Sandringham Scouts treat kids from Johannesburg Children's Home to a magical weekend
Read more: Scouts welcome Johannesburg Childrens Home for weekend of fun and friendship
From the moment they arrived, the children were immersed in the full spirit of Scouting. Groups were formed, according to age, with the youngest joining the Meerkats, followed by the Cubs and then the Scouts. The older children quickly took to their team challenges, giving their teams names and diving into a range of exciting activities.
The Angels in Red proved unstoppable during the Scout competitions, earning top marks across the board, while the Blue Crips flipped their way to first place in the ever-popular pancake challenge. Whether it was fire-making with flint and steel, the fast-paced commando obstacle course, or the quirky nailed-it baking sessions, the children embraced every moment with wide-eyed wonder.
As the sun began to set on Saturday, the campfire was lit, and the real magic began. Children gathered around to sing songs and toast marshmallows over glowing embers. Laughter rang through the night air as they bonded over silly lyrics, gooey treats, and the warmth of shared stories. The day ended with a movie night under the stars, where the younger ones fell asleep mid-scene, content and tired from the day's excitement.
Sunday brought a surprise that left everyone buzzing. Fire Training Centre (FTC) Modderfontein arrived in a bright red Dennis Fire Engine, turning the campsite into an open-air fire safety lesson. The children watched in amazement as firefighters explained the equipment on board, including a live demonstration of the Jaws of Life. The highlight came when each child got the chance to handle the fire hose, blasting water across the field and cheering each other on.
'The Scouts camp was an experience for our kids,' said Kaeleigh Goss, a social worker at the Johannesburg Children's Home. 'It was a highlight that taught them valuable skills and the importance of teamwork. The leaders created such a safe and fun environment, and we are truly grateful for opportunities like this that help shape our children's growth and character.'
Richard Hooper, from Sandringham Scouts, said the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. 'The children haven't stopped talking about it. It was a fantastic weekend, and we are so thankful to every Scouter, adult helper, Scout, Cub, and Meerkat, who helped make it such a success.'
The weekend was more than just an outing; it was a chance for children to play, learn, and explore. For many, it offered a first glimpse into the world of Scouting, but, more importantly, it reminded everyone involved of the power of community, kindness, and the simple joy of being a child.

Alison Botha appears in good spirits after brain aneurysm
Rape survivor Alison Botha has shared a health update, appearing happy and healthy amid her recovery from a brain aneurysm last year. According to her family, the Port Elizabeth woman's health setback was due to the stress of her attackers being released on parole. In 2023, Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger were given an early release after their 1994 attack on Alison, in which they left her for dead. Earlier this year, their parole was revoked by the new Minister of Correctional Services, Pieter Groenewald. In a TikTok video, Alison Botha shared an update with her followers that she was ready to return to social media. Smiling and appearing in good health, she said, 'I know I've been missing for a long time from social media. There are good reasons for that, and I will tell you more about them. 'But there are even more good reasons to be here now to connect you'. @ Welcome to my page 🦋 #alisonbotha #type #southa #viral #sama28 #fyp #inspiration #survivor #ihavelife ♬ original sound – Alison Botha Last month, the administrators behind Alison Botha's page shared a message from the courageous woman who thanked those who financially contributed to her medical treatment following her brain aneurysm. In the message, Alison encouraged her followers to stand firm amid life's obstacles. 'Whatever you are going through, be short-lived, and may you take courage from the fact that it is only a 'patch'. What is wonderful about a 'patch' is that you enter on one side – often unexpectedly – but if you keep going – despite the weight and depression of it – there will come a time when you miraculously exit on the other side. 'Patches always have an end – so take heart and keep moving. Joy, enthusiasm, and happiness are at the other end of the patch. For you, for me, and for everyone like us. She continued: 'You are lucky – as I am – if you have others cheering you on. And although the weight of their expectations is often heavy to carry, it is better to have someone believing in you in order to remind you to believe in yourself. 'I WILL be ok!' 🦋💌 Message from Alison 10 July 2025: Lovely, special people. I know that you want to know how I am, and I apologise… Posted by Alison on Thursday 10 July 2025 In March, Minister of Correctional Services Pieter Groenewald revoked the parole of Alison Botha's attackers, Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger. Both individuals have been reincarcerated and will remain in custody. The men were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1995, a year after their brutal attack. At the time, Pretoria High Court Judge Chris Jansen, who sentenced them – said during his judgement: 'I needed to make it clear they were a threat to society and should never be released.' Alison Botha has shared an update after suffering a brain aneurysm. The brave woman survived a horrific attack 30 years ago. Her attackers' parole was recently via Instagram: @alisonthemovie However, this was overturned when the Department of Justice and Correctional Services announced in October 2004 that all prisoners would automatically become eligible for parole after serving 25 years in prison. Shockingly, Alison Botha's legal advisors stated that she was not consulted in the parole process. Instead, she was notified of the men's release via a telephone call. The stress of the news culminated in a brain aneurysm, which she again, miraculously survived. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
