‘Free iPhone' in Instagram gift box turns costly for Hyderabad resident

A 38-year-old man from Asif Nagar was duped of ₹1.05 lakh in an online gift scam after being lured by a fraudulent Instagram account posing as a mobile store. The incident played out on July 15, when the victim came across a page named 'Zam Zam Mobilez'. The scammers, posing as representatives of the page, claimed that he had won a luxury gift box containing an iPhone, an Ultra watch, and earbuds.
They then shared a malicious link, instructing him to confirm 'Parcel No. 65' along with his name during a WhatsApp call. Over the course of the interaction, the fraudsters demanded multiple payments under various false pretences, including courier charges, GST, customs clearance, packaging, and gift fees.
Unaware of the deception, the victim made several payments, amounting to a total loss of ₹1.05 lakh. The scam came to light when he was asked to transfer an additional ₹15,000 the next day. Suspecting foul play, he sought advice from a friend and realised he had been conned.
A case was booked by the cybercrime wing of the Hyderabad Police, and an investigation is underway to trace the criminals behind the fake Instagram page.

Mumbai crime branch nab Rajasthan duo running online ‘lost love' scam; ₹16 lakh worth of gold cash recovered

Mumbai: The city crime branch unmasked a pair of smooth-talking fraudsters from Rajasthan who preyed on heartbreak and hope, weaving an elaborate online scam that promised to reunite lost lovers—for a steep price. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused allegedly targeted individuals distressed over broken relationships, luring them into paying for expensive rituals under the guise of removing "obstacles in love". According to police, on Aug 1, a 52-year-old woman from South Mumbai lodged a complaint at Pydhonie police station. She reported that an unknown intruder entered her home through a partially open door and stole 129gm of gold and nearly Rs 3.2 lakh in cash, totalling a value of Rs 16.2 lakh. Pydhonie police registered an FIR of theft, and Unit 2 of the crime branch started a parallel probe. As crime branch unit 2 dug deeper, an unexpected twist emerged. Investigators learned that the complainant's daughter, recently estranged from her partner, stumbled upon an Instagram profile named 'Irfan Khanji', awash with alluring promises like "Lost love found in 24 hours" and "Get your love back." Drawn in by the hope of mending her relationship, she shared her number, setting in motion a con worthy of a screenplay. Soon, she was contacted by a man posing as a cleric. The man convinced her that mystical rituals could dissolve the barriers to her romance—if she could provide the necessary items. His shopping list read like a treasure inventory: Silver pots, gold lamps, gold flies, potted plants, and even gold nails. Payments were funnelled into shadowy third-party bank accounts, and, in the final act, the accused travelled to Mumbai to collect the gold straight from her home. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During the course of the investigation, police stumbled upon a few suspected mobile numbers with which the complainant was in touch. Police zeroed in on two numbers, which were found to be of men claiming to be spiritual gurus. "Based on technical analysis, when we questioned why she was in contact with these two men and on sustained questioning, she broke down and narrated the real story. We traced the suspects to Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan and arrested Vikas Manoj Kumar Meghwal (22) and Manoj Shyamsundar Nagpal (30)," said an officer. During interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime, and police recovered all stolen property—129gm of gold worth Rs 13 lakh and Rs 3.18 lakh in cash. Investigators also found that the accused similarly cheated young women in Haryana and Delhi. Further, police noted the presence of active gangs in Sri Ganganagar that sell Instagram accounts with followers, along with linked bank accounts and SIM cards, which are then used in such fraud schemes. Police have urged young people to be cautious of such online offers, particularly those exploiting emotional distress.

Bengaluru Cop Suspended After Thief In Custody Wears Uniform To Impress Wife

Bengaluru police have suspended a constable over an incident in which a thief wore his official uniform to impress his wife during a video call while in custody. The episode only came to light a year later during a separate investigation. Constable HR Sonar, from the Govindapura police station, was suspended following an investigation. It was found that Saleem Sheikh, also known as Bombay Saleem, had put on Sonar's uniform while staying at a hotel under police supervision. The incident dates back to 2024, when Saleem, reportedly with more than 50 theft cases to his name, was arrested by the Govindapura police in connection with a burglary. As part of efforts to recover stolen jewelry, sarees, and other valuables, officers took him outside Bengaluru and lodged him at a hotel. According to police sources, Sonar and another constable left Saleem locked in the hotel room while they went shopping. In their absence, Saleem allegedly found Sonar's uniform in the room, put it on, and made a WhatsApp video call to his wife. 'Saleem just wanted to show off before his wife…wore Sonare's uniform, which was in the room,' a police officer reportedly said. The matter might have remained hidden had Saleem not been implicated in another burglary in Indiranagar in May 2025, where he allegedly broke into a house and stole valuables. While investigating the case, Indiranagar police checked Saleem's mobile phone and found photographs and screenshots of him wearing a police uniform. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) B Devaraj confirmed that the photos were from a WhatsApp video call to a woman later identified as Saleem's wife. 'We questioned him later and found that Saleem was previously arrested by the Govindapura police last year in a similar theft case. To recover the valuables, the police had taken him outside Bengaluru and stayed in a hotel. Saleem used Sonare's uniform and called his wife. It amounts to negligence, and Sonare has been suspended,' Devaraj said. The photographs displayed Sonar's name badge, leaving little doubt as to whose uniform Saleem had been wearing. Following a report submitted by Indiranagar inspector Sudarshan, the police chief ordered Sonar's suspension for dereliction of duty. Authorities are now investigating whether Saleem's relationship with Sonar or other officers provided him with opportunities to commit further crimes or evade capture. 'As Saleem was a habitual offender, we have his photo, fingerprints, and other details,' a senior officer said, adding that the police are examining the broader circumstances of his interactions with law enforcement.

Following a report by Indiranagar inspector Sudarshan, the police chief ordered Sonar's suspension for negligence. Police are now investigating whether Saleem's connection with Sonar or other officers helped him commit more crimes or avoid being caught.
