Pune Police claim ‘no case' under Atrocities Act, say issue resolved through dialogue
PUNE: The Pune police have denied allegations of caste-based abuse and assault by officers during a raid at a residence in Kothrud, even as the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) demanded immediate action, including the registration of a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The women alleged that the police targeted them for helping another woman in distress. The allegations triggered political reactions and protests, with Congress and NCP(SCP) accusing the Pune police of high-handedness and caste bias. Harshavardhan Sapkal, president, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, called the incident a reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in the city. 'Police arrogance is growing, while drug rackets and gangs remain unchecked. The officers responsible for harassing these women must be booked under the Atrocities Act,' he said, questioning why an FIR had not been registered. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MP Supriya Sule also flagged the matter, stating on social media platform X that she had received a video showing the alleged abuse. 'If the contents of the video are true, it is extremely serious. The Home Minister must take urgent cognisance,' she posted. The incident prompted protests outside the Pune Police Commissionerate late Saturday night. Among those who accompanied the women and demanded accountability was Sujat Ambedkar, son of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi president Dr Prakash Ambedkar. He questioned the police's failure to register a case under the Atrocities Act and sought a written explanation. However, inspector Sandeep Deshmane, Kothrud Police, in a written response to the complainants, said the initial investigation did not support the version presented by the women. 'Prima facie, the facts do not fall under the scope of the Atrocities Act,' he stated. Amitesh Kumar, Pune Police Commissioner, said, 'The issue has been resolved through dialogue.' Meanwhile, Sambhaji Kadam, deputy commissioner of police (Zone III), said no case under the SC/ST Atrocities Act has been registered. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said, 'Instructions have been given to police not to come under any pressure and act as per the law.'

FIR against party leader over ‘A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb', Samajwadi Party chief hits back

The controversy erupted after a video of one such class surfaced on social media. In the footage, schoolchildren—wearing uniforms and reportedly from a private school—were seen being taught alternative alphabet associations such as: A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb (Ambedkar), D for Dimple (Yadav) and M for Mulayam Singh Yadav. The complaint also mentioned that comparing Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar to Akhilesh and Dimple was an insult to the Dalit icon. According to police officials, the content raised concerns of political indoctrination of minors, prompting the registration of a case under relevant sections, including Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 353(2) (statements conducing to public mischief) and section 3(2)(V) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Farhad Gada, who runs the PDA Pathshala—named after the SP's social justice plank 'Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak' (Backward Classes, Dalits, Minorities) plank—defended the lessons. He claimed the goal was not merely to teach ABCs but to 'educate children about the great men of Samajwadi ideology' and foster political awareness from a young age. Gada also revealed his ambition to expand such schools throughout the district. Taking to the social media platform X, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, 'Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public.'

Citing Malegaon blast case verdict, Yogi accuses opposition of ‘shielding terrorists'
1 2 Lucknow: Accusing opposition parties of "implicating innocent Hindus" while shielding actual terrorists in reference to the recent clean chit to the accused of the Malegaon Blast, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday alleged that Congress and Samajwadi Party repeatedly conspired against nationalists and were, in the Malegaon case, questioning the credibility of the country's constitutional institutions. "Will Congress ever apologise to the nation for its misdeeds?" the CM asked while addressing a public meeting in Meerut. He further said that the politics of Congress and SP was long centred on casteism, communal riots, and appeasement of mafia. Calling their approach to terrorism "soft", the CM demanded a public apology from Congress, stating that its politics rooted in casteism, riots, and mafia appeasement deeply harmed the nation. The CM was in Meerut to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects and participated in the bhoomi pujan of a Rs 2,517 crore Integrated Township project, spread across 295 hectares. The CM also provided financial assistance to young entrepreneurs, self-help groups, and housing scheme beneficiaries. Dedicating the township project to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the CM announced that its name would be 'Atal Shatabdi'. Located near the Rapid Rail corridor, this project aims to offer affordable and sustainable housing to residents of the National Capital Region. "The township will reshape Meerut's urban landscape with integrated residential, industrial, and commercial facilities, along with schools, technical institutes, and medical colleges. The project is expected to generate employment for lakhs and establish Meerut as a new hub of development," he said. Elaborating on the development in Meerut in recent years, the CM said that earlier known for its 'Chor Bazar' areas like Sotiganj, it was now gaining international recognition for its sports goods industry, thanks to initiatives like Rapid Rail, the 12-lane expressway, and the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. The country's first sports university, named after Major Dhyan Chand, is coming up in Meerut, he said, while the country's longest expressway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj will be completed by the end of the year, reducing travel time to Lucknow to just six hours. He also announced the commencement of survey work for the Meerut–Haridwar expressway and the integration of divisional offices under one roof as key developmental initiatives and announced new development projects as well, including the reconstruction of the Inner Ring Road and a new Circuit House. He urged people to purchase indigenous products over foreign goods to stop national wealth "from flowing into anti-national activities". The CM also announced that on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, women would be able to travel for free in state transport buses from Aug 8 to 10. He credited the govt's zero-tolerance policy for ridding Meerut of riots and crime and putting it on the path of development. "Eight years ago, Meerut was burning in the flames of communal violence. Today, it is surging ahead with infrastructure like the Rapid Rail and Expressways," he said. During the event, the Chief Minister distributed loans amounting to Rs 29 crore to 675 entrepreneurs under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyam Vikas Abhiyan. Financial assistance of Rs 64 crore was also extended to 881 self-help groups. Keys to homes were handed over to beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana, and farmers excelling in their field were honoured with citation certificates.
