Maharashtra Minister caught playing rummy during Assembly session, Opposition demands resignation

MUMBAI: In Maharashtra, eight farmers are ending their lives by suicide each day, while State Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate was caught playing online Junglee Rummy during the recently concluded Maharashtra State Assembly's monsoon session.
NCP (SP) MLA and newly appointed NCP (SP) organizational secretary Rohit Pawar posted a video of Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate seemingly engrossed in the online game.
Pawar alleged that the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, which currently cannot act without consulting its 'big boss' BJP, is showing poor governance, with Kokate caught on camera playing rummy.
He said it was unfortunate that while 767 farmers have died by suicide in the last three months in Maharashtra, the minister is busy gambling.

Maha: Outstanding Agri loans to various banks surge to Rs 37,392 crore

Mumbai: Amid hope for a crop loan waiver decision by the MahaYuti government as promised ahead of assembly elections, the arrears towards agriculture loan repayable to banks as on June this year have been reported at Rs 37,392 crore. According to the data compiled by the state cooperation department, of the Rs 37,392 crore, the district central cooperative banks (DCCBs) have yet to recover arrears of Rs 15,492 crore, nationalised banks Rs 18,00 crore, regional rural banks Rs 800 crore and private banks Rs 3,000 crore. The increasing outstanding dues are adversely impacting the finances of these banks. Nearly 20.37 lakh bank accounts of farmers have outstanding dues. The department sources on Thursday hinted that the arrears due to non-repayment by farmers towards crop loan, short, medium and major loans are expected to grow further as the farmers expect an early decision on crop loan waiver. Further, the department sources said that farmers are not repaying the loans despite the appeal made by the Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar and Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate to clear their dues at the earliest without waiting for the announcement of crop loan waiver. The government, on the last day of the monsoon session on July 18, announced the establishment of a committee to look into the crop loan waiver issue and the present state of agricultural stress. Cooperation Minister Babasaheb Patil said, 'The government has set up a committee to study the crop loan waiver option. It is a matter of concern that even the financially sound farmers are not repaying the loan. The financial health of district central cooperation banks, which play a major role in the rural economy, is becoming delicate. They are expected to land in big financial trouble.' According to the cooperation department sources, crop loans worth Rs 70,000 crore on average are disbursed annually in the state. Of which, 65 per cent of loans are disbursed by nationalised banks and 35 per cent by district central cooperative banks. 'Financially sound farmers with large land holdings opt for loans from the nationalised banks, while farmers having small and marginal holdings take loans from district central cooperative banks.' Sources said that the financial condition of many district central cooperative banks, including Nashik, Wardha, and Nagpur district banks, has become fragile. Even the financially sound district central cooperative banks are likely to face similar financial problems if the arrears from farmers towards agriculture loans increase in future. 'The government provides agricultural loans at concessional interest rates. However, farmers are not in the mood to repay loans as they anxiously wait for a decision on the crop loan waiver. However, if the farmers continue to repay loans, then there is every possibility that the rural agricultural credit system may collapse,' warned sources from the cooperation department.

Bangladesh: Yunus forms panel to probe Gopalganj clashes, blames Hasina's party for 'planned attack'

Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus forms an inquiry commission to investigate the July 16 Gopalganj clashes, accusing the banned Awami League and its student wing of orchestrating a planned attack on the National Citizens Party rally. read more Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has formed a six-member inquiry commission to investigate the recent violent clashes in Gopalganj, alleging that the banned Awami League and its student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, orchestrated a premeditated attack on a public gathering of the National Citizens Party (NCP) on July 16. In a statement issued by the government, Dr. Yunus said the commission was being formed in response to the 'deterioration of law and order, attacks on the district prison and government establishments, and disruptions to public safety' during the unrest surrounding the NCP's scheduled event in the Gopalganj district headquarters. Abu Tariq, a decorated freedom fighter. Other members include Khandaker Md. Mahbubur Rahman (Additional Secretary, Public Security Division), Md. Saiful Islam (Senior District and Sessions Judge), Brigadier General Shahidur Rahman Osmany (Commander, 21 Infantry Brigade), Sardar Nurul Amin (Additional Inspector General of Police), and Dr. Sajjad Siddiqui (Chair, Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Dhaka). Formed under Section 3 of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1956, the panel has been tasked with identifying the causes of the violence, the actors behind it, and recommending legal action. It will also examine the attacks on the prison, other state facilities, and disruptions to public order, as well as suggest measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The decision follows findings by a preliminary investigation committee that implicated supporters of the outlawed Awami League and its affiliates in what was described as a 'planned' assault on NCP members and sympathizers. The violence prompted local authorities to impose Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, followed by a curfew and the deployment of armed forces under In-Aid-to-Civil Power provisions. The crackdown resulted in casualties, although no official figures have been released yet. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Dr. Yunus's administration has tasked the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs with supporting the inquiry commission logistically and financially. The panel is required to submit its findings, along with actionable recommendations, within three weeks. The Chief Advisor's move marks a decisive escalation in the government's response to political unrest, placing blame squarely on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's banned political network and intensifying scrutiny of its alleged activities despite its proscribed status.

Decision on Manikrao Kokate after meeting him next week: Ajit Pawar

MUMBAI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday said he will meet agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) next week to hear him out on the controversy over the minister playing a card game on his phone in the legislative council, and then take a decision. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar arrives at the Vidhan Bhavan for the monsoon session of the state assembly in Mumbai (PTI FILE) Pawar also emphasised that this was not the first time Kokate, a five-time lawmaker, had landed in the middle of a controversy and had received a warning. 'He is yet to meet me. The last time he did something like this, I asked him to be careful. After the second incident, I had warned him. Now, I will meet him either on Monday or Tuesday to hear his side of the story and then take a call after discussing it with the chief minister (Devendra Fadnavis),' Pawar told reporters in the state secretariat on Thursday afternoon. To be sure, Fadnavis has already made his displeasure known at Kokate's conduct in the legislative council. 'It was absolutely wrong. Ministers are expected to take legislative business very seriously even if their business is not on the agenda. Members do read documents and news but the video of Kokate playing rummy was inappropriate. Even though he tried to clarify that the rummy game popped up on his mobile screen, what happened was indecorous,' Fadnavis told reporters on July 21 after the video of Kokate playing an online card game in the legislative council emerged. Kokate, who represents Sinnar assembly in Nashik, initially denied the accusation, insisting that he wanted to watch the proceedings on YouTube when an ad for a card game appeared on the screen and people thought he was playing. Legislator Rohit Pawar of the NCP (Sharad Pawar), who released the first video of the minister playing cards, put out two more to rebut the minister's claim and demonstrate that the card game visible on Kokate's phone was not an advertisement. Rohit said the NCP should sack the minister, a demand echoed by other opposition parties. Responding to the demands, Ajit Pawar said he was an outspoken leader who called the spade a spade and pointed to a probe ordered by the legislative council chairman Ram Shinde into the episode. Senior NCP leaders said Ajit Pawar has two options: to ask Fadnavis to drop Kokate from the council of ministers or change his portfolio. 'The final call will be taken by Ajit dada in consultation with senior leaders before meeting Fadnavis,' said a senior minister seeking anonymity. NCP state president Sunil Tatkare has already said Ajit Pawar will take a call on Kokate. Kokate is no stranger to controversies. In January, he embarrassed the ruling alliance when he said that there was '3% to 4% corruption in every government scheme'. In February, he compared farmers with beggars and said, 'Nowadays, even beggars do not even accept a single rupee but the government offers crop insurance to farmers for just one rupee.' In April, he again sparked a row when he accused farmers of deliberately defaulting on crop loans in the hope of getting a loan waiver, and splurging the money saved on weddings and engagements. The controversy further intensified when Kokate accused the media of twisting facts and offered a bizarre clarification for his previous statement about crop insurance for Re 1. 'The point of that statement was that the government takes Re 1 from farmers against insurance. It doesn't give money to them, so the beggar, in this case, is the government and not the farmers. But my statement was twisted,' he said. An irked Fadnavis again expressed his unhappiness at the latter's fresh remarks. 'I didn't hear what he said but if he has said something like this, then it is wrong,' he said on Tuesday.
