Kettering Health cyberattack latest: Internal health records back, MyChart work continues

Yahoo2 days ago

Jun. 2—After two full weeks of Kettering Health dealing with a system-wide technology outage caused by a cyberattack, the group's clinical staff are now back to using the core components of its internal electronic health record software, the hospital organization said in its latest update.
"This marks a major milestone in our broader restoration efforts and a vital step toward returning to normal operations," Kettering Health's update said.
More than 200 people from the Kettering Health Information Systems team, clinical team members and partners from the software company Epic worked to reach this point, Kettering Health said.
Kettering Health's clinical staff can now update and access electronic health records, facilitate communication across care teams and coordinate patient care with greater speed and clarity, according to the hospital organization.
Progress continues in bringing Kettering Health's phone lines back online at its facilities and practices. Work is also continuing on bringing back access to MyChart for patients. MyChart is an online patient portal system created by Epic.
Administrators believe the cyberattack, which happened on May 20, was ransomware, though they did not have direct contact with the perpetrators, whom the hospital believes to be operating outside of the U.S.
This type of cyberattack generally takes between 10 and 20 days to fix, according to industry experts.
A "small subset" of Kettering Health's data was accessed during this cyberattack by unauthorized users, said Kettering Health CEO Michael Gentry.
"Once our analysis is complete, we will notify individuals that were impacted," Gentry said.
When Kettering Health detected unauthorized access within its technology infrastructure, the hospital system took action to contain that activity.
"In the following days, our teams and physicians have demonstrated resilience, creativity and a steadfast focus on patient safety," Gentry said.
Since May 20, patients have dealt with canceled appointments, delayed medical treatments and an inability to call their care teams or access MyChart. Certain patients needing emergency medical care were diverted from Kettering Health's emergency rooms during most of this outage, but that diversion ended last week. Others were able to continue services like physical therapy, but without the therapist being able to see all the notes from past visits.
The hospital system has been getting certain departments and services back to being operational during its ongoing recovery. Its wider network of primary care doctors and specialists have been seeing patients on a walk-in basis.
For Kettering Health patients with urgent health questions, call 937-600-6879 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday.
After hours, Kettering Health Medical Group patients can call MatchMD at 1-866-257-5363.
For medical emergencies, patients are urged to go to the nearest emergency department.
Kettering Health has 14 area medical centers and more than 120 outpatient locations throughout Western Ohio, as well as Kettering Physician Network, which includes more than 700 board-certified providers.

Fortnite on the Switch 2 will support GameChat and mouse controls

Fortnite is coming to the Switch 2 with some massive visual improvements and new features that are going to make it feel like a new game for the Nintendo crowd. While we knew that Fortnite would be playable on the Switch 2 at launch, today Epic announced all of the new features that are being incorporated into the game via an update. After years of maxing out at 30 fps on the original Switch, Fortnite will now run at 60fps on the Switch 2. The game is also getting a resolution bump to 2176x1224 when docked and 1600x900 when undocked (up from 1560x880 docked / 1170x660 undocked). Draw distance, textures, shadows, and water rendering are also getting an overall quality boost that will make the game more crisp. And on the newer side of things, Fortnite is also launching support for the Switch 2's GameChat feature as well as support for the console's Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. While Epic has already pushed the Fortnite update for folks who have gotten their hands on the Switch, support for mouse controls — which work in Battle Royale, Zero Build, Team Rumble, Reload, and Fortnite OG — isn't set to launch until June 7th. June 7th also just so happens to be the day when Fortnite 's ongoing Star Wars -themed season comes to an end with the Death Star Sabotage live event, which is probably going to look at lot better on the Switch 2 compared to its predecessor. All of this might not seem too special to people who have been playing Fortnite on other consoles, but it truly cannot be stressed enough how not great the game has looked on the Switch in the past. Mouse controls aside, these updates might not change gameplay all that much, but they're going to make squadding a much, much more enjoyable experience.

A lot more AI characters are coming to Fortnite

AI Darth Vader was a huge hit in Fortnite, and now Epic plans to let creators make AI-powered NPCs for their own in-game experiences. But a senior Epic exec says that creators should expect a 'learning curve' when using them — something Epic had to figure out on its own. The AI Vader that Epic made lets users talk to the character using their voice and hear an AI-generated version of James Earl Jones's Vader voice talk back. It was the 'culmination of a very intense effort for a character everybody understands,' Saxs Persson, Epic's EVP of the Fortnite ecosystem, tells The Verge. But Epic couldn't just set an AI chatbot loose — 'a lot' went into defining how Vader reacted and dialing in the voice. The work was worth it, though; in-game, Vader's voice sounds just like the movies, and when he's on your team, he's a menacing, aggressive force. Persson says that Vader was ultimately 'integrated into gameplay in a way that every player could understand' and he hopes creators are able to make similar things. Vader's rollout wasn't perfect; a popular streamer, Loserfruit, was able to get Vader to swear, which Epic fixed shortly after it happened. Persson says that it was a 'learning experience' and that the team has built multiple layers of how it does its safety checks. Epic also tries to build systems to prevent those kinds of things and be able to react fast. 'We do our best job on day one,' Persson says. 'But more importantly, we're ready to surround the problem and actually have fixes in place as fast as we can.' Creators making AI NPCs for Fortnite will have access to the same safety tools that Epic did for Vader. At Unreal Fest on June 3rd, the company showed a live demo of an AI NPC called Mr. Buttons, whose only purpose was, using its voice, to try and convince the player to push a giant red button. It was a simple, effective, and funny demo that showed what's possible. The goal was to create a scenario where 'the responses are literally endless' so that 'everybody has a different experience,' Persson says. Persson wouldn't say if or when Epic plans to bring more AI NPCs to Fortnite. He says that Epic didn't give its designer some kind of 'AI objective' when making Vader. 'Our objective is fun,' CEO Tim Sweeney says. 'AI is just another tool they have now,' Persson adds. It sounds like AI characters could show up in Epic and Disney's 'persistent universe' that's in the works, too: 'I would imagine that AI plays a role,' Persson says, noting that it would help with immersion. Persson wouldn't share a timeline for when the universe, which was announced last year, might be available. But Epic is going to let creators make their own Star Wars- themed experiences, so perhaps somebody will create another take on an AI Darth Vader.

The Witcher 4 Video Shows New Look at Ciri

During Epic's State of Unreal event, CD Projekt Red showed off some stunning footage of The Witcher 4, promising the most ambitious entry in the iconic series to date. CD Projekt Red came prepared with two videos for fans. The first was a brief cinematic showcasing a group of people being ambushed by a flying creature while in a wagon. Afterward, Ciri can be seen investigating the wreckage before things transition into another video. Following the cinematic of Ciri investigating the wagon's wreckage, things then cut to a 'technological showcase.' CD Projekt Red claims the video is running on a standard PlayStation 5 and outputting in 60 FPS with ray-tracing enabled. While some fans considered it a gameplay video, CDPR told VGC that the video was a separate tech demo set in the world of The Witcher 4 and not the game itself. In the video, Ciri rides into town on her horse, Kelpie, and we're treated to some stunning visuals and physics. After arriving in town, Ciri moves through a crowded market before CDPR's Sebastian Kalemba talks a bit about the game. He noted that the upcoming project is the 'most ambitious' and immersive open-world Witcher game ever. Currently, not a ton about The Witcher 4 is known. The game was revealed last year at The Game Awards, and CDPR has kept mostly quiet on things outside of their presentation today. Originally reported by Anthony Nash on Coming Soon.
