Real Madrid confirm Vazquez departure
After his deal expired at the end of the season Los Blancos had agreed a short-term contract extension for the Spaniard to keep him for the Club World Cup, which they competed in this summer in the United States.
"Vazquez exemplarily represents the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most beloved players by our fans," said Madrid president Florentino Perez in a statement.
"(He) symbolises the hard work, perseverance, humility, and winning spirit essential to succeed in this shirt."
Originally a winger, the 34-year-old won 23 trophies at the club including five Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles, largely as a squad player.
"I leave Real Madrid but Real Madrid will never leave me," said Vazquez in a goodbye video.
The Spaniard came through the Madrid youth system and spent his whole career at the club, with the exception of a loan to Espanyol in the 2014-15 season, playing 402 times across all competitions for Los Blancos.

‘Pirates is more than a club', says Ouaddou as he embraces huge expectations
Abdeslam Ouaddou is fully aware and embracing the huge burden of expectation at Orlando Pirates as he embarks on the daunting mission to try to knock Mamelodi Sundowns off their perch. The Brazilians have won the Betway Premiership for eight successive seasons in a spell of utter dominance and Pirates played the role of bridesmaids for the past three seasons. Speaking ahead of his first Premiership match as Pirates coach against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm), Ouaddou admitted there is anticipation at the club. The 46-year-old Moroccan started his tenure brightly with a convincing 2-0 MTN8 quarterfinal win over Polokwane City last weekend and they will be looking to continue the winning momentum against Sekhukhune. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says Orlando Pirates is "more than a club." WATCH full interview ➡️➡️➡️ — Mahlatse Mphahlele (@BraMahlatse) August 5, 2025 'When you come to Orlando Pirates, the club has history. You must know how the club was built and how hard people have worked to reach the targets and level they set for themselves,' said Ouaddou. 'Orlando Pirates is more than a club. In Spanish they say, ' Més que un club '. There is a lot of expectation and everybody has to be fully focused and professional. 'The first thing the chair [Irvin Khoza] said was 'your every step will be watched closely', so we have to be professional and give our best in everything we do for the club.' Pirates have boosted the squad with Sihle Nduli, Sipho Mbule, Kamogelo Sebelebele, Yanela Mbuthuma, Tshepang Moremi, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Masindi Nemtajela and Abdoulaye Mariko. Bucs will be battling on five fronts next season, including a return to the Champions League where they reached last season's semifinals, so Ouaddou is happy to have depth in his squad. 'It is important to have the contribution of everyone. I always say you win the game with 11 players but to win competitions and league titles you need the group. 'We have depth on the bench and my impact players are going to be important. You must have noticed I don't use the word substitutes, I try to avoid the word and prefer to use 'impact players'.' Sundowns are expected to be strong again this season and Ouaddou said they are focused on the targets they have set themselves. 'I came to Pirates not to change everything that is there. It is important to keep the legacy and things that worked for the previous coaches. My task is to bring more competence and reach targets that are wanted by the club's board and the fans. 'We are excited for the season and I believe we have quality players to reach our targets and we are going to fight hard for that.'

Former Arsenal player Partey granted bail on rape charges
Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges. The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged on July 4, four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. The midfielder stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. The footballer showed no reaction as the charges were read out and was not asked to enter any pleas. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said Partey "denies all the charges against him", adding he welcomed "the opportunity to finally clear his name". Under his bail conditions he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel. Reports in recent days have linked Partey with a move to La Liga club Villarreal. As bail conditions were discussed in court, chief magistrate Paul Goldspring said: "I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now." Partey is due to appear at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. A spokesperson for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence said the group was "profoundly disappointed" in the London club over their handling of the matter. Speaking outside court, Honor Barber told the PA news agency: "We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love and the club that has values that we believe in was playing, week-in, week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence. "We protested outside almost every home game last season because we wanted to disrupt the wall of silence that the club has put up around this issue." Barber said the group wanted the club to publish their sexual violence policies, "suspend anyone under investigation for sexual offences" and "properly support the survivors". British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana.

Wirtz's creativity can make up for Alexander-Arnold loss, says Liverpool boss Slot
Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid has left Liverpool wanting for creativity but the signing of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz can help offset that deficiency, the Premier League club's manager Arne Slot said. Liverpool smashed their transfer record in June to sign Wirtz and bolster their attacking options, with the German international having scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz played in a Liverpool shirt for the first time at Anfield on Monday, putting in an impressive performance in the Merseyside club's 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao in a preseason match. 'I think there's always room for improvement in every department. Like I said, we've added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons. So, Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third,' Slot said. 'We've lost with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] a lot of creativity from the back. Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special — I think Flo has this quality as well in a totally different position.
