Why Flipkart and China Are Crucial to Walmart's Global Strategy

Globe and Mail2 days ago
Walmart Inc. 's WMT global strategy relies heavily on its investments in key markets like China and India, with Flipkart leading its e-commerce and advertising initiatives. These two regions are quickly becoming essential to the retail giant's future growth. Walmart's worldwide e-commerce sales grew 22% in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, driven partly by strong growth in these markets.
The company's International segment experienced net sales growth of 7.8% in constant currency, with China and Flipkart emerging as major contributors. They helped counteract challenges from currency fluctuations and margin pressures in other regions. Both operations align with Walmart's long-term omni-channel strategy, combining solid physical infrastructure with digital scale.
Flipkart's expansion is fueled by its dominant marketplace position in India and a maturing logistics network. Meanwhile, China's performance benefits from Sam's Club's growth and rapid e-commerce execution. The country also remains a major source of merchandise imports for Walmart, especially for products like electronics and toys.
Walmart is investing in faster delivery, advertising monetization and membership growth across both markets. In Sam's Club China, membership income increased more than 40% in the first quarter, while Flipkart continues to be a key part of Walmart's international advertising efforts, which grew 20% year over year.
Strategic investments in Flipkart and China are helping Walmart strengthen its digital competencies, test innovations in densely populated markets and diversify revenue streams beyond mature U.S. channels. As traditional retail margins come under pressure from tariffs and mix shifts, Walmart's growing international presence, especially in India and China, acts as an operational hedge.

Apple just got a big win in Trump's tariff war. It may have bigger concerns

Apple's iPhone 16 series are displayed for sale at an electronics store in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 17. (Firdous Nazir/NurPhoto/Getty Images via CNN Newsource) Apple CEO Tim Cook should be breathing a sigh of relief. The White House on Wednesday ratcheted tariffs on Indian imports up by an additional 25 per cent, raising the total levies on one of the United States' most crucial trading partners to 50 per cent when they kick in later this month. But smartphones are exempt from U.S. President Donald Trump's new levies on India, marking a crucial win for the tech giant as it approaches its most important time of the year: its annual September iPhone launch followed by the holiday season. Apple will also dodge incoming new tariffs on semiconductors, since it's committed to building iPhone components in the United States, Trump said Wednesday. That's not to say tariffs won't hurt; CEO Tim Cook said tariffs will likely cost the company U.S.$1.1 billion this quarter. But analysts say Apple has bigger concerns, such as its future product strategy and approach to artificial intelligence, a burgeoning field that the tech behemoth is perceived to be behind in. Under different circumstances, such high tariffs could have spelled trouble for Apple. The iPhone is Apple's most important product, making up the majority of its revenue. Most iPhones sold in America come from India. And the Americas, which includes the United States, is Apple's largest market. 'In terms of the longer-term issues, more than a year out, I would say tariffs are probably 20 per cent of it,' said Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, who has covered Apple for decades. 'I think what's going on the regulatory environments (is) probably 25 per cent, and 55 is related to how they're going to capitalize on AI.' Tariffs are a hurdle but manageable Tariffs are a challenge for Apple, but one that analysts seem confident the company can manage. A combination of Apple's diversified supply chain – which it partially shifted to areas like India and Vietnam around five years ago to reduce reliance on China during COVID – along with its high margins and Cook's operations expertise put the company in a strong position. Supply chain resilience is 'supposed to allow you to adjust tactically to any major changes that comes unexpected,' said Runar Bjørhovde, a research analyst for market research firm Canalys. That held true even before Apple committed to investing an additional $100 billion in the United States to manufacture iPhone parts domestically on Wednesday. While moves like these don't directly impact tariff policy, they do likely help Apple curry favor with the administration, especially as Trump has pressed Apple to build its iPhones domestically. 'Look, he's not making this kind of an investment anywhere in the world, not even close,' Trump said. 'He's coming back. I mean, Apple is coming back to America.' Some analysts already expected that the iPhone would be exempt from the upcoming levies on India ahead of Wednesday's tariff announcement. But the back-and-forth tariff policies, which have changed multiple times throughout the year, make it challenging to predict what could happen in the future. 'Because (smartphones are) such an important category, the relationship that Apple has with both administrations, and specifically, even the U.S. administration, we do think that they will be able to maneuver against this threat,' said Nabila Popal, senior director with the International Data Corporation's data and analytics team. 'But it is important, of course. It does present a risk.' That said, analysts largely believe India and China are Apple's only two options for producing U.S.-bound iPhones at scale. And since iPhone models available in the United States don't precisely match those sold elsewhere, Apple can't just redirect iPhones intended for different markets. New iPhones sold in America, for example, don't have physical SIM card slots anymore, and they support millimeter wave 5G, the kind of connection that provides faster, low-latency speeds but usually only at a short distance. 'It's a massive tactical nightmare to deal with,' said Bjørhovde. 'Because you have to try and find a sweet spot and figure out what comes next.' Cook said iPhones will continue to be assembled outside of the United States for 'a while' during an event at the Oval Office announcing the new $100 billion investment on Wednesday. But he pointed to the company's strategy of instead producing iPhone components stateside. 'Well, if you look at the bulk of it, we're doing a lot of the semiconductors here, we're doing the glass here, we're doing the Face ID module here, and so there's a ton of it, and we're doing these for products sold elsewhere in the world,' Cook said. 'And so there's a lot of content in there from United States.' Apple's AI troubles The narrative that Apple is behind in AI has been looming over the company all year – and some analysts see it as a more challenging issue to overcome than tariffs. Apple delayed a high-profile upgrade to its Siri assistant that would have enabled it to provide more personalized answers and act across apps, bringing it up to speed with the agent-like capabilities that Google and OpenAI are pursuing with their digital helpers. And the company's rivals are still using that setback as ammunition to promote their own products over Apple's. Just this week, Google posted an ad for its upcoming Pixel 10 phone that said: 'If you buy a new phone because of a feature that's coming soon, but it's been coming soon for a full year, you could change your definition of soon.' Apple's initial batch of AI features also didn't launch in time for the iPhone 16's arrival last September. At the same time, many of Apple's peers are seeing booming returns from their AI investments. Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT) both hit $4 trillion in market capitalization in July, a milestone Wall Street previously thought Apple (AAPL) might reach first. That's partially because of their fundamentally different products and business models. Apple is a consumer hardware company. In contrast, Microsoft, Meta (META) and Nvidia also provide the tools that businesses rely on to support AI-powered services and features, like cloud computing, chips and AI models. Still, Apple saw stellar earnings results for the June quarter, surpassing expectations for iPhone sales – including in China – and overall revenue. But during Apple's earnings call, analysts pressed Cook about his perspective on AI and what it means for the company's products. Those questions ranged from whether AI services might be eating into search engine usage, whether the forthcoming Siri upgrade could drive future new products and whether Apple would consider acquiring AI companies to further its product roadmap. 'Taking a step back, we see AI as one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime,' Cook said in his opening remarks during the earnings call. 'We are embedding it across our devices and platforms and across the company. We are also significantly growing our investments.' But Apple can't risk falling too far behind when it comes to the iPhone's AI capabilities. By doing so, it could create an opportunity for Samsung, Google and Qualcomm – the three of which dominate the Android phone space – to pull ahead, says Ted Mortonson, managing director and technology sector strategist at financial services company Baird. 'What's more important with investors is, after the iPhone 17, what do they really do?' he said. 'I mean, as far as generative AI and AI functionality, that that's the real focus on Apple right now.'

