This intense tale of a destructive love affair is a masterpiece

According to the novelist Angela Carter, the feminist press Virago — of which she was a leading light — was fuelled in part by 'the desire that no daughter of mine should ever be in the position to write By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, exquisite prose though it might contain. 'By Grand Central Station I Tore Off His Balls' would be more like it.'
The man whose balls needed to be torn off was the poet George Barker, a heavy-drinking roué who fathered 15 children by four women. This tomcattery, however, did not diminish Elizabeth Smart's love for him. It seemed that nothing could, for hers was a frenzied love, sparked in the late Thirties when she chanced upon Barker's poetry in a bookshop on Charing Cross Road and declared herself smitten. Until her death in 1986 she kept every memento of their relationship stored under her bed, as their four children would eventually discover.
The intense, destructive romance between Smart, a budding writer from an affluent Canadian family, and Barker, a fêted but impecunious poet from Essex, inspired her best-known work. By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, a slim volume of poetic prose, garnered little attention when it was published in 1945, but gained a cult following after it was reissued in 1966, its lyricism later influencing musicians such as Morrissey.
After Smart's fateful encounter with Barker's poetry she struck up a correspondence with him. Although Barker was married and teaching in Japan, she paid to fly him and his wife to visit her in California where she had joined a writers' colony. The book's opening is based on this episode and what follows is a chaotic, rhapsodic account of the early years of their affair, which would play out across continents and last for decades.
I use 'account' loosely for the story is fictionalised and deliberately threadbare — the mere outline of a love triangle between nameless characters — and the prose is a maelstrom of metaphors. As the narrator plucks lines from TS Eliot and draws on classical mythology, pining like Dido for Aeneas, we are left to piece together the events that have occurred. Along the way we deduce liaisons, pregnancy, exasperated parents (hers), broken promises (his), bitterness and rows.
At one stage the lovers are arrested for — we presume — being an unmarried couple intent on having sex and crossing a US state border. This is where the biblical language comes into its own (the book's title, of course, is taken from Psalm 137, but with the rivers of Babylon replaced by Grand Central Station, where the final chapter is set). During the interrogation the policeman's questions are spliced with verses from the Song of Solomon: 'What relation is this man to you? (My beloved is mine and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies) … Were you intending to commit fornication in Arizona? (He shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.)'

The hard truth is that it is difficult to sympathise with the narrator or her beloved. Smart's moral compass is often as out of kilter as Barker's. In the clutches of her infatuation she makes questionable choices (understatement!) and is so beholden to her volatile, self-centred lover that 'neither the shabby streets nor the cooped-up hotel ever became for me, as they were always for him, symbols of wretchedness and no cash'.
So a light read this is not. Every page is driven by torment. As the author and critic Brigid Brophy put it, 'The entire book is a wound.' Yet Smart's ability to capture the pain and ecstasy of love is nothing short of extraordinary. Her narrator, knowing the spectacular hurt that lies ahead, declares that she is 'mortally pierced with the seeds of love' and the cooing mourning-doves 'are the hangmen pronouncing my sentence'.
After the Second World War, Smart worked as an advertising copywriter to support her family. She joined Queen magazine in the early Sixties, co-wrote cookery books and eventually settled in a remote part of Suffolk to focus on her creative writing. There were several short collections of poetry and, most notably, The Assumption of the Rogues & Rascals (1978) in which she returned to her and Barker's tale, again by way of a nameless female narrator and her faithless lover.

I suspect that Carter was more approving of that later book title yet it was By Grand Central Station that she hailed as 'a masterpiece'. If you can brace yourself for a heavy dose of abstraction there are lines of searing beauty that will long stay with you.

