Barca's iconic ground has been undergoing a renovation since 2023, which is when the men's first team had to take its home games to Montjuic.
Using the old Olympic stadium for two seasons, Barca announced around three weeks ago that it would be going home on August 10 to host its annual Joan Gamper Trophy match which marks the start of a new campaign after a preseason tour that is often held in the United States or Asia.
'This return represents a historic milestone for the Club and for Barça fans, since after more than two years of extensive renovation and temporarily playing away from home at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, they will once again experience the excitement of football in the Barça temple, in the heart of Les Corts. However, it should be noted that the return will take place while the works on the new Spotify Camp Nou continue, and it will be necessary to coexist with performances in different areas of the venue,' the Catalans warned.
Since then, however, there have been frequent reports that Barca might not be able to pull off the return because of not having the right licenses and permits from the Barcelona city council.
On Wednesday, SPORT reports that Barca is 'close to suspending the celebration of the Joan Gamper trophy at the Spotify Camp Nou scheduled for August 10', as despite the construction works continuing to advance a lot in recent week, the 'reality' is that the club looks unlikely to receiving its first occupancy license which means it is now setting itself the challenge of getting Camp Nou ready for Hansi Flick's men's first La Liga home match on September 14 against Valencia.
A final decision on the matter will be made on Friday, and 'everything indicates that the Gamper will not be played at the Camp Nou'.
The Estadi Johany Cruyff has been touted as an alternative venue, and holds ten times less than what Camp Nou was tipped to for the Gamper.
This is because Barca first considered opening its stadium for 60,000 spectators and then tried for 30,000-32,000 instead.
As SPORT reports, though, 'everything indicates that it will not be possible' to host either capacity.
Not returning to Camp Nou in August will be very embarrassing for FC Barcelona
Not returning to Camp Nou in August will be very embarrassing for FC Barcelona on August 10, especially after making a grand announcement that this would be the case. If it doesn't come off, it beggars belief as to why President Joan Laporta decided to go out on a limb without the proper licenses and permissions in place.

🎥 Barcelona reach major milestone with new turf laid at Camp Nou

Barcelona have reached a major milestone in their return to Camp Nou with the pitch being laid on Tuesday. A clip on social media shows the grass being put down at the revamped stadium although as to when the team will start playing at the iconic ground is still unknown. Club officials and local authorities continue to manage the delayed timeline carefully. While Barcelona had initially aimed to resume matches at Camp Nou by August—specifically for the Joan Gamper Trophy on 10 August—that date has been officially ruled out due to pending construction permits, prompting the club to relocate the prestige match to their Johan Cruyff Stadium. In recent days, a technical and operational trial was conducted at the stadium. On 28 July, the club carried out extensive tests focusing on systems critical to match-day logistics—lighting, evacuation routes, fire detection, signage and accessibility in the South stand and VIP areas. Barcelona are targeting a partial reopening on 14 September, capped at around 60% capacity, equating to approximately 62,000 seats, for a La Liga match against Valencia. Despite these preparations, observers note continued delays across the broader redevelopment. While the pitch is ready and key operational elements are being tested, the third tier of seating and the stadium's roof remain under construction and are now postponed until summer 2026, with full completion expected in mid‑2026. Once fully complete, the upgraded stadium will hold around 105,000 spectators, making it the largest in Europe. The renovation includes improved VIP facilities, museum space, and modern accessibility features—all part of the ambitious €1.5 billion Espai Barça project aimed at boosting matchday revenue and club sustainability. 📸 JOSEP LAGO - AFP or licensors

Mercato: Iñaki Williams slams Barça while defending his brother Nico

Iñaki Williams and Nico Iñaki Williams, the older brother of Nico Williams, opened up to the press in recent hours. The Ghana international didn't hold back when it came to FC Barcelona. Initially rumored to be on the verge of joining FC Barcelona at the start of the summer transfer window, Nico Williams ultimately extended his contract with Bilbao until 2035. This news brought a smile to his brother Iñaki's face. The Ghanaian was asked about the situation during a press conference. "On a family level, it's been a bit complicated because there's been a lot of talk about my brother, and much of what has been said about Nico is false. He simply kept silent. Everyone has the right to think about their future. This summer, people have often been unfair to my brother (…) My brother's decision was not easy. His maturity is incredible. He had a wide range of options and he chose Athletic Bilbao. The club is making considerable progress. We have one of the best squads since I was twelve and joined the first team. He had a choice because he received many offers and a lot of clubs made bids for him. He's a top-level player (…) Many clubs made offers for him because he's a high-caliber player and his release clause could have been easily triggered. He was a gift from the heavens for the big clubs. It wasn't easy, because all the external noise could have made him hesitate, but he made the best decision. My brother was quite clear about his decision, but a long-term contract had to be established. Some events happened that caused a lot of harm, like the vandalism of the mural, the breaking of a car window… He made his decision with heart and ambition. He decided to stay with us and leave his legacy here, just like Julen Guerrero did in his time, and to be a role model for his desire to make his mark here.", he explained. The Black Star continued, not sparing Barça, though he never mentioned them by name: "We all know how the football world works and the pressure they wanted to put on all Athletic supporters, on my brother… A media campaign that they probably thought would benefit them. At Athletic, when we want a player, we do it quietly. All this outside noise did a lot of damage and muddied the waters. Because a lot of what was said and leaked to the media or on social networks was false. My brother had made his decision, but a very long contract tying him until 2035 had to be finalized. It couldn't be made public overnight. Some incidents tarnished Athletic's objectives, like the two times the mural was vandalized, or when they went to my brother's place and smashed a car window… Things that are often unknown but weigh on the player and his decisions. It's very easy not to say or do anything when you're sitting on your couch, but when you're suffering personally, it's different. Seeing my brother suffer as Athletic's captain is not easy. Many teams wanted him when he was just 22. He stayed discreet, and I had to stop him several times because I saw things he didn't like. We had lots of calls and video conferences during that period. People at Athletic must understand that it's not easy to make a life-changing decision in such a short time. The decision was his alone. When he steps onto the pitch at San Mamés, he will receive immense affection."

Barcelona release statement following Marc-Andre ter Stegen surgery

Barcelona have confirmed that captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen has undergone surgery for a recurring back problem. There is plenty of intrigue surrounding his diagnosis, given the length of his injury could have a major impact on Barcelona's ability to register new players in the coming month. The German goalkeeper announced the decision last week, explaining that he would be out for three months, one month short of the required four-month period for Barcelona to activate La Liga's injury rule. That would allow them to use 80% of the amount of ter Stegen's salary limit cost towards other players on a temporary basis, with new additions Roony Bardghji, Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia currently unregistered. Marc-Andre ter Stegen of FC Barcelona warms up during the Spanish league, La Liga EA Sports, football match played between Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona at La Ceramica stadium on September 22, 2024, in Valencia, Spain. AFP7 22/09/2024 ONLY FOR USE IN SPAIN No timeline given on recovery for ter Stegen It means their ability to do so may hinge on the medical report written up by surgeon Amelie Leglise, who operated on ter Stegen on Tuesday. That much was confirmed by Barcelona, but they did not give a recovery period. Barcelona to submit medical report to La Liga It had been suggested last week by another doctor that ter Stegen's announcement will have little impact on La Liga's ruling. The Blaugrana now have 30 days to submit a report to La Liga, as per MD. Four members of the medical commission for La Liga will then give the green light to the league on the report they receive, provided they perceive no issues. Barcelona were reportedly very unhappy with ter Stegen's announcement, seeing it as deliberate sabotage of their plans, and questions have been raised over his captaincy for next season.