Toyota warns of $9.5-billion U.S. tariff hit, slashes annual profit forecast

Japan's Toyota Motor said on Thursday it expected a hit of nearly US$10-billion from President Donald Trump's tariffs on cars imported into the United States, the highest such estimate yet by any company, underscoring growing margin pressures. The world's top-selling car maker also cut by 16 per cent its forecast for full-year operating profit, reflecting challenges for global manufacturers grappling with rising costs from U.S. levies on cars, parts, steel and aluminum. 'It's honestly very difficult for us to predict what will happen regarding the market environment,' Takanori Azuma, Toyota's head of finance, told a briefing, vowing to keep making cars for U.S. customers, regardless of tariff impact. Azuma said the 1.4 trillion yen (US$9.50-billion) estimate also includes fallout suppliers are facing, particularly those in the U.S. importing parts from Japan, though he declined to say how much of the total was attributable to that. Rivals have reported smaller tariff hits so far: GM has projected one of US$4- to US$5-billion for the year, while Ford expects a $3-billion hit to full-year gross revenues. Global auto leaders say U.S. trade deals not good for industry Jeep maker Stellantis said tariffs were expected to add US$1.7-billion in expenses for the year. Toyota cut its operating profit forecast for the financial year to end-March 2026 to 3.2 trillion yen (US$21.7-billion), down from a previous outlook of 3.8 trillion yen. It had previously estimated a tariff hit of 180 billion yen for April and May, but that was solely for the impact from tariffs on Toyota's vehicles. It had not issued a full-year projection until now. For the first quarter from April to June, Toyota reported an operating profit of 1.17 trillion yen, down from 1.31 trillion a year earlier, but above the 902 billion average of seven analyst estimates compiled by LSEG. Toyota's North American business swung to an operating loss of 63.6 billion yen in the first quarter, from profit of 100.7 billion a year earlier, as it took a hit of 450 billion from the tariffs. Its broad production operations, which include U.S., Canadian, Mexican and Japanese plants, expose it to tariffs not only on direct exports but also on vehicles and parts shipped across borders within North America. Honda sees 50% operating profit drop with stronger yen and U.S. tariff impacts, raises full-year forecast Last week, the automaker said it turned out some 1.1 million Toyota and Lexus brand vehicles in North America in the first six months of 2025, including more than 700,000 in the United States. The first-quarter results highlight the pressure U.S. import tariffs are putting on Japanese automakers, even as a trade pact between Tokyo and Washington offers potential relief. Under the deal agreed last month, Japanese auto exports into the United States would face a 15 per cent tariff, down from levies totalling 27.5 per cent previously. But a timeframe for the change has yet to be unveiled. Last week, Toyota reported record global output and sales for the year's first half, driven by strong demand in North America, Japan and China, including that for petrol-electric hybrid vehicles. Toyota also announced on Thursday a plan to build a new vehicle factory in Japan, where car sales have been falling due to a shrinking population and declining ownership. Toyota said it planned to start operations early next decade at the new plant, but has yet to decide production models. The company's shares ended down 1.5 per cent after the earnings release.