Say you are a single woman in New York and you are, in the words of the song, torn between two lovers: two handsome, intelligent, nice guys – one very poor and one very rich. All things being equal, who do you go for? The answer in real life is very different, in fact diametrically opposed, to the answer in a film. Few movie heroines have the candour of Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, who admitted to falling in love with Mr Darcy on seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley. But this is the choice, which never quite ascends to the state of a dilemma, in this charming and watchable – yet for me somehow anticlimactic – romantic comedy-drama from South Korean-Canadian film-maker Celine Song: a love-triangle confection to follow the much realer, truer love triangle of Song's much acclaimed debut Past Lives. When the decision is made, the final act has an almost morosely elegiac mood, as it must, as various speeches and set pieces reconcile its rather trudgingly earnest direction of travel with the witty, savvy materialism of the movie's premise. The scene is, of course, Manhattan where Lucy, played by Dakota Johnson, is a matchmaker, arranging dates and introductions for professionals who want to get married or, in fact, to settle. The movie begins varnished with a commercial glaze of luxury, that aspirational state of material wealth that marriage underpins and which no one apologises for wanting. Lucy is about to pull off her professional and personal masterpiece; she is unofficial guest of honour at the chi-chi wedding she has masterminded for a tremulous female client who has bagged a rich financial guy. The groom's unmarried straight brother is hedge-fund manager Harry, played by Pedro Pascal: tall, well built, sophisticated, rocking a non-rental tux, clearly very rich and very interested in Lucy personally. He's basically a nice, non-psycho version of American Psycho's Patrick Bateman. In fact, for much of the early stages of the film, the dialogue does have something of Bret Easton Ellis: observations about wealth exchanged on a level of murmuringly subdued rational calm. No one is trying to be funny. This is just the way it is. But just as Harry is putting the moves on Lucy at the reception, her ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans) serves her a drink. Humiliatingly, he is a failing actor reduced to side-hustling as a waiter for a catering company, still sharing a chaotic apartment with three other appalling losers in their 30s. And so Lucy's relationship with the glamorous and stylish Harry proceeds in parallel with this bittersweet and inconvenient reconnection with the broke, lovable (and hot) John – flashbacks reveal that Lucy, now a supercool professional, was once much more vulnerable and emotional with John. The film does not play one suitor off against the other; there is no Mark Darcy/Daniel Cleaver-style punch-up. They are mutually respectful and both supposed to be worthy of Lucy, though Harry does have a certain secret that will have audiences doing some Googling after the film, a secret so startling on its own terms that its vulgar metaphoric potential didn't occur to me until much later. Song was herself, she has revealed, once employed as a matchmaker. Unlike Lucy – who tells her clients she can't just magically produce ideal mates or, like Dr Frankenstein, build them – Song can effectively do exactly this in her imaginary world, and place Lucy with an ideal man. The idealism replaces the materialism; the romanticism that comes with it is subdued. Materialists is in UK and Irish cinemas from 13 August

Cheltenham Literature Festival 2025 line-up announced

Dame Joanna Lumley and Tulisa Contostavlos are among the celebrities to be announced in this year's line-up at the Cheltenham Literature held in 1949 and thought to be the world's oldest literature festival, the event will feature talks and discussions from authors, journalists and public than 400 events are planned between 10-19 October, including talks from Graham Norton, Katie Piper, Sir Michael Palin, and BBC director general Tim Joanna, star of Absolutely Fabulous, will be interviewed about her forthcoming book, and Contostavlos, of The X Factor and N-Dubz fame, will talk about Judgement, her new book detailing the highs and lows of her career. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Women's Prize for Fiction winner, children's author Dame Jacqueline Wilson and Ian McEwan, author of Atonement, will also be part of the TV and film stars will gather in Cheltenham over the ten days, including Richard Curtis, creator of Love Actually, and Gavin and Stacey actors Joanna Page and Larry Lamb, with the latter also appearing with his son, George, to present his debut novel All Wrapped of the talks will look at social issues, with Rizzle Kicks star Jordan Stephens questioning if masculinity is in crisis alongside writers Laura Bates and James names announced include food writer Nigel Slater, former deputy prime minister Sir Nick Clegg, wildlife photographer Hamza Yassin, Olympic gold medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins, and French chef Raymond Blanc.
