though. Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta has been negotiating with representatives of both players and their respective clubs simultaneously as the Gunners seek the best deal. However, the decision among the club's hierarchy is to push forward with their swoop for the RB Leipzig forward, rather than Gyokeres. That would leave the Swede, who scored more than 50 times in all competitions, looking for a new buyer. Several of Europe's top clubs are not looking to add a striker which means, even for a player of his quality, options may be limited. Amorim was the man who signed Gyokeres after he impressed in the Championship with Coventry City, later helping him become one of Europe's most prolific strikers. The United boss has just missed out on Liam Delap, who chose to join Chelsea, leaving him to review other options. Matheus Cunha has already been signed for £62.5m. The 27-year-old has just helped Sporting claim the domestic double and has remained tight-lipped on his future. He said: 'Let us see. It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.' Gyokeres was asked specifically about the possibility of joining Arsenal and added: 'I don't know, I just focus on this. I've tried to focus on the last games because it's so important and I don't want to think about anything else. So yeah, if anything is true, let's see in the summer.'
