
Tesla not interested in manufacturing in India, minister says

is not interested in manufacturing in India, said Heavy Industries Minister Kumaraswamy on Monday, as per an ET Now report. The EV giant is unlikely to manufacture vehicles in the country anytime soon, he said.
'Tesla only wants to open showrooms and sell imported cars,' he said.
Kumaraswamy also said India will soon invite applications under its electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing policy. The minister also said Europe's Mercedes Benz, and Skoda-Volkswagen (VW), South Korean Hyundai, and Kia, have shown interest to manufacture EVs in India.
Speaking to journalists, he said the application window for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) will open soon. After that, the government will start accepting formal applications.
The government has announced a scheme that includes significant import tax cuts for foreign automakers that commit to investing in manufacturing electric cars in the country. Under a rewamped scheme, companies will be allowed to import a limited number of electric cars at a lower import duty of 15% versus the current 70% duty if they commit to investing $486 million to build EVs in the country, the Ministry of Heavy Industries said in a statement.
Meanwhile, in February, U.S. President
Donald Trump
said he believes any plans Tesla might have to open a factory in India would be "very unfair."
Tesla had recently finalised some showroom space in India and posted more than two dozen jobs, signalling it is getting closer to a launch.
Tesla has been mulling an India entry for the past several years and Musk has spoken against India's high import duties, calling them a major barrier to Tesla's expansion in the country.
Tesla's gigafactories could boost India's manufacturing and tech sectors by producing EVs, batteries and charging solutions locally. But would they go all in? Tesla also has to be accepted first, and that comes with some challenges. Their direct sales model may need to be adjusted for India's dealer-centric market.
Aftersales service, a critical factor, has to be robust. Then there is pricing — India is price-sensitive, with the bulk of the passenger vehicle market below Rs 20 lakh. The cheapest Model 3 retails for $42,490 in the US (around Rs 37 lakh), placing it firmly in the luxury segment in India, even before duties come into play.
Initially, at least, these cars will likely be imported from Germany, adding a similar amount to the sticker price in duties, unless US President Donald Trump arm-twists India into cutting tariffs. That limits their market Rajeev Chaba, CEO emeritus of JSW MG Motor India, the India unit of Morris Garages, believes price point will be a challenge for Tesla.
Musk, in January, hinted at launching more affordable models in the first half of 2025. A $24,000 car, colloquially called Model 2, has been speculated for years, but that may not happen if news trickling out of China is to be believed, where Tesla is trying to reignite demand with a cheaper, stripped-down version of Model Y instead of a whole new car.
If Tesla wants to have more than a token presence in India, it would need to have better pricing, and value-driven offerings, than even China. 'I think India is ready for more players, especially as EV penetration continues to grow.
Also, India's EV penetration is still low, with electric passenger vehicle sales accounting for less than 3% of total sales. However, sales have grown substantially, from 5,000 units in 2020 to over 113,000 in 2024. It is this momentum Tesla could tap, especially in the premium segment, Ravi Bhatia, president of automotive consultancy Jato Dynamics earlier told ET.

The official said that products of 280 self-help groups were assembled for display-cum-sales at stalls across ULBs, which generated a revenue of Rs 3.94 lakh. From local residents to public representatives, bureaucrats, SHGs, NGOs, etc everyone marched together with a mission 'cleaner, healthier and more resilient urban areas'. The activities proposed to be taken up in the ULBs include campaign launch and IEC drive focusing on awareness through media rallies, door-to-door outreach, de-siltation of storm water drains and removal of debris to prevent water-logging, waste segregation and c omposting at household level, supported by audits and community outreach, updation of water connections and taking up Bhuvan Survey for improved municipal records and enforcement, improving water quality and ensuring mosquito control through chlorination, oil balls, and gambusia fish release, launching Vana mahotsavam, avenue plantation, and Shramadanam, development of at least 1 junction, park and inauguration, training programs for staff and newly formed ULBs to enhance capacity, kalajatha activities, competitions and waste-to-art exhibits. The official said that the plan was a strategic step toward building cleaner, healthier, and more resilient urban areas. By combining infrastructure, innovation, and involvement, it would reinforce Telangana's commitment to sustainable urban development through a people-first approach.

