Pedro Pascal makes his big return to ‘The Last of Us' after shocking death

New York Post12-05-2025

It wasn't the last of Joel.
Pedro Pascal returns to 'The Last of Us' in the promo for the sixth episode, airing this Sunday.
This comes after the second episode of Season 2 brutally murdered his character, Joel.

It's in line with what series co-creator Craig Mazin told The Post, as he said that even though Joel died, Joel and Ellie 'spend quite a bit of time together in this season…more than people might think.'
He's not coming back as a zombie or a ghost – the episode will show flashbacks of his time with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in between Seasons 1 and 2.

Based on a popular video game of the same name, 'The Last of Us' is set in a dystopian future where society has broken down, there are zombie-like creatures, and gruff smuggler Joel has formed a pseudo father/daughter relationship with teen girl Ellie.
In the second episode of Season 2, Joel was killed by the new Season 2 character, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).
He had previously killed Abby's father during his efforts to protect Ellie. So, Abby killed Joel as revenge.

After Joel saved her life, she viciously beat him nearly to death with a golf club and then stabbed him in the neck while Ellie watched, crying.
Ironically, since Abby slayed Joel as revenge for him killing her dad, her bloody action pushed Ellie into a similar revenge journey. Ellie has been searching for Abby, intending to kill her to avenge Joel.

There was a five-year time jump from Season 1 to Season 2, as Ellie was 14 in Season 1 and is now 19.
The preview of the sixth episode shows the time in between, when Joel and Ellie were still a family.
A scene in the trailer shows the duo walking in the woods holding guns, as he tells her, 'Remember what I taught you.'

Mazin exclusively told The Post that Joel's death was similar to when Ned Stark (Sean Bean) got killed on 'Game of Thrones.'
'If you look at 'Game of Thrones,' like everybody, I was so shocked when Ned Stark got his head chopped off. I couldn't believe it,' he said.
'That incident never goes away,' he added.

Joel's death was similar to Ned's because Ned's 'character is there, over everything from that first season [of 'Game of Thrones'], all the way to the final moments of the last one – because that informs everything. It changes everyone, and people keep coming back to that story over and over.'
'The Last of Us' airs Sundays (9 p.m.) on HBO and Max.

Billy Joel: 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated'

Billy Joel quipped that "getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated" amid his battle with a brain disorder. The Piano Man was forced to cancel all of his tour dates for the rest of the year after he was diagnosed with a rare condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), which is caused by a build-up of fluid in the brain, but he remains in good spirits amid his recovery. The co-director of his film Billy Joel: And So It Goes said at the Tribeca Film Festival screening on Wednesday (04.06.25), on his behalf: 'We know Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey that to you all. In fact, he said, 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated.'" Joel recently axed all of his tour dates - including 17 dates in North America and England - but reports suggest he has no plans to retire despite the diagnosis. Announcing the news on social media, a statement from Joel's team read: "Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance. "Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritising his health. "He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage." Billy added his own message to fans, saying: "I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding." Meanwhile, in Billy Joel: And So It Goes, it's revealed that Joel attempted suicide twice in his early 20s. He reflected in the film: 'I had no place to live. I was sleeping in laundromats and I was depressed I think to the point of almost being psychotic. "So I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.' I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like why hang out, tomorrow is going to be just like today is and today sucks. So, I just thought I'd end it all."

Billy Joel Talks About His Two Suicides Attempts in New Documentary

For the first time, Billy Joel has publicly opened up about two suicide attempts amid intense emotional struggles. In his latest documentary, the iconic musician opens up about the personal challenges he faced following a complicated relationship. He also opened up about how these experiences shaped both his life and career. Warning: The following contains discussions of suicide and mental health struggles. In the recently premiered documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, the legendary singer-songwriter has delved into a troubled chapter of his early life, including two suicide attempts. The film, which debuted on June 4, 2025, at the Tribeca Festival in New York, gives an emotional insight into Joel's struggles. During his early 20s, Joel was a member of the band Attila and lived with his bandmate Jon Small, Small's wife Elizabeth Weber, and their child. Over time, Joel developed feelings for Elizabeth and eventually confessed to Small, 'I'm in love with your wife.' This confession shattered both the band and the friendship between Joel and Small. (via PEOPLE) After the breakup, Joel's life spiraled out of control. Homeless and overwhelmed by depression, he found himself sleeping in laundromats and battling suicidal thoughts. He recalls, 'So I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.' I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like why hang out, tomorrow is going to be just like today is and today sucks. So, I just thought I'd end it all.' His sister Judy Molinari tried to help by giving him sleeping pills, but Joel took too many and fell into a coma that lasted several days. Despite surviving the first attempt, Joel's struggles continued. On a second occasion, he ingested a bottle of lemon Pledge, but Small intervened and took him to the hospital. Joel reflected on this, saying, 'Even though our friendship was blowing up, Jon saved my life.' Following these attempts, Joel checked himself into a mental health facility for observation, a decision that became a turning point in his recovery. He said, 'I got out of the observation ward, and I thought to myself, you can utilize all those emotions to channel that stuff into music.' The documentary is set to air on HBO in July. She talked about filming the upcoming third season on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday. "Cassie is crazy," she said. "Oh, she's even worse. She's even worse." Fallon then showed an image of the star in an apparent wedding dress, but Sweeney said she could not provide additional details about whether or not her character will tie the knot. Zendaya, Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike starred in Season 2. The actress, 27, also stars in the upcoming Apple TV+ thriller Echo Valley opposite Julianne Moore. "You know, when I first read the script, I was completely blown away by how Brad [Ingelsby], the writer, just wove in all of these crazy turns that I didn't even expect, and usually, I'm pretty good at figuring it out, and I did not see this coming," Sweeney told Fallon. "Claire, my character, shows up at her mom's doorstep, played by Julianne Moore, covered in blood," she added, describing the film. "And what follows is a endless amount of twists and turns that kind of show how much and how far a mother would go for her daughter." Domhnall Gleeson and Kyle MacLachlan also star in the film, which arrives on the streamer June 13. On Wednesday, Sweeney attended the New York premiere of Echo Valley.
