Fisheries professionals from Morocco and Mauritania on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to the sustainable and collaborative management of shared small pelagic fish stocks, during a two-day meeting in Dakhla aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The Moroccan Confederation of Industrial Pelagic Fishing Shipowners (COMAIP) and Mauritania's National Fishing Federation (FNP) stressed the strategic role of these fisheries in food security, regional development, and marine ecosystem balance. The event builds on a Declaration of Intent signed in Agadir last February and supports the broader Fisheries Cooperation Agreement between the two countries.
Participants called for ecosystem-based management guided by scientific data and aligned with international standards, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.
A joint committee was announced to coordinate scientific and technical exchange, propose harmonized policies, and enhance control and traceability systems.
FNP President Yahefdhou Elbechir and COMAIP President Mohamed Lamine Hormatallah both emphasized the need for coordinated action to preserve marine resources for future generations. Experts at the meeting described the initiative as a model for regional cooperation in sustainable fisheries governance.

Morocco's Govt. Head inaugurates Kingdom's pavilion at Paris International Agricultural Show

On Saturday, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch inaugurated the Moroccan pavilion at the Paris International Agricultural Show, where Morocco is the first foreign guest of honor. Akhannouch was accompanied by French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, Morocco's Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests Ahmed El Bouari, as well as Ambassador of His Majesty the King in Paris Samira Sitail. Together, they cut the ribbon to officially open the Moroccan pavilion. Le chef du gouvernement marocain et le MAE français ont pris le temps de discuter avec de nombreux exposants marocains et de goûter aux nombreux produits du terroir? — (@yabiladi_fr) February 22, 2025 Following the inauguration, Akhannouch toured the pavilion and engaged in discussions with Moroccan exhibitors, in the presence of several members of the Moroccan community. French political figures, including Vice-President of the French National Assembly Naïma Moutchou, President of the France-Morocco Friendship Group in the French Senate Christian Cambon, and Senator Hervé Marseille, also participated in the visit. For Akhannouch, Morocco's presence at the Paris International Agricultural Show as guest of honor for the first time in the event's history reflects the «deep friendship» between Morocco and France, as well as the importance of agriculture and the solidarity of Moroccan farmers. He emphasized that Morocco's participation highlighted local products and the involvement of all territories, specifically noting the contribution of women's cooperatives showcasing their products. «This demonstrates the variety and richness of the agricultural products we have in our country», Akhannouch said. Amidst the exceptional relations between the two countries, Morocco's recognition at the 2025 SIA (February 22-March 2) underscores the uniqueness of the France-Morocco partnership. It is also a fitting tribute to Morocco, which has become a regional and continental leader in sustainable agriculture. The Kingdom will occupy a 476 m² pavilion, showcasing the diversity and richness of its agriculture at the heart of the Show. Organized under the motto 'A French Pride,' the 61st SIA is expected to attract over 600,000 visitors, with 4,000 animals and 1,000 exhibitors spread across a 16-hectare site with 9 pavilions. Morocco's tribute at the SIA is also a precursor to an upcoming event: next April, France will be the guest of honor at the International Agriculture Exhibition in Morocco (SIAM) in Meknes. This exchange serves as a powerful symbol of the complementary relationship between the two nations, extending beyond trade to tackle significant challenges in the sector, such as food security, water resource management, and agricultural innovation.

Who is Ahmed El Bouari, the Technocrat Taking Over the Agriculture Portfolio?

Doha - In a government reshuffle on Wednesday, King Mohammed VI appointed Ahmed El Bouari as the new Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests. El Bouari replaces Mohamed Sadiki of the National Rally of Independents (RNI) party, who was considered a close ally of Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch. The appointment comes as part of a broader cabinet shakeup that saw the integration of six new secretaries of state, two from each party in the governing coalition - a move seen as bolstering the representation of the RNI, PAM and Istiqlal parties. Key ministries like Interior, Foreign Affairs, Justice and Islamic Affairs remained unchanged. So who is the new Agriculture Minister tasked with overseeing this critical sector of Morocco's economy? A technocrat with over two decades of experience, El Bouari has served since June 2023 as the Director of Irrigation and Agricultural Development at the very ministry he will now lead. Prior to that, he was appointed in September 2018 as the Director of Irrigation and Agricultural Land Planning. In these roles, he oversaw major projects like the inter-basin water transfer from the Sebou River to the Bouregreg River basin. The Ouezzane native also headed the Development Division at the Directorate of Irrigation and Agricultural Land Planning from 2009-2013. He began his career as an engineer in a World Bank-financed project coordination unit. El Bouari, 60, is also a prominent figure in the RNI party, having recently been re-elected as President of the party's association of engineers. He holds leadership roles in national and international professional associations in the irrigation and agricultural development fields. As minister, El Bouari will be expected to continue the modernization and expansion of Morocco's agriculture sector, which accounts for over 12% of GDP. Key challenges include increasing productivity and resilience in the face of climate change, supporting rural development, ensuring food security, and tackling the severe drought that has afflicted the country in recent years, leading to water scarcity and reduced agricultural yields. The agriculture portfolio is one of the most strategically important in the Moroccan government. El Bouari's appointment suggests a desire for continuity and technocratic expertise as the country seeks to further develop this pillar of the economy.