Non-IFRS financial measures EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA In addition to the Company's results determined in accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards, the Company presents EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA, non-IFRS measures, because the Company believes they are useful in evaluating its operating performance. EBITDA represents net profit (loss) for the period before the impact of taxes, interest, depreciation, and amortization of intangible assets, and Adjusted EBITDA represents EBITDA, further adjusted mainly for transaction expenses that are directly attributable to the business combination with Thunder Bridge Capital Partners IV, Inc., accounted for as a reverse recapitalization, and including Nasdaq listing expenses incurred in connection with that business combination, and the other items explained in this paragraph. Adjusted EBITDA is being calculated differently for the first quarter of fiscal 2026 than it was previously calculated for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. When the Company announced its financial results on May 13, 2025 for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, the further adjustment to calculate Adjusted EBITDA consisted only of transaction expenses. For the first quarter of fiscal 2026, (a) further adjustments were made for the non-cash expenses of share-based compensation and change in fair value of warrant liability, and (b) in the quarter-over-quarter comparison published today, change in fair value of warrant liability was also included in Adjusted EBITDA for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 (it was not included as an adjustment for Adjusted EBITDA for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 in the Company's financial results published May 13, 2025). There was no share-based compensation in the fourth quarter or first quarter of fiscal 2025, and no change in fair value of warrant liability in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. See, also, the notes under 'Reconciliation of Adjusted EBITDA.' The Company uses EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA to evaluate its ongoing operations and for internal planning and forecasting purposes and believes that EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA may be helpful to investors because they provide consistency and comparability with past financial performance. However, EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA are presented for supplemental informational purposes only, have limitations as an analytical tool, and should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for financial information presented in accordance with IFRS. A reconciliation is provided below for each non-IFRS financial measure to the most directly comparable financial measure stated in accordance with IFRS. Investors are encouraged to review the related IFRS financial measures and the reconciliation of these non-IFRS financial measures to their most directly comparable IFRS financial measures, and not to rely on any single financial measure to evaluate Coincheck Group's business. Please see tables on the following pages for reconciliations of non-IFRS financial measures. For the convenience of the reader, where applicable, Coincheck Group has translated U.S. Dollar amounts from Japanese Yen at the exchange rate of ¥144.17 per $1.00, which was the ¥/$ exchange rate reported by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as of June 30, 2025. This information is intended to be reviewed in conjunction with the Company's filings with the SEC. EBITDA ¥ (399 ) ¥ 1,014 ¥ 719 Prior to the first quarter of fiscal 2026, the Company had no share-based compensation expense. In evaluating how Adjusted EBITDA should be calculated for the first quarter of fiscal 2026 (and the foreseeable future), the Company considered, in addition to transaction expenses, the non-cash expenses of (i) share-based compensation, the majority of which consisted of Coincheck Group restricted share unit awards granted to two of Coincheck, Inc.'s co-founders, and other restricted share unit awards related to the business combination with Thunder Bridge Capital Partners IV, and (ii) change in fair value of warrant liability, which fluctuates quarter to quarter based on the Company's share price. The Company believes that showing its EBITDA results, further adjusted to exclude share-based compensation and change in fair value of warrant liability, can present a clearer view of the Company's operational performance, and is helpful to view together with EBITDA and net profit or loss.
