UK high court tells Paddy Power to pay £1m prize to winner offered £20k

The Guardian05-03-2025

When Corrinne Durber was told by Paddy Power she had won £1m but only received £20,000 she had a choice: fold or double down.
The gardener from Gloucestershire went for the latter and on Wednesday her tenacity paid off – she won a high court case forcing the gambling giant to hand over exactly £1,076,867.57.
Speaking after the decision, Durber said: 'As you can imagine, I'm so relieved and happy that the judge has confirmed I fairly and squarely won £1m from Paddy Power.
'But why couldn't Paddy Power pay up straight away instead of putting me through this legal torment?
'I will never bet with them ever again, and I advise others to be very careful too.'
She added that Paddy Power had 'tried their very best to deny me my rightful winnings'.
'What's the point in betting if betting companies like Paddy Power won't pay-up when someone wins a big jackpot?'
Durber had been playing the Wild Hatter game in October 2020, which was described as a combination of a fruit machine and a wheel of fortune style game with two parts.
After moving to the second part and spinning the jackpot wheel, Durber's iPad screen displayed she had won the 'Monster Jackpot', which was stated as £1,097,132.71 on the day she played.
However, she was only paid £20,265.14 and told she had won the smaller 'Daily Jackpot', with the difference attributed to an error with the game's display as it had been malprogrammed and pointed to the wrong prize.
Durber sued PPB Entertainment Limited, which trades as Paddy Power and Betfair, for breach of contract and the rest of her winnings, based on what she was shown on screen.

In a judgment in her favour handed down on Wednesday, Mr Justice Ritchie said that the idea of 'what you see is what you get' was 'central' to the game.
In a 62-page ruling, he said: 'Objectively, customers would want and expect that what was to be shown to them on screen to be accurate and correct.
'The same expectation probably applies when customers go into a physical casino and play roulette.
'They expect the house to pay out on the roulette wheel if they bet on number 13 and the ball lands on number 13.'
After the ruling, a spokesperson for Flutter UKI, which owns Paddy Power, said: 'Every week tens of thousands of customers win with Paddy Power, including an individual who received a £5.7m jackpot just one year ago.
'We always strive to provide the best customer experience possible and pride ourselves on fairness.
'We deeply regret this unfortunate case and are reviewing the judgment.'

Retailers offering Apple iPads and Samsung Galaxy A9+ for £0

This week's tech deals see Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy tablet drop to £0 in freebie deals - as well as £150 off Lenovo tablets Anyone who's been looking for a tablet upgrade in time for summer travel, or to simply binge series on at home, an Apple iPad may be a top contender to look at this week. Not only for its renowned quality, but a standout deal can see shoppers get one model for free. Virgin Media is still offering the 9th-generation Apple iPad for £0 to shoppers who upgrade their broadband. Anyone who locks into the £88.99 monthly cost will get the device for free. It's only available to Mega Volt package shoppers, who also receive Gig1 Fibre broadband, more than 230 TV channels, and an unlimited O2 Mobile SIM. It's a huge freebie and worth considering for those in need of a broadband upgrade. However, its long-term contract and inclusions may not be needed for others, making the free £299 iPad hard to justify. So, we've scoured rival retailers for other tablet deals. To rival Virgin Media's Apple deal is Samsung, as it hands out a freebie to Android users. Like the above broadband offer, it will require shoppers to buy another product, but it slashes the price of the Galaxy Tab A9+ to £0. Shoppers who buy the £799 Galaxy S25 at Samsung can claim a Galaxy Tab A9+ tablet (worth £299) after their purchase. Dropping the price of the tablet to £0, with proof of purchase. Those not wanting to buy a mobile for the sake of a free tablet can find the A9+ model for less at Amazon, where it's now £159.54. Free Galaxy Tab A9+ tablet at Samsung £0 Samsung Get here Product Description The 9th Gen iPad, which is £0 at Virgin Media, was originally launched in 2021 and has a 10.2-inch screen, and is still compatible with Apple's pencil and smart keyboard. The processor has a relatively good speed for streaming, at-home working and day-to-day use but it's not the newest model around. Shoppers on the lookout for this exact model can find refurbished versions at Amazon, ranging in price from £180 to £190 each. However as the 2021 model is no longer sold at Apple. The refurbished deals at Amazon are from third-party retailers called TechLike and MC-Distribution. Alternatively, Sky Mobile offers a choice of newer Apple iPads and is attractive thanks to its cost-splitting plans. The newer iPad Pro 13" M4 (2024) is priced at £34 when spreading the cost. Also on offer at Sky, for a much cheaper £10.50 per month, is Apple's newest 2025 model. The downside to Sky's deal is its lengthy 48-month contract, but the monthly rate is eye-catching for shoppers who want to split the price instead of paying Apple's £329 rate upfront. Not everyone will be in the market for a flagship Android or Apple device. If so, Currys' current Lenovo P12 discount has cut £150 off the price. Now £249.99 instead of £399, the model has a 3K screen, 12.7-inch display (so bigger than the free iPad size) and quality speakers and camera.
