Witkoff to meet Qatari officials at World Cup final, expresses optimism on Gaza talks
Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump's envoy to the Middle East, expressed optimism on Sunday regarding ongoing negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza. Speaking to reporters in Teterboro, New Jersey, Witkoff said he plans to meet with senior Qatari officials on the sidelines of the FIFA Club World Cup final, scheduled to take place later Sunday. His remarks were reported by Reuters. "I'm optimistic about where the discussions are heading," Witkoff said, without elaborating on details of the mediation efforts. The envoy's involvement comes as part of intensified US efforts to bring an end to the conflict amid rising international pressure. Earlier Sunday, the Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad reiterated that any ceasefire agreement must result in a full 'Israeli' withdrawal from Gaza, the reopening of border crossings, and the launch of reconstruction efforts in the war-torn enclave. In a joint statement, Hamas said a delegation led by Mohammad Darwish, head of the group's leadership council, met with Islamic Jihad Secretary-General Ziyad al-Nakhalah. The two sides discussed the latest Israeli responses to ceasefire proposals put forward by international mediators, and how best to respond to them. Both groups have insisted that an agreement must go beyond a temporary truce and address the broader political and humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

Abu Obaida marks one year since martyrdom of commander Mohammed al-Deif
Abu Obaida, the military spokesman for the Qassam Brigades, commemorated the first anniversary of the passing of the great martyr and leader Mohammed al-Deif. He highlighted al-Deif's pivotal role in leading the Aqsa flood operation, which inflicted the harshest blow in the history of 'the Zionist enemy', permanently shattering 'Israeli' deterrence. Abu Obaida said that al-Deif's leadership united the energies of the Arab and Islamic nation, redirecting their focus towards Palestine and restoring the Palestinian cause to the forefront once again. He described decades of jihad, pursuit, sacrifice, leadership, and creativity culminating in al-Deif's martyrdom, joining the ranks of the great martyrs of the Palestinian people and its leaders. Abu Obaida emphasized how the blood of al-Deif and his fellow commanders mingled with the blood of Palestinians and the wider Ummah, who sacrificed everything for Al-Aqsa and Palestine. The spokesman also praised al-Deif for reviving the legacy of early Islamic companions and warriors such as Ali, Khalid, Al-Qa'qa', and Al-Muthanna. He said al-Deif remained an inspiration for generations who never saw his image but took pride in the victories of his brigades, and that he will continue to be a beacon for freedom fighters worldwide.

Abbas says Hamas won't govern Gaza once ceasefire begins
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday that Hamas will not be allowed to govern the Gaza Strip in the post-war period, stressing that the group must disarm and commit to the political program of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). 'Hamas must hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority and engage in political work under a unified legal system, one authority, one law, and one legitimate weapon,' Abbas said during a meeting with former British Prime Minister and ex-Quartet envoy Tony Blair in Amman, Jordan. The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, with Abbas reiterating the need for an immediate halt to hostilities, the release of all captives and detainees, and the unhindered entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave. President Abbas emphasized that the only viable solution is a full 'Israeli' withdrawal from Gaza and the empowerment of the Palestinian state to assume full responsibilities in the territory with strong Arab and international support. He also called for an end to all unilateral 'Israeli' actions, including settlement expansion, annexation attempts, and repeated assaults on Islamic and Christian holy sites. Abbas renewed his call for a serious political process based on international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative, advocating for the convening of an international peace conference in New York to implement the two-state solution. At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue coordination and engagement with relevant parties to end the war and promote regional peace and stability.