Back in public eye: Madhya Pradesh minister who put party in a spot with remarks on Col Sofiya Qureshi
After his remarks on Operation Sindoor caused an uproar, Madhya Pradesh Tribal Welfare Minister Vijay Shah made his first public appearance in 17 days when he visited the family of a rape-murder victim in Khandwa. Shah was booked by the Madhya Pradesh Police last month after saying in a public meeting in Mhow on May 11 that India taught a lesson to those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack using 'their own sister'. While he did not name anyone, it has been alleged that he was alluding to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had briefed the media when Operation Sindoor was underway. The minister is now under investigation by a Supreme Court-ordered special investigation team (SIT), and had not been seen in public until May 28, when he visited the grieving family of a woman who was gangraped and murdered in Khandwa district's Khalwa region. Both the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the Supreme Court have reprimanded the minister for his statement, and Shah has apologised for the comments three times. The ruling BJP went into damage control mode, and the central leadership of the party is yet to take a call on Shah's future. While his visit to Khandwa on May 28 marks his first public outing since the backlash, he did not speak to the media. Local BJP sources said Shah spent over two hours with the victim's family and promised both financial support and systemic interventions. He reportedly handed over a Rs 60,000 cheque, committed to building a tin roof for the family's house, and promised further financial assistance, sources said. 'He also said that a young girl in the family who had dropped out of school would be re-enrolled. Monthly monitoring meetings are to be initiated in the area to track school dropouts,' a BJP leader said. The Opposition Congress had launched a sarcastic 'missing minister' campaign, plastering posters across Indore and Bhopal with his photograph and a mock reward of Rs 11,000 for anyone who could find him. During this period, Shah skipped the special Cabinet meeting in the historic Rajwada palace to commemorate regional icon, Ahilyabai Holkar, on May 20 and another special Cabinet meeting hosted in the scenic town of Pachmarhi on Tuesday, to honour tribal icon and freedom fighter, Raja Bhabhoot Singh. Shah had also skipped the 300th birth anniversary events of Ahilyabai Holkar, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had arrived in Bhopal on May 31. The Supreme Court has extended the operation of its interim order protecting Shah from arrest. It also closed the suo motu proceedings pending before the Madhya Pradesh High Court as it is already seized of the matter. The SIT had submitted its report to the Supreme Court, which contained investigation details like forensic evidence, and sought more time for the probe.

Staying the course on trade pacts with the UK and US
The uncertainty unleashed by Donald Trump's tariffs has only been aggravated by a spate of recent court rulings. On May 28, the US Court of International Trade struck down Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs, saying that the emergency law (International Emergency Economic Powers Act) does not give the President the power to impose broad tariffs. However, a day later, a federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the tariffs. The case is now likely to work its way through the US legal system. The uncertainty is likely to linger on as the 90-day pause on the Liberation Day tariffs ends in the second week of July. The Trump administration may have hoped that some trade deals would be quickly negotiated. And while the US and the UK have reached an agreement — the deal was announced on May 8th — progress with other major trading nations/blocks remains a protracted process. Take the case of China. A few days ago, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is reported to have said that trade talks between the US and China 'are a bit stalled'. Last Friday, Trump said that China has 'totally violated' its agreement with the US, a charge that China has rejected. The US President is expected to speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping this week to iron out their differences. In the case of Japan, several rounds of talks have taken place, and another is expected before the G7 summit. But last Friday, the legal challenges to his tariffs notwithstanding, Trump also raised the tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50 per cent, potentially impacting countries such as Canada, Mexico and South Korea, which account for a sizeable share of US steel imports. A day later, the European Union, which had agreed to 'accelerate talks' on a US trade deal, has also responded firmly, saying it is prepared to impose 'countermeasures' against the US. It noted that such moves to increase tariffs 'undermine ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated solution'. The new tariffs are effective from June 4. These latest tariff moves come at a time when India and the US are negotiating a bilateral trade deal. A US team is expected to visit India over the coming few days. On Monday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, speaking in Washington at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum's leadership summit, said that a deal between the US and India could happen in the 'not too distant future'. The India-EU trade deal also appears to be on course. As per a report, the two sides have agreed on several chapters, and the pact could be concluded before the end of the year. Coming after the finalisation of the India-UK agreement, the successful culmination of these deals would increase the country's attractiveness as an investment destination.
